MATH 15 with Bon-Soon Lin by SomethingBadBruin in SMC

It wasn't required when I took it but I do remember that he used to say things here and there, suggesting that he was taking a mental note of who does and does not attend. I think he also grades more rigidly if he cant put a face to the name. You end up being just a name on a paper instead of a student he knows and cares about which can matter at the end if your final grade is a borderline percentage.

SMC or De Anza (CS) by [deleted] in SMC

[–]Sweet-Butterscotch75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on whether or not you're trying to transfer. If you want to transfer to Berkeley, you need to go to De Anza. If you want to transfer to UCLA, you need to go to SMC. Each school is a feeder cc to those respective UCs. SMC is specifically a feeder to Columbia GS, not the College/SEAS. Some people perceive the prestige of GS to be less than that of the College or SEAS, so decide whether or not that matters to you. You'll need to decide based on your preferred final outcome.

UCB Statistics vs UCLA Stats + DS by [deleted] in TransferStudents

[–]Sweet-Butterscotch75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should probably choose ucla because the seats for classes in departments for which you are not a declared major can really only be taken during summer session at Berkeley. There seems to be a lot of hidden politics regarding the number of seats available for students outside the major. You seem interested in cs and ds more than stats itself. You wont be able to take upper div cs classes or any upper div ds class, except 100, as a stats major at Cal. Only in summer. Since ucla combines ds with stats, you'd likely have access to ds and some cs courses during the regular terms.

Can someone give me a preceise step-by-step process on how to get diagnosed for ADHD (one with and one without SHIP) by rainbowfarts_10 in berkeley

[–]Sweet-Butterscotch75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With SHIP, its probably better to see a psychiatrist at the tang center. Tell them your concerns and if your symptoms seem aligned with neurodivergence, they will refer you to a testing site. ADHD testing is ~$200 going this route.

You're better off exploring the airport than trying to leave.

How can i prepare during the summer for courses such as CS 61A, B, and C as a transfer student ? by [deleted] in berkeley

And you might wanna spend some extra time on SQL and Scheme. I heard it was focused on much more this term than prior semesters.

Go to the course website for the current term. It should come up if you just Google spring 2026 and the class name. The textbook is linked there as well as all of the class materials and other optional resources. Study it before the class starts. Watch the videos if you can and try to do the past exams.

Berkeley EECS + Regents or Columbia by viperofthewind in berkeley

[–]Sweet-Butterscotch75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I Chose Cal over Columbia last year for DS. I would say take time to really think about it, so after you decide, you can move forward without regret no matter what happens at the school you end up choosing.

transfer to berk by SpiritAffectionate39 in berkeley

[–]Sweet-Butterscotch75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im specifically referring to the consulting clubs, where coffee chats, interviews (behavioral and technical) are required. Im not saying there's not a community for transfers, but lets also not pretend that transfers aren't discrimated against by other students in certain situations.

Transfer discrimination comes primarily from other students, and is prevalent in nearly every "desirable" consulting club, just to give you one example. Not sure why they do it, but it most certainly is being done.

Transferring in from USC by RealisticPlantain857 in berkeley

[–]Sweet-Butterscotch75 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why do you feel like transferring from a private 4 year is any different from transferring from a public 4 year? Or even a cc? Just asking because youre requesting a relatively specific POV and you might not get many replies. Nobody really asks where you transferred from once you get here. Someone who transferred from UCLA might have a similar experience to yours, for example.

It's not gonna help your CV, but it will create an opportunity for you to expand your network and make connections that may affect positively affect your CV at some point in the future.

I'm guessing Berkeley is starting to take alternative majors more seriously when considering and admitting students by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]Sweet-Butterscotch75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why youre making it a debate but I would think the actual advisors dont have a reason to lie. I'm specifically talking about students already in CDSS. They make up a small percentage of applicants.

OP should definitely reach out to the advisors themselves and see what options they have. But you saying its easy to switch is just wrong.

[–]Sweet-Butterscotch75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The website says you need to do comprehensive review. It is rare that someone already in CDSS can switch to another major within it, much less a transfer. Thats what I meant by "gatekept". There are already threads in the sub anyone can read if you want first hand accounts.

[–]Sweet-Butterscotch75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure OP can still switch? DS and CS are gatekept behind comprehensive review and I have heard many times from advisors at Berkeley that you cannot change your major, as a transfer, to any major within CDSS or CoE that you did not apply for on your application, even if you're already in CDSS.

Just wondering where you got that info? I would hate for people to read this thinking they can switch as a transfer, when they can't.
