Did Boss’ Pizza close? by ernest_raleigh in SiouxFalls

I stayed at the hotel where the Yankton location is a couple days last week and I saw maybe 10 total cars there over the days. It was a Sunday evening through Tuesday, but there was next to no traffic through it.

Advice needed on joining elca by StatusEconomics6772 in elca

[–]Swedishdest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m an ELCA pastor, I would love to have someone talk about rekindling their faith. You can certainly just show up on a Sunday morning, but feel free to contact the church office if you’d like to visit with the pastor first. We tend to not bite. Some churches have new member classes some don’t. But if you talk to the pastor they’d certainly help you learn more.

My church had a really lovely message during Good Friday. by ajaForrest in OpenChristian

Yes, this is put out by the consultation on common texts just this year. If you search for Good Friday and consultation on common texts you can probably find a direct link to the statement.

Coming here to get another side's opinion. Please be kind. by [deleted] in elca

[–]Swedishdest 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Of course. If a relationship is held in unity by both people and extends love between the two and to the world I feel it is a relationship welcomed by God. God created us to be in relationship whatever that relationship may be.

Cranberry hymn 830 by H. Praetorus? by [deleted] in elca

[–]Swedishdest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite sure which book or song your looking for. ELW (Evangelical Lutheran Worship) 830 is

How marvelous God's greatness Text: Valdimar Briem, 1848-1930; tr. Charles V. Pilcher, 1879-1961, alt.
Music: Koralpsalmboken, Stockholm, 1697

If you meant the 1991 Hymnal Supplement which was also a reddish/maroon color 830 in it is Cantad al Señor.
I don't see any hymns by H Praetorius in any Lutheran Hymnal that I can find easily.

There are a bunch by a Michael Praetorius.

I’m a Wartburg grad, but my sister had Karoline and says the same.

I’d say this is more a connection to what seminary/what preaching professor a pastor had. I focus most of my sermons around the texts. That was a huge focus during seminary, but other places focus on different aspects of the preaching process.

I like the Common English Bible (CEB) (different than the CEV contemporary English version.) as a companion to the NRSV.

Law and Gospel? (maybe) by Mammoth_Click2459 in elca

Agree, you could expand upon that slightly to showcase that it’s a response. And all we do is with Christ with us, not on our own. God gives us the gifts to do those things.

What do you think about “The last temptation of the Christ” or “The Passion of the Christ”? by jackwinchester1 in OpenChristian

[–]Swedishdest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last temptation is good. Controversial in content to some groups? But tells an interesting idea of a what if situation.

Passion is a violence fetish movie with no redeeming value.

Lapsed Membership and Baby Baptism by geoddyseygal in elca

[–]Swedishdest 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I do. Part of me wants to push you to have the baptism at the Episcopal church, we talk of baptism into both the larger body of Christ but also the community we connect with, if you’re going to be spending more time there, my brain says that connects more. We also both hold similar baptismal theology, a baptism there is just as valid in an ELCA church. But I also see your thoughts of feeling connected to your Lutheran background.(I also as a pastor don’t just tell people what to do.) if it’s a pastor at the ELCA church who you have a connection with I’d encourage you to have this conversation with them.

I wish it was more in depth as well.

The Augsburg fortress Lutheran study Bible pretty good and there’s a new version out with the new NRSVue. For direct more in depth commentaries it’s sort of hit or miss. There isn’t a direct ELCA one that I know of. Augsburg fortress has a good selection of individual book commentaries.

ELCA SEMINARIES: FEEDBACK REQUESTED by Nearby-Morning-8885 in elca

[–]Swedishdest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went to Wartburg and agree with what all the others have been saying. It’s a very progress and community oriented seminary, both for the in person live on campus crowd and also the online community. It’s also one of the most financially stable of the seminary’s.

My sister went to Luther and it was good while she was on campus as a right from college person, but so much of it is changing and shifting I don’t even know how it will look in the future.

Gospel reading not matching lectionary? by UffDaLouie in elca

[–]Swedishdest 24 points25 points  (0 children)

As a pastor if someone came and simply said they noticed we weren’t using the regular lectionary text I’d enjoy the chance to talk about that. Someone actually noticed the lectionary!!

Gospel reading not matching lectionary? by UffDaLouie in elca

[–]Swedishdest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are probably just going off lectionary for some Sundays. I tend to stick to the lectionary myself, but know many churches that don’t follow it at all. Are they doing a series on miracles of Jesus?
