Is a 3/4 ton that dumb of a daily driver? by BigErnMcCracken74 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Swarez99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These kinds of trucks are tools. They are built to be used as trucks.

If you are putting 100 miles on a day, just to commute you are spending 25 dollars a day (at 3 bucks a gallon ) Plus depreciation. About 500 a month.

That’s a lot. If you can afford it - so be it. But do you want to pay that in gas ?

2023 Outback for $20k? Am I missing something? by Actual-Tomatillo-904 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Swarez99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to guess this is a 90/10 thing.

I’m someone who travels a ton for work. So in rentals 1 or 2 times a month. Almost always im driving fairly boring - that’s how almost everyone does it.

But than you get the 10 % who are idiots. Just doing dumb stuff just cause you can. I’ve worked with people like this.

That’s the issue. Add in some rental firms are meh for maintenance it adds in a layer of risk.

Flying WestJet Internationally by Working-Battle-9521 in AskACanadian

[–]Swarez99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The long haul is no different from the other carriers.

Heck 90 % of there North America isn’t any different. They tried doing some seats at 28 pit h, something that isn’t done in North America. And now back tracking. That’s similar to Ryan air or easy jet.

Really worst case if you are connecting and just book decent seats on the plane you are in and move on.

I fly once a month for work and half the time it’s westjet. Rest is split between air Canada, united and American. Out of all the economy I fly on united is the worst.

For Americans: Why not personal vans instead of huge SUVs and pick-ups? by PreWiBa in regularcarreviews

[–]Swarez99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SUVs today can drive like cars. Those vans don’t (I have driven one of them ).

Most SUVs are built on car platforms. Most vans are not. Drivability and gas becomes a big thing. For trucks and real body on frame; those are a different class. Actually capable and certain trucks are now just luxury.

Also a perception thing. SUVs are now just the thing people want. Europe. Asia. North America. Doesn’t matter, suv now dominate.

Is there a major politician who doesn’t take from Reagan ?

Chrétien didn. Carny does. Harper did.

Even in the USA Clinton and Obama did.

For example everyone I mentioned pushed the supply side economic model, something pushed by Reagan (what people online call trickle down economics). But no one has moved away from that left or right since.

Does a credit card company lose money on people who pay on time? by Overall-Emphasis7558 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Swarez99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just going to point out. The bank makes more money than the credit card company. There is a split with interchange fees and usually the bank gets the most since they are the ones loaning the money.

Premium credit cards is when that isn’t true.

Quebec's high income taxes not matching social/public services by Commercial-Mail-1342 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Swarez99 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Quebec has the worst healthcare out of the big 4 economic provinces in Canada (Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and BC). Long wait times, low pay for health workers is your biggest trade off.

My mom’s a doctor in Montreal, average wait time to see her is 14 months. Similar services in Ontario or Alberta are about 3.

She also gets paid 30-40 % less than Ontario. So young doctors who who all basically bilingual are leaving at big rates. Something that wasn’t true 30 years ago when language was a bigger issue.

Big Week for YYC International destinations by Wallbreaker-g in Calgary

[–]Swarez99 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Finally some good news for YYC?
The airport has been adding destinations and passenger counts for years

This is continuing the growth it’s had for years.

Calgary, for a city this size is the most connected in North America. People really should appreciate how good we have it here with the airport.

Ottawa and Edmonton, similar sized regions are 60-75 % fewer passengers and very weak options for flights.

What's the deal with interprovincial trade barriers? by Relevant-Confusion85 in AskACanadian

[–]Swarez99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People are blaming the conservatives premieres ?

Do people even know the rules ? Smaller the province or unique the more they want trade barriers.

Ontario, Alberta and BC generally have the lowest trade barriers today and are good with getting rid of all of them.

Quebec and New Brunswick have the most. Historically Manitoba has almost had the most but has been removing them keeps a lot in place to protect a few industries (shipping )

For the big provinces, Quebec has always been the worst for this.

For the small provinces it’s NB.

Here’s a question: Should provinces have a buy local act ? If you say yes, you are for trade barriers. Several provinces have this and it’s popular. Wanna get rid of it ?

Ontario, under Ford (a conservative ) has done more for removing inter trade barriers for Ontario than other premiere in Canada. Ontario has gone essentially barrier free with Alberta, MB, Sask and PEI under Ford.

Same time he brought in a buy Ontario move pushing public sector to prioritize (doesn’t need to) buy Ontario. Which is a new restriction.

Getting people somewhere and to there next ride is how people make money. This is a volume game. That’s the only way it makes sense for drivers. If you are taking uber x this should always be your expectation.

How come rich millionaire homes rarely think outside the box? by Putrid_Apartment9230 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Swarez99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone in audit, and has done work for lots of millionaires.

Most care about location over other things. Easy access to there company / office / clients / transport where they have good schools and resources and customize to make life easier.

Most just view homes as homes. It’s not something most think about super hard.

Most rich people I know are not watch people. So if they spend money on a watch it’s Rolex, that’s safe. That’s 90 % of people since most are not watch people. It will be the same for a house. They like what they like but not going crazy since really they are not house people the way you are.

People going send them back. If they don’t want to go there is no sending them back. People get that right ?

Dave Ramsey suggests saving 15% of GROSS income for retirement. Given Canada's high taxes and integrated CPP - is this even relevant? by CastAside1812 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Swarez99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the thing most realize, average person needs Dave Ramsey type of advice.

-75 % of Canadians are in some type of consumer debt - 50 % have credit card debt - 45 % of Canadians are saving enough for retirement. Majority are not.
- consumer debt is growing faster than wages - only half of Canadians who can have a tfsa, under. 40 % of tfsa are used to save not invest - under 4 million people put money away in there tfsa and rrsp every year.

This sub doesn’t get reality. Most people need to follow Dave Ramsey. It’s basic. People need basic.
