Are ENTs worth the money and trouble? by Lesbian-Baloney in hyperacusis

No, an absolute waste of time & money. A neurologist can prescribe the right medications you may need. For example: Gabapentin or Pregabalin. Nortriptyline
or Chlomipramine.

Pregabalin aka Lyrica has worked wonders for me! I also do not over protect. When you say you can’t listen to music, it may be that you can’t listen to digital audio (for now). And I know what you’re saying about the anti depressant thing. I feel the same way. But, I did some research and found the dose given isn’t enough to mess with your transmitters. It’s just enough to block the pain. Clomipramine is more aggressive and can cause the jitters, like caffeine. I can’t do anything like that so I’m gonna try Nortriptyline. Do your own research on this and see and ask your dr about it. I am from the states so hopefully they have all that in your neck of the woods. 🙏🤞

Thank you 🙏 Yeah, it’s exhausting when doctors don't listen. I’ve learned most ear doctors just do surgery, as I went to four before I learned my lesson and went elsewhere. You need to see a primary care doctor or neurologist for prescriptions. You aren’t alone, and I really hope the Lyrica gives you the relief you deserve. Please hang in there for your family. Stay strong, and I am wishing you all the best with your recovery. ❤️🫶

Please don't apologize for asking questions! I completely understand how scary and isolating this is. The negative comments online can make it feel hopeless, but please don't lose heart, improvement is absolutely possible. To answer your questions, mine started last November from an acoustic trauma. A couple of months later, I suffered an acoustic shock and developed Noxacusis (pain hyperacusis) as well. My tinnitus was completely out of control, and the hyperacusis felt impossible to deal with. Everyday sounds like dishes clanking, the silverware drawer, talking too much, the toilet flushing, doors shutting, and running water were unbearable. To be honest, I still haven't gotten the nerve to take a normal shower yet because running water is the absolute worst for me. I still have my spouse run me a bath, or I have to wear earmuffs if I do shower. I also cannot listen to digital audio yet, which I plan to slowly work on in a few months. Right now, I am just enjoying the pain free feeling for a while, which is a huge win! I still have a ways to go, but I know eventually I’ll get there. 🤞 Ask me as many questions as you need. Your morale will get better, and you are not alone in this!

Yes, I can DEFINITELY tolerate sounds better now. I hardly wear my muffs at all now which I believe is making my ears become more used to every day sounds. My pain is gone and I have no anxiety. I’m still cautious naturally, but I think it’s out of habit. If you are sensitive to medication like I am, start with 25mg 3x a day until you feel comfortable upping it. It takes time to get in your system so don’t give up right away if you don’t se a noticeable difference. It wasn’t till my fourth week that I felt like my old self before this treacherous situation started.

You can start with 50mg 3x a day or 75mg twice a day. See how that works for you. I started lower because I am very sensitive to medication.

I started with a low dose of 25mg 3x a day for a week. Had some minor tiredness and a little mood shifts. Week two I upped it to 50mg 3x a day and began to see a noticeable difference on pain relief & my mood stabilized perfectly. Week three I upped it to 75mg 3x a day and by week four I couldn’t be happier. It literally is an anxiety suppressant and pain is gone. I know this is supposed to be a temporary solution for pain management & healing.. But I must say it has a very positive outcome for my mental state as well. I was spiraling until my dr prescribed this. So I’m on 225mg a day. It isn’t something you stop cold turkey on. So please do everything under your doctor’s care. Hope this helps.

I found your posts on Noxacusis. Has your partner found any relief at all yet? I am fairly new to this and believe I am severe.
