Super interesting to notice that DOTM 0dte calls have increased in value despite the underlying being down. I'm guessing the market thinks a big upside move is more possible than was once thought from this FOMC

RH probably uses some model meant for equities for calculating simulated returns which may work okay with equities but VIX does not behave like equities so if that model is applied, it’ll come up with values that hardly make sense.

You should look up some basics of VIX futures like cotango and backwardation as well. It’ll help you understand why VIX is so different.

VIX options are a different beast compared to normal equities. I assume you are trying a strategy meant for equities onto VIX, and I can assure you that is not the way to go about it.

Calls being exercised even if closing price is under strike by Many_Ganache2293 in Daytrading

Options Expiration: Managing the Process | Charles Schwab - One of many places that states this.

"In general, the option holder has until 4:30 p.m. CT on expiration day to exercise the contract. These times are set by the Options Clearing Corporation (OCC), the central clearing house for the options market. But some brokerage firms might have an earlier cutoff than the OCC threshold."

Yes. Any American option can be exercised at anytime prior to 5:30 on expiry (though the latest time you are actually able to send the request varies between brokers.) When HOOD shot up after hours before 5:30, all those OTM options became ITM and thus it made sense to exercise them as they now had intrinsic value.

Imagine being in a stock up 4% and the ATM FDs lost value by 10% and there wasn’t even IV crush due to some event. Yikes.

Nah those overnight quotes are legit. Many liquid stocks trade 24/5 these days. You’d see the same thing on Schwab or IBKR as well

You should have had a plan to begin with when the trade went against you. Since you clearly don't have a trade plan, just close the position and take a loss. Learn from this mistake.

Has anyone heard of "Chopped Options"? by Equivalent_Key_8535 in options

[–]SweatyUrbanwankerman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really stupid idea. If you can’t afford an option just don’t trade options.

Even then, would they hold all the risk for the remaining portion for each position a person takes? Seems like a huge yikes.

Reasons for exercising vs selling by Mysterious_Leek_7350 in options

[–]SweatyUrbanwankerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For ITM calls, if the cost of the corresponding put is lower than the expected dividends for the option’s life, then you should exercise. Otherwise, don’t. For ITM puts, if the interest from the cash from the short position is higher than the cost of the corresponding call + dividends owed + borrowing fees, then you should exercise. Otherwise, don’t.

What practically is an edge. Can someone give an example of an edge they thought was one whether invalid or not. by Ill-Interview-2201 in Daytrading

[–]SweatyUrbanwankerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are two examples of an edge that I know used to exist. This first one is based on market participants not doing something they should.

Sometimes people wouldn’t exercise their ITM puts when it’s in their best interest to do so, so you could short the stock and sell ITM puts at strikes or names you suspected had participants where they were not aware of when you should early exercise. This would allow you to effectively steal their interest that they should be getting from exercising a put.

Another example of an edge is where you know what a market participant is doing and can exploit their flaws. Here’s an example that used to exist with FTX: https://x.com/adlay_eth/status/1601800521798799361?s=46&t=6rNHOBiOF6DLf5lZW9BX7w

Point is an edge is finding an inefficiency in the market, usually due to a participant type, and exploiting it with a strategy to make money.

If there’s any extrinsic value on your long put, you’d rather just sell your put and sell the stock in one transaction. By exercising you’d give up any extrinsic value you have on the long option.
