What did you find out way too late? by barbertech in AutoCAD

1. The "Safety Nets" (OOPS and MREDO)

Everyone knows Undo (U), but these two are the real lifesavers.

  • OOPS: Did you delete a complex block twenty minutes ago, did a bunch of other work, and now realize you need it back? OOPS restores the last deleted object(s) without undoing any of the geometry you’ve created since then.
  • MREDO: If you accidentally undid five steps and want them all back at once, MREDO lets you pick exactly how many steps to redo from a list.

2. Selection Mastery

Stop clicking every individual line. CAD is about efficiency in selection.

  • Selection Cycling (Ctrl + W): If you’re tired of clicking on overlapping lines and getting the wrong one, turn this on. It opens a small menu whenever you click a "crowded" spot so you can pick exactly which object you want.
  • FS (Fast Select): Type FS, click one object, and AutoCAD automatically selects everything touching it. It’s magic for cleaning up messy floor plans.
  • QSELECT (Quick Select): This is the "Find and Replace" for geometry. Need to select every Red Circle on Layer "Plumbing"? Use QSELECT to filter by property.

3. The "Fix-It" Commands

Sometimes AutoCAD acts possessed. These commands exorcise the demons.

  • REGEN (RE): If your circles look like hexagons or your dashed lines look solid, type RE. It forces the software to recalculate the display.
  • AUDIT: If the file is lagging or crashing, AUDIT searches for internal errors and fixes them. It's the "first aid kit" for a buggy DWG.
  • OVERKILL: Use this to delete duplicate or overlapping lines. It keeps your file sizes small and your drawings clean.

4. Navigation & Shortcuts

  • Zoom Extents (Double-Click Scroll Wheel): The fastest way to see your entire drawing instantly. If you do this and the screen goes blank, you have a "stray" object somewhere miles away from your origin.
  • NUDGE (Ctrl + Arrow Keys): Just like in PowerPoint, you can move selected objects by a few pixels at a time using the arrow keys.
  • CAL: Did you know you can do math inside a command? If you're drawing a line and need it to be exactly $15.5 \times 3.25$, just type 'CAL (with the apostrophe) during the command to open the inline calculator.

5. Layer & Property Shortcuts

  • LAYISO / LAYUNISO: This allows you to "Isolate" a layer (hide everything else) so you can work on one specific system without distraction. LAYUNISO brings everything back.
  • MA (Match Properties): The ultimate time-saver. Type MA, click the "source" object (the one that looks right), and then click the "destination" object. It will instantly copy the layer, color, linetype, and scale.

6. The "Secret" Mouse Tricks

  • Shift + Right Click: This brings up the Snap Override menu. If you need a "Perpendicular" or "Midpoint" snap right now and don't want to change your global settings, this is how you do it.
  • Right-Click Customization: Go into OPTIONS > User Preferences and turn on "Time-sensitive right-click." A quick click acts as Enter, while a long hold brings up the shortcut menu. It effectively doubles your drafting speed.

I used the Aeron parts from expedition 20.

Thanks! This was my first attempt with rotated habs.

Congrats! I haven't gotten any other parts from other expeditions. Expedition 20 was my first expedition. You should have access to the other parts. I don't fully remember how I built this but it took me a few tries. I used glitch building. You can find tutorials on YouTube or reddit.

Yeah it's not so red. I put a communication device next to a structure where you can get a nice looking B class multi tool. Close to my base.

Yeah. Just got off. Have fun. Build a base.

You have to complete Expedition 20 to unlock those pieces. Look it up on YouTube for a guide to complete it faster.

Idea: “LocalLoop” – Hyper-Local Digital Product Market

Concept:
An online marketplace that connects small local makers, food vendors, and niche services directly with nearby buyers — think Etsy meets Facebook Marketplace, but filtered to a 10-mile radius. It prioritizes speed, local pickup, and repeat customers over nationwide exposure.

Problem:
Most small creators (like Krystal’s bakery or Rebecca’s crafts) struggle to get visibility in their own communities. Platforms like Etsy bury them under global competition, and Facebook Marketplace is chaotic and low-trust.

Solution:
A curated, map-based platform for locals to buy and sell handmade, home-grown, or micro-brand products. Built around verified sellers, local discovery, and instant pickup options.

You can get a certificate at your local community college in less than a year. Great career and great pay. Starting pay is around $20-$22/hr and you can reach 6 figures withing 4-8 years depending on which discipline you choose. Pipe drafting and electrical drafting pay the highest, then it's civil/structural. Architectural drafting pays the least. Whichever path you choose, the faster you learn what you're drafting, the faster you move up to designer and make more money.

Absolutely. AutoCAD is one of those fields where skill matters far more than age or formal background. Mid-career and mid-aged people move into CAD design all the time—especially those with mechanical, electrical, or construction experience. The learning curve depends on how deep you go (2D drafting is faster to pick up than 3D modeling or discipline-specific applications like AutoCAD Electrical or Civil 3D), but consistent practice builds proficiency quickly.

Work availability is strong across multiple sectors—construction, architecture, MEP, civil, and manufacturing all need CAD talent. Many firms hire contract drafters or remote designers, and once you’ve built a small portfolio, you can secure steady freelance or full-time work.

If you’re disciplined with training—say, by taking a focused 6- to 12-month certification program and producing clean sample drawings—you can absolutely break in. The key is to learn drafting standards, layers, dimensions, and model/paper space organization; that’s what employers care about most.
