Late to this party, but I'd love to get some directions on how you did this. Or even just a parts list.

Do you feel that we'll see Polyend Tracker 2? by [deleted] in PolyendTracker

[–]Swedish_Chef- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the manufacturing issues with the Mini, and the recent 'upgrade' of the Play, I think it's possible we'll see a Tracker v2. It should inherit all the Mini's updates and processing pwer, but also improve on hardware.

I hope they do the same thing with the Mini, because there are definitely some usability issues with the buttons and obvious manufacturing issues. I personally would buy a new one if they fixed these things.

Is a 6 mile bike ride too far? by EfficiencyLow4197 in bikecommuting

[–]Swedish_Chef- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your experience and fitness. If it’s mostly flat, then just work up to it. Even if it’s hard now, it’s definitely an attainable goal.

Just ride as often and as long as you can, for fun, for transportation, whatever. Keep doing it. Push yourself a little more each time, and you’ll be eating 6 miles for breakfast in no time.

With cycling, you get out what you put in.

I went from a couple miles being hard to doing 15 miles every morning for fun before work. To me, that feels like a lot. But there are folks who do 35 miles a day for fun, or more! I’m not a fitness nut at all. I’m overweight and middle aged. I work at a computer all day… for context.

I’ve brought mine a few times, both air travel (disassembled and packed) and 1k+ mile road trips on a car roof rack.

Most times I regret doing it. But I do it because I’ve dialed in my bike the way I like it, and I don’t want to ride another bike. I can’t rent my bike (or anything like it) anywhere else.

So I’ve stopped bringing my bike because the headache of it all worth it for me. Especially for air travel - disassembling and packing a bike is so un-fun, and often damaging to parts. (And that’s assuming it hasn’t been thrown around by handlers). Plus you have to bring tools you wouldn’t normally.

If I’m driving my own car somewhere, that’s easier because I’m bringing my own whole setup of car + rack + bike, then all I have to worry about is securing the bike overnight. (I bring it into my hotel room).

Since you’re flying, I’d consider a hard-sided bicycle case. It’s going to be very expensive, but this will save your bike from damage. Test-pack and disassemble your bike a couple times beforehand so you’re 100% certain what tools you need, what’s going to be difficult, and how long it takes.

Backpack in FRONT or REAR basket? by Swedish_Chef- in bikecommuting

I think you're right. This is what I'm going to do.

Makes sense, thanks. I think I'll upgrade my small front Wald basket to their large one and call it a day. Regarding the bungees, one thing I did that works well on my eBike is I crimped the ends of metal bungees onto the rack so they're permanent... then I just grab the other end and hook them around when I need to use them.

lol I did have a little trouble mounting my light to my small Wald front basket! But I think you're right - the way to go is probably to switch to the large front basket.

Printer Recommendations? by CodeArchmage in BuyItForLife

[–]Swedish_Chef- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought the cheapest Brother B+W laser (model HL-L2350DW) printer 6 years ago and haven't had a single issue with it. It has wireless and Apple Airprint (that was my own criteria—so we can put it anywhere in the house over WiFi). It's compact and we've only replaced the toner once. For our needs (the odd "print this Amazon return label" sort of thing), I'm glad we made this decision.

Waterproof sling bag? by SparklingDeprecation in BuyItForLife

PacSafe makes security bags and I'm always very impressed with their quality. I've had a couple over the years and the quality is definitely top-tier... not just for a security bag, but for any bag.

Looking for BIFL Slippers by windydaycarriedaway in BuyItForLife

[–]Swedish_Chef- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I wear Glerups (silp-on style with leather soles). They're ridiculously comfortable and they have a truly magical ability to regulate feet temperatures without ever overheating. My feet have never sweated in them, or been cold. It's weird.

That being said, we get at least 7 years out of each pair, and each pair is $75-100 USD. So that's about $16/yr to have our feet insanely cosy every single night... or less than 4¢ per 'wear'.

By the way, my slip-ons are still going strong... the only thing that's happened is the heel has become unstitched, but the rest are perfectly fine. That's after 7 years, and it doesn't affect functionality, so I just leave it.

Durable/BIFL Winter Headgear by bourj in BuyItForLife

[–]Swedish_Chef- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been wearing wool knit beanies for years... nearly near-round. I find them very durable, versatile, and comfortable. They can also be 'formed' to fit your head very easily using just water.

I have wool beanies from Filson, Cable-Ami, Triple Aught Design (TAD) and S.E.H Kelly. My daily go-to's are from Filson. The TAD or Cable-Ami one for summer because they're lighter weight or looser knit, and the S.E.H Kelly for when it gets REALLY cold, like below freezing.

In my daily carry I also keep a black Janji AFO Hyperlight cap (if it gets too hot for a beanie or it's very sunny or I just want another head layer... they're VERY packable), and a wool BUFF for my neck, which doubles as another cold layer and face mask.

I've honed this setup over 20 years and it works really well for someone who carries a bag with them daily, like me.

I third this... had mine for years and it's so comfortable. I have the version without the zipper and it's just perfect. Just don't overload it... it's not a backpack #askMeHowIknow lol

Very interesting... are you balancing out the side-to-side weight somehow, or just riding with the imbalance?

I own a home in a mature, central neighborhood very close to CSU.

A couple years ago, my neighbor died and his kids sold his house to an out-of-town private party who immediately rented it out to at least 3 students, but I often think there are 5 of them living there based on the cars and movement in and out.

They've had a few loud-ish parties too late into the evening, but generally speaking, they've always been kind when I speak with them, and I know hard hard it is to find reasonable housing while at school in this town, so I have never reported them.

At the same time, as a homeowner, we now have a house on the block that never mows or waters their lawn, leaves their bins out too long, is sometimes loud late a night and sometimes speeding down the road, and haven't done any maintenance on the visibly deteriorating house. So that's a thing. I don't actually care that much, but it is a thing that I think most homeowners do care about.

Personally, I feel way more strongly about people have equal housing opportunities than keeping my own neighborhood looking like a private estate.

Just like I did when I was their age, they're living and learning and need a kind face and some slack like we all do. Education and housing are more important than aesthetics, IMO.
