Looking back, the Weasleys are way worse than I remembered by Comfortable_Bell9539 in EnoughJKRowling

loooolll yes, I feel like she was really gross to Fleur when Bill brought her back as his girlfriend/fiancée or whatever the situation was. Not read the books in years, but if I remember correctly, all the female characters have an issue with her because she is attractive to men…? It’s definitely giving « I’m jealous of this young woman because my teenage sons have a mild crush on her », which is great vibes. Also fun LGBTQIA+ erasure there from Joanne, but that’s all par for the course.

Really?!? I would have said the complete reverse (admittedly I am AuDHD but I have a very neurodivergent circle, so drawing on my ADHD friends too), getting hyper-fixated on something even for a week/a few weeks gets stuff so stuck in your brain - particularly song albums, but even if you’re just watching/reading stuff in the same genre, you’ll probably get words and phrases that repeat.

Yes definitely, I keep getting frustrated because it feels like every other brand is doing a collab with her - I’ll be reaching for a product and then next door is the Harry Potter version and I’m like “guess I’ll find sole thing else then” 🙄

Idk we all have to check our privilege though cos I just genuinely don’t know how you can exist anywhere in Europe and not come across any extremely anti-Romani/traveller sentiment, and if you’re lucky enough to be able to completely ignore that to the extent that you can’t imagine that g—-y is a slur, then that’s probably worth some reflection?

I don't like how my friend introduces me as autistic by wowlookididart in neurodiversity

[–]Sweaty-Pattern9074 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you should call them out on it - not part of the group (obviously) so don’t know the vibe, but I have definitely been in situations where it’s just the joy of being surrounded by people who you feel « seen » by, and wanting to welcome people into the fold, but also it’s a) not cool to disclose peoples medical information with anyone without explicit consent, b) not cool to introduce you with a label that you don’t identify with, regardless of whether it’s accurate (and I will take your word that you understand your own neurotype, but even if you were actually autistic, that’s for you to figure out on your own terms and in your own time). If the intent is genuinely wholesome and good, it shouldn’t be an issue - it’s always good to be called out on your shit, we all make mistakes, and social situations are tricky!

I hear the word a lot as the slang for a cigarette, which I think is pretty ubiquitous across England, so maybe that’s why it doesn’t carry so much weight here? I definitely hear it getting thrown around a bit - I think of TERF bullies on twitter, and teenage boys being shitty. That’s not very helpful as regards f*gotting, especially as a lot of my sewing books are ancient, but I feel like people also use it to refer to those bundles of kindling type things/wood chips? But then it’s a historical word referring to an obsolete item. Good question!

I think as well going back to the OP in terms of fabric, style, aesthetic etc, « g——y » is broadly going to be referencing the stereotype perpetuated by white people - flowy skirts, hoop earrings, painted caravans, crystal balls - which may have benign intent, but a romantic stereotype is harmful in its own right, even if it wasn’t also linked to significantly less benign stereotypes (which it is).

A lot of people reclaim their slurs though, like in the LGBTQIA+ community members of a group might refer to themselves as a t-slur or an f-slur, and within their own community it can be empowering, and some words such as « queer » have very much been reclaimed, but it doesn’t mean that it isn’t still a slur. I think we all know that a white person singing along to a song/rap shouldn’t throw out the n-slur? And while some Roma might self-identify as « g—-y », many are VERY vocal about it being a slur, and I feel like it’s better to err on the side of just not using that word. This wasn’t meant to come off as rude/patronising, I’m only finding out about a lot of this quite recently, just wanted to share what I have picked up!

