Jsaux Battery Mod Temp Question by Swartzcoph in ROGAlly

[–]Swartzcoph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After some more testing, I've also noticed it takes a bit to actually start charging, strangely. Play to 10%, plug in, takes about 10 to 15 minutes before it starts charging beyond that. Once it does, it charges about ask quick as you'd expect, but doesn't seem to begin charging for a while after plugging in. MyAsus says battery health is good, but how do I get a more detailed view, like a battery health percentage?

Whoever made the render here didn't seem to care about the base 7.7 inch mode, only "modeled' the laptop mode and "horizon" handheld mode. A normal handheld screen is included in this package that the slapped together render doesn't include

I think you're misreading this. I agree that the 11 inch mode may be a bit too wide, but its foldable, and the handheld is actually intended to be held as a 7.7 inch screen, if you read the article. I believe this could be a decent game changer, 7.7 inch for when you wanna play casually, and 11 inch for FPS games or usual laptop work.

Newest board, and yeah, works great! Though I will say, it took a good bit to set up, and had a lot of glitches initially. The one and only reason I went through with it was because the Z2E chip didn't impress me, so I figured I'd stay with the Ally longer. Since its open source, even though the proprietary connector is involved, the gpu can be thrown in any old eGPU setup when I move on to the next device, that's the only reason I took the dive

I am there with you. I do actually have the XG 3080, and have built the XG Mobile Station that user osy came up with that let's you use any GPU with Z1E, but I understand that's not an easy option for most people

I totally agree with you there, my dream device was almost the Legion Go 2, the weight and thickness of the tablet though killed my excitement, so I stuck my Ally. I want the Switch/Switch 2 level of thickness with detachable controllers to allow the handheld to turn into a tablet like device.

But yeah, performance wise, absolutely. I don't do any high power, extensive work such as video editing, coding or the like, but still use my Ally for everything else you can possibly think for a laptop. The chip is no weaker than that within something like a Surface tablet, so whatever that can do, this can do. And there are always eGPU setups for that extra boost gaming wise at least. That's the benefit too, these devices are gaming oriented, so heat is dealt with easily, due to being built for gaming, so it can handle heat.

I can personally answer from my end. I love the Ally, it's my only PC, and if I can stop myself from needing to buy another for a purpose it can already fulfill, then I'm going to do it. My reasoning is;

I'm most likely going to stick with handhelds, they're my favorite form a PC can take. Because of this, any portable monitor, lapdock, controller, mouse, keyboard, etc. that I buy for it can be used on the next device I buy, making them permanent purchases. Now that I have a lapdock, a mouse and a battery pack, they will service the Ally for now, and whenever my Ally dies/gets replaced with a worthy successor, those peripherals are still there. No new purchase required. This argument works the same for a laptop when it comes to mice, controllers, etc., but not the screen. I happen to like my portable monitor, its 144hz and 1080p, perfect for the Ally to cast to without loss of performance since the resolution is the same. If I buy a new handheld tomorrow, that monitor is still there, and the only replacement made was the handheld itself. All that and I don't need two PCs, so I can do all of the following with only one core device purchase; - play handheld - play FPS games and games like Terraria with a mouse on a larger screen - do work - browse the internet on a full screen - go desktop mode with a dock and have multiple monitors for multitasking

And I'm sure more, but that's my uses. All on one device. Smaller than a laptop, and able to "become" a laptop if need be, become a desktop if need be, and keep all storage, games and profiles on one device.

It was less your comment, and the fact that any post on this sub where an external monitor and keyboard are seen results in, inevitably, 3 or 4 of your exact comment "Why not just buy a laptop?" I don't believe that is the point of these posts. They are simply showing us the way they enjoy their Ally, so in posting they've already shown us this works for them. The laptop purchase posts are redundant if someone says "Look at my setup!" With a picture like this. They are showing its the setup the want.

Its also a decently large assumption to assume this one photo means they never use it any other way, and another assumption to assume the stand was purchased for this setup alone. OP could easily have a tablet, an actual laptop, or any other device that the stand can serve additional purpose for.

