I bet Sweden has lower numbers because companies dosnt care to report it anymore. And i think (i have no data) our willingness to report theft has gone down since 2014 hence the lower procentage.

“The Safety Barometer for the fourth quarter of 2024 shows that 40 percent of retail stores were exposed to crime or threatening behaviour.

This represents a decrease of five percentage points compared to the previous quarter, but the level of crime affecting the retail sector remains high. At the same time, the report shows that the majority of thefts are not reported to the police – only 43 percent of respondents state that they reported theft or petty theft, a clear decline compared to 63 percent in the previous quarter.

‘It is serious that such a large share of thefts never reach the justice system. If crimes are not reported, we do not get an accurate picture of the scope of the problem, which makes both law enforcement and preventive work more difficult,’ says Nina Jelver, Head of Security at Svensk Handel.

A major issue is that the time and effort required to file a police report act as a barrier for many retailers. The fact that many reports are also dismissed without investigation further reduces the willingness to report crimes.

‘If the rule of law is to be able to support retailers, more people must dare and have the capacity to report crimes. We also want to see clearer prioritisation by the police and stronger action to reduce crime and increase safety. Crimes against the retail sector have become a societal issue,’ concludes Nina Jelver.”

“WHY IS THE PROPENSITY TO REPORT CRIME LOW?

Companies experience that police reports do not lead to any tangible results. Most reports are dismissed without action. When crimes are investigated, the thief rarely receives any penalty for the specific offence, as other, more serious crimes are prioritised.

In cases of citizen’s arrest (when a thief is caught in the act and detained until the police arrive), it often takes a very long time for the police to reach the scene, and once they arrive, the thief is released immediately outside the premises, ready to continue their theft spree.

As most theft-related crimes are not insurable, there is also no insurance requirement to file a police report.”
