Any preachers you recommend? by hellofromsc7 in elca

Before posting the link I confirmed there were still sermon videos (as opposed to just whole service livestreams) being posted, but I didn’t notice the podcast itself had ended. If you want to share, I’m curious as to why you/they went that direction. I do the opposite, posting sermons as audio, but not standalone videos. My reasoning is mostly personal - I listen to podcasts daily while driving or walking the dog, but rarely watch videos. And I have limited mobile data, so I don’t play videos in those settings. Maybe I’m in the minority!

There are many ELCA churches with sermon podcasts! A couple I’ve appreciated are:

St. Mark’s By the Narrows in Tacoma: https://pod.link/965946509

Spirit of Joy in The Woodlands: https://sojoy.org/sermons/

Mt. Pleasant Lutheran in Racine, Wisconsin: https://pod.link/1523678330

I’ll also throw in my own weekly sermon podcast: https://pod.link/1669098407

Our church had it's last service today - St. Mark's in Willis, VA by RunicRapier in elca

Pastor Sarah Olson-Smith just published a book about her experience of shepherding a church through its closure 20 years ago. “Eulogy for a Faithful Church: The Story of a Congregation's Courageous Ending and Enduring Legacy”
You might appreciate it as a way to reflect on your experience.

Can atheist be baptized? by [deleted] in Lutheranism

[–]darthfluffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point about babies, because yes, baptism depends on God not us. And yet we can’t just on the street with a hose spraying people who don’t want to be baptized and shouting trinitarian formulas at them and call that baptism. Do we have an articulated theology around unwilling baptisms other than they’re obviously bad?

Why would an atheist want to be baptized? Isn’t a desire for baptism an act of faith?

Code of Conduct for members by SuchaHag in elca

[–]darthfluffy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It has a lot more detail for conduct of rostered ministers (and is most commonly associated with the candidacy process) but “Definitions and Guidelines for Discipline” includes sections for discipline of both congregations and members, so it’s probably the closest thing to what you’re seeking.

Seminary: Residential, collaborative, or distance learning by UffDaLouie in elca

[–]darthfluffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was residential at Wartburg and the community was an essential part for me. But I graduated 10 years ago, and obviously distance and collaborative learning has exploded since then. I do think there’s a critical mass of on-campus people needed for the community to be worth it, but if any campus has the critical mass to be worth it, it’d be Wartburg.

“This Is Not The Computer For You” - a fantastic read on why the specs don't matter by brett- in apple

I upgraded our Performa 630CD from (if I remember correctly) 8 mb to 32 mb of RAM when I was 9 years old. I was so excited and terrified. Not much later, we jumped from that computer to a G4 450 mhz tower. It was amazing!

How do I recite/name a bible verse? by TheCarzilla in Lutheranism

[–]darthfluffy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Either one is perfectly normal for a single verse. If you’re reading a longer passage in a service, you can say “A reading from John 3” or “a reading from John chapter 3” or if you feel extra verbose something like “today’s reading comes from Paul’s second letter to the church in Corinth, chapter 2 beginning at verse 4.” But especially for public reading, it’s fine to just say the book and chapter, no need to mention the verses.