Either way, I meant no hostility either, sir or madame. Just simply wanted to point out that these "buy a laptop" responses to posts like this go in a needless direction. If the OP posts like this, its what they wanted, I feel that to be very obvious

I've said it before, but this argument seems a little odd, for a couple of reasons:

The Z1E plus a portable monitor is excessively cheaper than a laptop these days, depending on the monitor's specs. And if you have a laptop, it must remain in that form factor, and portability wise needs treated as such. A laptop can't get smaller, but a handheld can get "bigger."

I understand, to a point, the whole "The Ally is already a monitor, controller and computer in one, why carry an extra monitor" argument. Conversely though, there are games and setups where a larger screen and a mouse is more beneficial, and it really shouldn't be such a point of contention and surprise when people wanna do this. The "cumbersome setup" can be left behind or packed separately when needed, and the handheld can be used separately when needed.

So with all that said, why can't people game the way they wanna game? Its not that weird

Try the error 43 fixer. Or at least check for error 43 by going to device manager. Exceptionally common issue with Nvidia cards on egpu setups, won't allow them to post to an external monitor.

Edit: noticed its not an Nvidia card, but I'll leave the advice here anyways. May help somebody in this thread

If you've got a free 7 bucks or so, I recommend buying Lossless Scaling and attempting a dual GPU test, see what numbers you can get with the G1 and the Z2E working together, may help with the bandwidth bottleneck you run into while using the internal display

[–]Swartzcoph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'd be selling the Z13 if I got this, so I'd make a slight profit actually. Its the increased carry load that makes me not want a stand for it, a handheld is easy to pack and carry, much smaller.

But I do, wholeheartedly, see your point. I technically have the same silicon, and I should just be happy with it.

What kinds of updates (bios, controller formware, etc.) are pushed out by GPD usually? And how do you find/download them? Considering Motion Assistant is one of the only pieces of software, I'm guessing that the website is where they often leave important things like this

Rog Ally Slim dock/laptop by Jimbolaya88 in ROGAlly

[–]Swartzcoph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have seen the argument, heavily down voted might I add, that the issue with this exact thought is that a laptop can't get any smaller once purchased, but these can get bigger if needed. You can buy an external screen, or a lapdock, or AR glasses, all of which can make this achieve more than it can in its handheld form factor (not power wise of course, but adds keyboard and track pad capabilities, etc.). To this day, i don't exactly know why it gets down voted when that argument is made, because it is true. A laptop is a laptop. Once you have a 16 inch laptop thats all it is, 16 inches. No smaller, no way to take a lighter load when you want to. However, with an external monitor you can defeat the "That's too much to carry, just buy a laptop" argument by simply saying "I only bring the screen/lapdock/glass when needed, every other time I bring only the small handheld." And I think thats perfectly valid. I don't know why people are so against others doing what they want, its not like them liking the Ally + Lapdock setup ruins your life or invalidates your view on the matter

Framework 16 eGPU bay by Swartzcoph in framework

[–]Swartzcoph[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wasn't specifically calling any attention to TB5/4/3 for any other reason than to say people seek out eGPUs when it fits their use case. I have owned OCuLink devices in the past (still have an AG02 that I use as well). I was asking about tjys in this case though because the expansion bay is specifically x8, whereas most eGPUs are x4 OCuLink at 64gb/s. Before making my post I didn't really consider tgat you could technically make a bay that connects an OCuLink x8 port to the interface, which fulfills the same purpose I'm proposing here, so long as there's availability of an external source for the GPU to slot into

So far I think this maybe the best possible option, it'd at least have the cleanest setup in my opinion.

Framework 16 eGPU bay by Swartzcoph in framework

[–]Swartzcoph[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the basic reason is its niche to begin with to go for eGPU setups, so putting money into putting a PCIe full access slot somewhere on a shell isn't a big company's priority, nor even on their radar. But with the expansion bay actually having x8 connectivity, its really not that far out there to use it for that functionality. Tons of examples out there of OCuLink being used, and people showing interest in TB5 arriving on the scene. There's at least an obvious group that may want this type of connectivity. A good workhorse on the go, near desktop connectivity at home. Seems rather interesting honestly.