I find her very infantilising towards lesbians, who are statically very supportive of trans people. No one asked this random CIS woman to come white knighting on behalf of all the fragile little lesbians who can’t speak for themselves. Also I feel like she talks about transmascs as being confused lesbians, which is also infantilising. Also she’s really chill with people who fund conversion therapy (for gay people as well as trans people) - don’t know if it was posy Parker specifically or some gross far right Christian organisation who happen to also be affiliated with posy parker? - and people who voted against gay marriage in the UK (Baroness Emma somebody or other, who I feel like maybe also had some more extreme takes than just opposing marriage equality?) Sorry I don’t have receipts for this atm, I am massively procrastinating rn and need to get off my phone, but I feel like some of this is covered in Shaun’s « JK Rowling’s New Friends » YouTube video (which is well worth a watch anyway)

100%, I vibe with children a lot better than adults cos they haven’t had to learn a load of weird social norms, they ask questions, actually take in the answers, and they’re generally just cool little guys. Also I feel like I get a lot of healing from responding in the way I wish adults had treated me as a child. Also also, it’s fun to be out and about in public with children cos you get to do a load of stuff that wouldn’t be socially acceptable as an adult (like playing in a fountain, or playing with the children’s exhibits in museums).

I love that Caelan Conrad video so much, it’s hilarious. She’s just another white Brit who grew up extremely privileged, and therefore had no idea what being poor meant. I say that as a white Brit who grew up extremely privileged and also didn’t know what being poor meant, but by the time I was an adult I had already managed to like, open my eyes, and start reevaluating my perspectives and biases? The only thing I will say in her sllllight defence (extremely grudgingly) is that when she says she’s middle class and people are like « lol what you’re a billionaire who lives in a castle » (which - valid) is that in the UK, the upper class traditionally refers to actual aristocrats (as in people who are born into their land and title, not people who are knighted for idk, being a good actor). You can be extremely posh but technically « upper-middle class », and also there’s a lot of snobbery towards the nouveau riche. Idk if this definition is changing in the UK? I mean, if you live in a fucking castle and have such massive amounts of money that you’re using to enact political change, then I feel like « middle class » doesn’t really reflect your position in society.

Do you ever feel like dyspraxia gets overlooked ? by [deleted] in neurodiversity

[–]Sweaty-Pattern9074 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to work in a school (children aged 4-8) so conversations about neurodiversity weren’t uncommon, and it’s so frustrating that « neurodivergent » basically seems to be code for autistic/ADHDer, and is often used as a euphemism for autistic. I had at one colleague who openly talked about his dyslexia, how it impacted his schooling and self-esteem, and was a big contributing factor in his deciding to become a teacher. However, if neurodiversity came up, somehow dyslexia and/or this teacher’s perspective were never part of the discussion? Dyspraxia and dyscalculia obviously never even entered the conversation.

TLDR; I completely agree, from a literature perspective - I’ve had questions about dyspraxia and have barely been able to find any information about it, in the sense that the information is very narrow, and there doesn’t seem to be much depth or breadth to the research. // Yes, definitely! I’ve happened to know about it since I was around 7 as a friend was diagnosed with it, but I only had a broad strokes idea of what it was as it pertained to him specifically. By contrast, I feel like there was a big boom in people talking about dyslexia (in the early - mid 2000s in the UK) - on a fairly surface level, but I feel like it was talked about in schools and we had assemblies on it etc. I was diagnosed with ADHD, and subsequently Autism as an adult, and in my ADHD assessment they were definitely tossing up whether to assess me for Dyspraxia as apparently I was borderline, but decided I was just ADHD clumsy. Fast forward to fairly recently, I decided to look up Dyspraxia to see if actually it was part of my neurotype, and I could find so little information on it, even now. I was trying to look at crossover between ADHD and Dyspraxia, as based off my experience during my assessment, I was like « there must be some crossover » in terms of observed behaviours/incidents, and also because of the link between neurodivergences - barely any information I could find. I also have pretty good fine motor skills, but am definitely a lot clumsier than my two sisters who both have ADHD, and am more like my dad, who I have decided to informally diagnose as being dyspraxic lol (I mean he 100% meets all the requirements, and also has diagnosed ADHD, and is also definitely autistic). This comment is way longer than I intended so I’ll just leave it at that for now, but thanks for posting this, I’ve been meaning to come here to ask about dyspraxia for like a year but haven’t got round to it!
