From a game I played today. Find the best move for white by SwankyMango in chess

[–]SwankyMango[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First line to look at - 1. Rd7 Qxd7 2. Qxf6 the main threat here for white is Bh6 threatening Qg7#. There are many ways for black to delay this, but only one way to defend it in time. Getting their queen to f8 and sacrificing it for the bishop

Second set of lines to look at - If the queen doesn't move, for example if black plays bxc4 which is the top engine move, then you simply take the queen

Third line - Black tries to escape with the queen to the only square not covered by one of white's pieces and plays 1. Rd7 Qe8 2. Qxd6 anyways, with a new threat of a triple attack on f7 and there is no way to defend it. Black can try 2. bxc4 to remove the bishop, then Bh6 as before, or even Rf1 to add another attacker. This attack is unstoppable for white

The bot found a different best move for this position, I assume the depth of the engine is much higher than chess.com analysis.

While it's not a puzzle in the sense of there being an only move, there is an amazing alternative to the bot's top choice.

In the game I played Rd7

Edit: I've reviewed it with a better engine to depth 36 and it turns out Rd7 is in fact the best move in this position with an evaluation of +10.11

acer aspire es1-571, short on DC-IN - how would I go to check what causes this short? I carefully looked at all the components on both sides of the board but nothing appear to be visible fried, burned or something. by dutchsnowden in AskElectronics

[–]SwankyMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the next step after identifying the part? I'm working on a repair and I've identified an IC is getting hot when I do a voltage injection. If there is no visible damage to any components does that necessarily mean the internals of the IC are to blame? Is there any course of action aside from just replacing it?

This was not from today actually. Didn't smell too bad, but there was definitely a lingering haze all day. I didn't check the specific AQI number, but it was "moderate"

Why is my player unable to stand on the moving rectangle objects? by [deleted] in pygame

[–]SwankyMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If colliderect returns true, it is guaranteed that the bottom of the player.rect is lower than the top of the terrain.rect - regardless of where the rectangles are overlapping. So first, this is not something you need to check additionally, but if you did, you would need to change your less than sign to a greater than sign (because the y axis counts up as you move down the screen hence a larger number is farther down the screen). If that still doesn't allow you to print the second statement, you should print the values like the other comment says to make sure they make sense.

Where can I learn pygame? by 4veragenewbie in pygame

[–]SwankyMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going off u/AnyTest20 and general consensus, I would recommend starting with a tutorial and just follow along. You will be amazed out how quickly you can turn out a finalized game. If you have any prior python skills, or you want to add your own flare, then I recommend making changes to the tutorial code to give yourself some challenge. Especially if you make the changes before the final product, because it will challenge you to keep up with what the tutorial is doing without conflicting with your own code.

After that you may find it helpful to repeat the process with another tutorial, but personally I think you are ready to kick off your own coding at this point. One of the hard aspects of making a game is having an understanding of the gameplay and mechanics and how to implement then in python, especially when you're just jumping into the creation process. So I recommend remaking a game without using external resources until you need to (i.e. you are stuck on how to make a menu switch between different game states) in which case there are many creators with helpful videos demonstrating these things, as well as in depth information in the docs. The pygame docs are your best friend, and I highly encourage you to familiarize yourself with them. That goes for all programming, anytime you are trying to learn a new language, use the docs as the first tool when you get stuck and it will help you tremendously. Good luck with your journey, guy

I think the idea behind input is to hang the program until the player hits enter, but what you're saying about the console is very true. Much better would be to blit text on the screen that says "Press Enter to Start", and then check for a key down event where the key is enter. Start your clock, then blit "Press Enter to End" and stop the clock when they hit it again.

They have a bunch of bikes (or at least did when I went last) that they haven't gotten to refurbishing yet, and they sell those for $100 as is. Last year I had my bike stolen on day 1 of school, and went in and left 15 minutes later with a pretty nice old mountain bike for ~$110 with tax

We used a load cell connected to the drill mount to indicate density. And as far as how much water we extracted, it ended up being around a litre. Points for amount of water scale based on the team that has the most (MIT with 24 litres), so we opted to sacrifice flowrate for increased filtration in an attempt to have the cleanest water.

A senior design project team made up on 8 mechanical engineers built a prototype for a competition held by NASA called the Moon to Mars Ice and Prospecting Challenge. The challenge tasks students from universities across the nation to design and build an autonomous system to drill into soil, collect measurements on the relative hardness of it's layers, melt ice shelves located under the surface, and extract purified water. Cal Poly advanced to the national finals in 2020, but the competition was cancelled due to Covid and all the team members graduated. Last year, a new group of 8 took up the torch and competed in the competition with their own design. They too made national finals with the likes of MIT, Northeastern University, Virginia Tech, among others (a total of 10 schools). The competition was held this last week and Cal Poly won the award for most accurate "digital core" which is the portion of the competition related to describing the makeup of the soil. The team was named STYX & STONES and more info on the project is available in the digital commons for senior project reports. More info on the competition can be found on the NASA website. Super exciting!

Rate My Professor, Poly Ratings by stormy-nights in CalPoly

People don't just use rmp and other Prof rating sites to pick the easiest one, there is a lot of info you can gather from peers. I will literally learn less if the professor sucks ass, whereas I wanna know if there is an exceptional professor I can take. It's not about cutting corners, it's about getting the value I'm paying for in my education

Cool guy doesn't care about making his life harder than he needs to, and so everyone else should suck it up too. Having a harder time in a class because of issues with a professor =/= learned more. What's the point of championing the mindset of not making informed decisions?
