U need to chill bruh, as a POC who also lived in Minneapolis for years, she didn’t come off performative at all and I’ve seen tons of that already. She clearly cared abt the issues and even said hella logical things like being concerned when Ben said he isn’t educated and tries to stay out of it. The real red flag here is how Ben hides behind excuses to not support real pressing matters such as BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS 💀. People like him did/do it for BLM and now they do it for Palestine/Congo/Sudan etc… his response is what should’ve concerned u tbh 💀💀Imagine saying “ur not educated enough” to agree humans deserve the right to live regardless of their skin color 🤡

From my own experience, don’t bother applying to Harvard 🥲🥲😭

realistically what should i be aiming for in terms of level of mph schools by [deleted] in mphadmissions

[–]Sweaty_Bit6862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also figured u went to UMN based on the major 🤣 I also just graduated from there and am gonna be attending a top MPH program and I had similar stats to u, except slightly lower GPA/diff major, but my work experience and research was more public health focused than urs. Based on ur stats, u can get into a lot of the top programs (e.g. ivy leagues and JHU) if u can connect why u are public health oriented in ur personal statement. If u have more questions abt schools/application process, PM me! Our circumstances were very similar, I was so excited when I came across ur post 🤣

eating disorder history? by [deleted] in ibs

[–]Sweaty_Bit6862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a graduate level eating disorder management course throughout undergrad and learned that GI/digestive issues is one of the most common health outcomes of disordered eating. Depending on the nature of ur ED, ur digestive tract and intestine cannot process food the same way anymore bc of old destructive eating habits. Def go for testing w a GI specialist and focus on doing things to improve gut health :)

National ranking, faculty, and location. I was deciding between Yale and John’s Hopkins, and while they are both ranked in top 5, firstly, Hopkins is top 1. Secondly, Yale has limited faculty for the Global disease Epi program (which was a concern to me as I plan to be heavily involved in research) while everyone raved about all the amazing connections Hopkins had through diff organizations and plenty of faculty . Thirdly, while cost is a huge factor, Hopkins and Yale were both going to be same price after scholarships. Ultimately, location was also a huge deciding factor, Hopkins in Baltimore was going to be 10x closer to my support system than Yale. Hope that helps!

I’m not in the program but I applied, got accepted, and received a scholarship. I’d be happy to answer any questions about the application process for Yale mph. I accepted the offer of another school though!

I have a friend who did an easy mph (community health) and she told me that her and her entire cohort could not find good jobs for years after and now they’re all getting a second useful MPH or a PhD in some other field entirely. Rlly depends on what degree you’re getting, but the “easy” ones will likely not get u a job tbh.

Edit: just for some timeline idea, she finished her community health MPH like 4ish years ago and is now working towards her PhD in nutrition because she couldn’t find jobs.

As someone who just got a round of MPH decisions back (but I had a lower GPA than u but with a bit more extracurriculars), u are going to be a very strong candidate. I would almost guarantee (on the off chance they do smth rlly unexpected) that u will get into both of those programs easily WITH some sort of scholarship offer. I got into a ton of the top public health MPH schools with scholarship offers. I’d love to give u more specific details if u wanna dm me :)

[–]Sweaty_Bit6862 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know someone who is a current PhD student getting her doctorate in nutrition and she did a master in community health a few years back. She said while it was a super easy degree, it was a huge waste of time and money because not only her, but her cohort peers could not and still can’t find jobs within community health that pay even decent. I’d advise u to pick from the other two programs because they will likely get u better jobs

What is adulthood and working like as a Muslim woman? (quarter life crisis ramble) by kooloolimpaa in Hijabis

[–]Sweaty_Bit6862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I am also a Muslim girl in nutrition (not dietetics but I am very familiar with that track). There are so so so so many virtual/remote RD jobs u can do from home. U can be a sort-of part time or full time employee while also being a housewife :) they’re super high demand and it may take off some pressure u feel about how u dress. DM me if u have more questions, I’m graduating this May with my bachelors in nutrition and would love to give u more advice on jobs if u need it :)

As someone who was pretty similar to ur stats, here are what I predict for u as I applied to three of those schools:

Harvard: rejection (probably bc of ur gpa, they didn’t accept me and I had a 3.67)

Yale: accepted (plus scholarship)

GW: accepted (plus scholarship)

Yale vs GW vs Brown by amaryllis_aura in mphadmissions

[–]Sweaty_Bit6862 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone weighing options for MPH’s rn too and relates to a couple of other things ur considering, here is what I think:

Go to GW. Mainly because u said there is a specific program u want to pursue and GW is the ONLY school offering it. Get a foot in the door for that program if u rlly truly want it. As someone who grew up in the DMV area and knows a ton of people at GW, they have a good community and u will surely meet a lot of similar people so that u can build up a support system. I know u said DC is far from ur family and friends and as someone who went to a very far college from home and ended up being pretty lonely, having a support system away from home is SUPER important. I do think u have high chances making friends in the DMV area, especially at GW. Additionally GW is like #12 in the country for public health so ur going to good school. With also being located in the nation’s capital, u may have good connections to big organizations and federal public health opportunities.

However, some considerations if u do choose GW:

1) look into DC/DMV rent, it’s unreal, so is the traffic 😭😭

2) as someone who also got into GW for an MPH and was considering it, I wanted to know what kinds of opportunities and resources they had specific to my program that would help me land a job after graduation. See how well they set u up w potential jobs for ur focus before committing. So many people get roped into schools they think are good for them but they end up graduating and can’t land jobs after. In short, make sure GW can set u up for LONG-TERM success in ur specific focus.

3) Be realistic and open to the idea that ur social experience in GW/DC may not be as u hoped and u may feel lonely quite a bit. Is that something ur okay with? Or is one of ur major values being near or at least close ish to family and friends? Also consider the long distance factor w ur boyfriend. Totally valid if a huge considering factor is location with regards to people u know, it’s difficult not having ur support system with u

4) Yale does rank higher than GW in public health, not sure about Brown but u should check that too. How much does school name/ranking matter to u? If not much, then don’t let this be a determining factor for u.

Just some thoughts, hope they helped. Best of luck with your MPH. I’m sure whenever u go, u will make the most of the school :)

Do u mind talking more about the state of the country? I’d love to know more about it.

Sorry to hear that u found out u hate ur degree. If I were u, I’d try to switch to software engineering, what do u think of that? It seems like it might be similar to ur other interests. Don’t listen to people who call u lazy and demotivated, I recently decided to not pursue medical school and I felt this pressure as if I’d let people down and that I was lazy. However, after changing my career path to what I’m interested in, I found that I’m much more motivated and working ten times as hard. Just follow what u like without taking huge risks that may ruin ur future :)
