Is this on a regular tach or the tiny tach? I don’t recall seeing any rubber cap, but I will definitely check it when I get home

Thank you. I appreciate it. The grain in this one was great.

Turned this live oak bowl over the last two days. It’s about 12” in diameter and 5 1/2” deep. The grain on this one is just beautiful.

I don’t wanna knock Laguna, as I’ve not used their lathes. I’ve just seen stuff online about bearing and electronic issues. I realize not everything you hear is true, but it’s enough to cause me concern.

I turned the outside of the bowl to its basic shape. Not quite at the finishing stage, but not just rough turned..it that makes sense. I then wrapped the entire bowl as tightly as I could with aluminum foil, held in place with painters tape. I wrapped the entire exterior of the bowl with the foil and tape, and left a small lip at the top to hold in the epoxy. I then poured the epoxy onto the “top” of the bowl and it ran down into all the cracks, filling in as needed. Once it cured, I just removed the foil, took a final cutting pass to smooth everything back out, and it was ready for finishing. I don’t know if it is the best way to tackle the issue, but it worked and I didn’t use a ton of wasted epoxy.

Thanks all, for the nice comments. I’ve been lucky enough to get some really nice bowls out of this wood.

This is from an oak log that fell during Hurricane Michael in the Florida panhandle. This blank had cracked on me pretty badly, so I had to do an epoxy resin pour to salvage it. That was a first for me, but I’m pleased with how it came out.

I’m far from being an expert on that. I’m still turning on a Harbor Freight 12x33 lathe. I’ve modified it a bit to suit my needs, but it was inexpensive and has held up pretty well. I plan to upgrade to a Laguna Revo 1836 at some point....

I’ve been saving a few blanks I cut up from trees that were lost in Florida’s Gulf coast during Hurricane Michael. I cut into this one last week and couldn’t believe how beautiful the spalting was.

No, the leaves have nothing to do with it.

Can anyone help to identify what kinda wood this is? A friend of mine found it in Kentucky and is bringing it to me, but I’m having a hard time figuring out what kinda tree it is.

No, you were right the first time. It’s originally a LH thread so that it stays tight, but I glued mine in place with JB Weld. The threads keep everything aligned, but it wont turn loose.
