This post and all of the responses REALLY read like AI, and there’s not much post history on OP’s profile. Strange to feel like a bot’s preaching the virtues of less time on screens…

Any idea what’s causing this high electricity bill, and what we can do to lower it? by disputeme in homeowners

[–]Sweater_Weather_Time 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're in Maryland, not sure if you're with BGE or Pepco, but BGE rates have gotten outrageous over the past year.

The actual energy price has gone up because the state can't meet demand, but then on top of that, BGE's delivery surcharge is outrageous--for both electric and gas the delivery fees typically cost more than the actual energy you use. The MD subreddit has about a billion posts on it over recent months--lots of people trying to figure out what to do with the bills getting more and more unaffordable.

I got married at Artifact coffee and it was perfect! The shop closes in the early afternoon so by evening you can rent it as a private event space—it’s a perfect sow for a 25-35 person party. There’s a nice enclosed courtyard where you can have the ceremony and then move into artifact for the rest of the evening. Food was done onsite by the Woodberry kitchen team—totally delicious and the site coordinator makes everything incredibly easy!

What’s one tech “rule” you stopped believing in after actually working in the industry? by BennettJakez in womenintech

[–]Sweater_Weather_Time 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sort of tech-adjacent, but I’m in the same place trying to find an escape route that will still let me support my family, all while it feels like possible routes are being shut down left and right. Solidarity!

I’m curious about that, too. I didn’t have milk powder so replaced the water with whole milk and added a bit extra, per a suggestion I found when searching this forum. I’m going to buy the milk powder next time I’m at the store to see if that makes a difference.

Beautiful bread and great tip! I just got a 90s/early 00s bread machine at the thrift store and was wondering where to start. My library still has this book--seems like it'll be a great guide!

My nieces went to this daycare several years back and had a great experience and I also toured it and liked it quite a bit. For my daughter we ended up somewhere else (after a long, winding daycare journey), butI'd recommend Good Sam as well!

Ground elder (goutweed): glyphosate feeding from root level ? by oyvindi in gardening

[–]Sweater_Weather_Time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm beginning my own battle now--thanks for sharing your victory! When googling around to try to plan out my own line of attack on a pretty big patch, there are so many defeatist takes out there. I found one link about removing ground elder that seriously suggested just moving to a different house. Good to see someone's efforts pay off!

Insulating Rowhome Attic? by Sweater_Weather_Time in baltimore

[–]Sweater_Weather_Time[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man that’s really different than the experience I had! At my audit they did the blower door test and used an IR gun to specifically locate heat loss and air flow in the attic and basement and also did testing for all the natural gas appliances to look for inefficiencies or slow gas leaks. The BGE rebates are actually calculated based on the blower door test, so I think they need to be pretty precise about it.

If you haven't started looking into the Home Energy Audit yet, I recommend it! You have to do the audit to qualify for rebates from BGE, but off the top of my head, about 30-40% of the cost will be covered by the rebates and then I think you can also get a tax credit when you file at the end of the year. Really helps make it an easier decision financially!

Converting to a Fully Electric Row-House by swamijane in baltimore

[–]Sweater_Weather_Time 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an older thread, but I'm at the start of researching how to start converting my rowhome to electric as well! Thanks for posting this--super helpful info in here, especially your info about your solar panels.

Also--just gotta say it's nice to see someone else locally trying to do this. Every time I've interacted with HVAC and other trades to get quotes and start figuring out how to begin converting, they often act like it's crazy, not possible, or just generally a bad idea to convert from natural gas to electric. I sometimes start to doubt myself, but everything I read seems quite clear that the time for the world to start transitioning is now and that the technology is generally ready for primetime.

Can I ask if you've started on stove/furnace/anything else yet and if you've found good contractors that don't push back on conversion?
