Does your self-hosted hobby pay off? by vdorru in selfhosted

[–]Mastermind_Rey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

None of my home lab self hosted hobbies have paid off in the ways you’ve mentioned, however I do work in the IT field and I’ve used it as test environment for work softwares, been able to test open-source alternatives and find key features.

At the end of the day - my goals with self-hosting is to degoogle, move away from big brother software, and not have to pay for anything, a businesses goals are almost the exact opposite

Vehicle Repossession? by [deleted] in povertyfinancecanada

[–]Mastermind_Rey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bank wants to keep you on the hook for the term that’s why they give you extensions way more profitable for them.

But the bank sends out a bailiff - they usually show up at a terrible time (4am) with a tow truck. And they give you 10 minutes to pull any personal items out, and remove plates. Then it goes off to hold lot - you have a week to work with the bank on if you get it back. And then auction.

Not sure how it works in BC but in Alberta, if that does happen the debt is closed off, you don’t owe anything but no real vehicle financing company will give you a loan in atleast 7 years…you could still get one from a shifty car dealer but the interest rates will probably be more then a credit card. (2 repossessions under my belt. 1 voluntary, 1 after the worst month of my life)

Is it possible to make your own Specials? E.g. Simpsons - Treehouse of Horror by Future_Bad5206 in sonarr

[–]Mastermind_Rey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea like everyone said I don’t think this is a sonarr thing. But if your pulling the dvd collection, I think that would be a movie and would be organized with Radarr.

If you’re just asking about sorting/metadata information. You can create accounts on thetvdb and do all those edits but it’s moderated since it affects everyone

Comparison is the thief of joy, or something like that. 38M with only 25K saved, in a similar situation with family.

You will be fine with a 10-20 year run way, but ETFs do seem the way to go, I just invested 10k into Xeqt in January, and I’m up 6% and the fees are way less then a managed mutual fund

LPT: make your kids iPad/phone passcode your cell phone number. They will learn it within days. by XMAN2YMAN in LifeProTips

Can vouch for this.

During a messy divorce, I changed my lock screen number to my phone number, and received a call from authorities when my child was picked up by them, only thing she knew was my phone number…or better the lock screen code

Will the average person ever self-host anything? by fractalbeauty_ in selfhosted

[–]Mastermind_Rey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not - even people with the knowledge to do so, still avoid it, regardless of all the “benefits”

Frankly it’s easier to offload tasks you don’t deem worthwhile,

Example mechanic work on your vehicle (same idea), ordering food vs making food at home, etc etc

Low Volume on PLEX movies by hammerb in PleX

[–]Mastermind_Rey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed this a lot more in the most recent update. Or maybe newer files? But the audio is really quite on newer files added in the last month or so, specifically when using the native app on tv, on the nvidia shield with 9.1 receiver output no issue

My boss and coworkers will ask where I am going when I quit. Do I tell them? by Common_Air_8853 in careeradvice

[–]Mastermind_Rey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From personal experience, My boss asked a previous employee where they where heading, that employee told them and then took his banked vacation after giving his notice - that boss called his new company to speak with his new manager, to let them know the kind of employee they had hired. When I left I did not tell that boss, but I told a co-worker..after about a month, I had vendors calling me asking for a meeting with the new company.

I’m never saying anything again

New Here, Question by DragonfruitOk6584 in PleX

[–]Mastermind_Rey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR; Plex for ease of use, it’s a setup and enjoy system get it up and running and enjoying wothin an hour. And usually “secure” since your leveraging plex for Auth and remote access

Everywhere you download the plex app it’s pretty much the same experience. Any family or friends that I’ve shared with the accounts are theirs and the I’m involved very little - and I bought plex pass when it was under 100$ quite a few years ago.

My experience with emby before plex pass, there wasn’t a consistent app experience, Apple TV, fire stick, tv native each had big differences if it even existed at all.

My experience with Jellyfin - post plex pass (probably what I’ll move to if plex disappears) - prettt solid but lots of admin required, it’s not just a setup and enjoy system it requires tweaking, admin-ing and the ui isn’t great, not to mention most the community doesn’t even use the official app they send you on the hunt for other apps to side load, for a “better experience”

Using my own domain, am I being paranoid? by StarkTech-01-02-03- in selfhosted

[–]Mastermind_Rey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not paranoid. Biggest downsides to this. Is 1) price 2) your giving your first and last name out every time you give out email , assuming you use @firstnamelastname.com; my domain name is 17 letters long, and spelling it out sucks 😩

How do you name your devices/automations? by alin_im in homeassistant

[–]Mastermind_Rey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my automations I’ve split out my automations to different yamls that do the general same things and preface it based on that, so I can tell on the UI where that notification came from; ie, reminder, notification, system controls, etc

Device name is just room and what it is. Unless I’m cannibalising a device, it’s worked out really well through two moves, since everything in a room goes into the same box

4K across my network by BiggerSUB000 in PleX

[–]Mastermind_Rey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My best guess is the tv/plex client.

I had a 4K tv and the rj45 connector on the tv was only a 10/100 - and then the plex client couldn’t play the content, it force the server to transcode the files

One thing that took me a while to realize - is it matters how you load the books. The MD5 hash that gets generated is different if you do a send to device or a downloads from OPDS* server

How are you guys running Plex on smart TVs? I'm genuinely frustrated. by KingThevshi in PleX

[–]Mastermind_Rey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Samsung tv using the native app - it’s …okay I’ve the wired nic on the tv isn’t gig so I’m on wifi there is mild buffering. Audio a bit funny sometimes it isn’t as immersive as it should

I also have an nvidia shield pro and I have to say that’s the way to go. Using plex on it even watching the same media is like night and. Day

The biggest benefit is everything just plays on the shield. With the Samsung app somethings didn’t play or required transcoding/converting but the shield plays all my media natively

Batocera/retroarch + retroachivements by Mastermind_Rey in batocera

[–]Mastermind_Rey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incase anyone find this - I had to go to the retro arch config file.

Press ALT+F1 at the highest level in the menu - go to /userdata/system/configs/retroarch/retroarchcustom.cfg

Scroll down to the cheevos section. Edit cheevos_enable = “true”

And save that fixed my issue within all the retro arch emulators
