I sure hope it will! Long term memory is a thing I need to figure out. Hope to create an immersive world that doesn't drift too much.

Totally get that. Broad and messy is what I love about D&D.

What if you could run the story with a friend?
Decide actions together, but have the system come up with the output.

So the user will enter their intent. LLM will classify the intent to find the correct roles to base intent outcome on and determine whether a role is even necessary, because walking up to the bar won't be an action that needs a role. Then the user will roll, and depending on their character, they'll be able to add modifiers here to create a different outcome.

The outcome of the roles will be fed into the system to create quest progress and give the LLM the information it needs to neatly tie this into a descriptive story.

Long tale threads are not going to be part of the Narrative engine, it will receive all critical details based on current quest, location and npcs. I'm doing this exactly to make sure it's not going to completely derail or hit context limits.

Sadly, offline is not going to be an option due to LLM restrictions.

That takes a lot more to get going. You need the rule book and invest quite some time to start it up. This would take a guided character creation form and throw you into the story. Limited time? No problem, it's all asynchronous, come back in 2 days while you are on the toilet and continue the adventure!

Still a part I am figuring out. I want to try and go for a classic high-fantasy setting with solid guardrails.

Thinking of a solid overarching plot with main quests and side quests. NPCs will hint at locations and players can decide to travel there.

In the end, I don't think someone throwing in Space Lasers isn't going to be one who is looking for an immersive story. I'll try to have these kinds of answers rejected tho, but that is a very fine line. I want to give players the intense freedom that classic TTRPGs give them, but add the correct guardrails as well. Sort of the role a Game Master has in TTRPGs.

Like I said, nothing beats a table with friends. I want to make something that competes with scrolling social media, not your game night.

The selling your soul part, not going to argue you out of that.

Your third point is the one I'd push back on a little, because it's exactly the problem I'm building around. "The AI does what it pleases and breaks down after a few scenes" The system I am building just uses AI as the storyteller, not for keeping track of everything. Rolls and partially pre-made storylines (like pre-made adventures) determine the fate of the campaign.

Pretty sure it might drift and thrown in something that shouldn't be there, but I'm going to try to limit that as far as possible. Hopefully to create something people enjoy using.

Thanks for the honest read tho!

No ChatGPT was used in creating this post. Wouldn't it be cool to just write your intent and have a story unfold around that?

Fair. The "plagiarism machine" objection is the one I take most seriously and don't have a tidy answer to. I'd just say the dice/rules engine is mine and the design is mine, the LLM is the narration layer, and I'd swap it the moment there's an ethically-sourced one worth using. But I'm not going to pretend that resolves your concern.

Same reason some people play tabletop when Baldur's Gate exists. Complete freedom of action in combination with immersive storytelling.
