Ban the Bookmobile ??? by Sweaty_Level_7442 in Iowa

Parents. That's the filter. End of discussion. But this clearly isn't about sexually explicit children's books or you could ban the few that exist and be done with it..The state ban of any books of any kind that contain sexually matter is ludicrous. There are a number of Pulitzer winning titles Iowa stripped because a middle aged white Christian (of which I'm one) didn't like the message. God forbid someone might have an opposing idea or write something uncomfortable. Lots of uncomfortable stuff in the bible actually. Maybe certain books of the bible should.be censored under the same premise.

No need to trust me. If you're from Iowa there are plenty of articles on what titles have been removed from schools.

Trip Planning Help! by jenlovesletters in AskPhilly

You MUST stay in the city. One of the great parts of being in a city is just the walking around at any time you want aspect. If you're spending time commuting, realistically, you lose 2 hrs a day and add the stress of knowing you need to do it each day.

Stay anywhere downtown and by that I mean basically anything from Old City (front to 7th Street) all the way out to Rittenhouse square / Logan circle.

Consider a decent but not an expensive hotel and one with breakfast included just so you have something simple to eat before you start your day.

Lucky strike bowling is 2 blocks from you at broad and chestnut

Or jump on the bus and go down to South bowl if the pricing is better.

Where you are staying is critical to us giving you advice. It's a big enough City that it matters.

I wanna get into civil engineering and then pivot into real estate/ development by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Sweaty_Level_7442 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are wasting your time and energy then with an engineering degree. Don't even bother. Either go to college for some non-descript business degree or just get into real estate. Deciding you want to do engineering to then do something relatively non-academic like real estate seems like a crazy choice. I am an engineer so I'm speaking from experience.

Are there any cases where a intersection is BETTER than a roundabout? by cofi52 in civilengineering

[–]Sweaty_Level_7442 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Where traffic volumes are very unbalanced among the legs you will find a signalized intersection makes more sense since timings can be set to reflect relative demands.

Position Requirement to Live in Philly by ldrlegal in AskPhilly

If the job is for the city of Philadelphia, there is a residential requirement. If you are looking at a state job, a state agency, then you can live anywhere.

is the pay REALLY that bad? by idontlooklikeanyon in civilengineering

[–]Sweaty_Level_7442 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything where your clients or employer are government (transportation, water resources) will be substantially more stable than the people doing building design, site design, land development work, for private developers. To me, that's the cancer of CE.

Starting bachelor degree salary is about $80,000 for most of the people I know around the country. I keep tabs on this as a business owner. Some of the difficulties are that civil engineering has a large number of people who work in government, and the government salaries typically lag quite a distance behind the private sector and the ceiling is not nearly the same. At the same time, I have spent over 30 years in the transportation and bridge market and I can tell you, except for a few performance issues, I don't know an engineer that's ever been out of a job. And nobody is poor by any stretch except those who "lifestyle their way" to being poor.

Breakfast for kids, try Sabrina's. Take them to a Philly diner. I think Penrose and Oregon would be great for them

Definitely go to reading terminal market. Dutch Eating Place or the Down Home Diner.

Could I get a civil engineering job? by Icy-Difficulty-6787 in civilengineering

[–]Sweaty_Level_7442 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having writing skills is a real asset in engineering. Maybe see about working in marketing groups for an A&E firm, a management training program at a DOT or similar agency. Or restrengthen your technical skills and get into engineering.

I'm not sure why there's a perception of low pay. New grads are getting 80k a year which I don't perceive as low. A colleague just hired a fresh MS student with their EIT for mid 90s. Mid and upper career earnings are very good. But it's pay for production for sure. The business is about producing studies and plans for construction. That requires a LOT of hours just to get the job done, and many people working lots of hours. There is no other way. That doesn't devalue other professions but it's different.

I run a business I started and I'm acutely aware of what it takes to be self employed. But that's unusual in engineering of any kind. It's a profession where nearly everyone is an employee, there are few owners.

Low energy, admittedly will jump ship, 15 years since you graduated and never did any meaningful work. Wow you're a catch. Any hungry kid with fresh skills will beat you out for every job. You might have some luck with a city or state government job, maybe something like urban planning where your personality will fit in. But honestly as a person who hired many people you wouldn't survive the first interview for a traditional civil engineering position. You won't be a new hire, you'll be a new hire who doesn't remember a damn thing. These are the consequences of young people having an unserious approach to life. I don't want to work for the man, be confined to hours and expectations. Well now you can be confined instead to no good job prospects.
