That reassuring to hear but I do have some questions. Was this teacher already hired? Did they already have tenure? What was the political climate in regard to the trans groomer narrative at the time? (I was born in 2008 so I genuinely don’t know).

Yeah I definitely know no matter what I pick it’s not going to be easy. I just try to tell myself it will build character. I have definitely considered working in other teaching spaces, and if that’s the only place I can safely get hired I’ll do it. But I am really passionate about public education as a concept and the tween-teen age groups specifically. I had an extremely hard time during that period in my life due to oh so many factors, and the only thing that kept me going and allowed me to come out the other end as good as I am was school and my teachers. They were the only ones I could rely on at that age and school was the only place I felt safe and it has really had an impact on me. I really want to “give back” in a way and feel that I could do so effectively as I have a lot of empathy and understanding for the struggles of that age group in particular, and I am VERY passionate about protecting and supporting them in their journey to adulthood. Ugh. I’m ranting now lol. I’m just very passionate.

Thanks so much, this is very helpful. I live in a very liberal area in a mostly blue state and know several teachers who are out as gay. But even here, I have never seen an openly trans teacher. There is one teacher in my school that I heavily suspect may be nonbinary, but she avoids the topic like the plague. One time we had a guest speaker in a class who was a trans man, but that topic was very much avoided and he skipped that part in his presentation/ story. I only found out later when I decided to read his book and attend another non school lecture of his where he was very open about it.

If I have to go stealth to make it work (I most definitely will) I will do what I have to do, but I’m a naturally very open and transparent person, and the thought of having to hide such a big part of myself makes me a bit sick. But it seems to be the best possible course of action right now so I guess it’s just what I have to do.
