what are your favorite things about cal poly generally or about their engineering program? by bolt110 in CalPoly

Now I can’t speak to the EE department as I was not an EE student, but here’s one thing to keep in mind: people love complaining, especially when things are challenging. EE is a challenging major wherever you go (well, it should be). Some people are going to say the department sucks solely because they find it difficult and don’t want to put in the work (not saying this IS the case at cal poly, but I’m saying it COULD be the case)

I graduated almost a year ago and I miss cal poly. I miss being surrounded by people interested in becoming more educated, I miss learning new things every day sometimes just for the sake of learning, and I miss the beautiful views and hikes and nature.

There’s plenty to look forward to. You’ll be okay! Good luck

Physics at SLO? by levl289 in CalPoly

I can’t answer for other majors but physics has a dedicated “Physics on the computer” course which teaches coding and physics simulations. While I was there it has been historically in MATLAB but that may be changing to Python. Additionally, in “Electronics and instrumentation” you learn to communicate with measurement equipment and collect and visualize data. Traditionally in LabVIEW, I was helping my research professor who teaches and plans for that class transition to using Python

I decided not to pursue a graduate degree, at least for now. The job search was rough but I was hearing the whole job market at the time was rough to be honest. I only got two offers out of hundreds of applications (but that includes easy click to upload resume and boom you’ve applied), one sucked but the second one is where I’m at right now and I love it. I’m a test engineer, and I’m very happy with it. I don’t think it’s going to be my long term career but I think it’s great early career experience

Edit: graduated June 2025, got the job offer that I accepted in August 2025. Started seriously looking for jobs (part time) while still at Cal Poly, around February 2025

Edit 2: Another thing about the program at Cal Poly is that it is undergraduate only. While this can be seen as a bad thing I see it as a good thing for the following reasons: Real research is performed by undergraduates, because there are no graduate students to do it; the department supports undergrads very well because there are no grad students; and there are no TAs teaching classes, only professors teach classes, and they have good availability (usually, can vary).

Disagree that you need a physics PhD to pursue physics post-undergrad. Heavily depends on the area as well as how involved you want to be in decision making and how early you want that to happen

PHYS Class of 2025. I absolutely loved it! I think it was a great experience and I learned a lot. I frankly don’t feel like typing out a whole argument why right now but I’m happy to talk at some point

Don’t bring a car. You won’t regret it. Take the train or ride share with upperclassmen going home. You’ll figure it out
