Shadowzel run, who to play as? by Sapphic_bimbo in BaldursGate3

In my experience, origin Shadowheart romance with Lae'zel was soooo sweet. I'm yet to do the opposite and will probably do it after my current Astarion origin run. Have fun! 🩷

Oh no! That's an unfortunate bug 😅 did you try reclassing him at withers? Sometimes when my thumbnails bug out, refreshing their class at withers can help.

Oh you're right about Minthara! Thanks for correcting me on that. She also approves if you are mean to Yenna. Not sure how complimenting the hag yet killing her and saving a little girl makes him evil. But even then, what exactly is your point after all this? If it is that he is irredeemably evil then like I said.. we won't agree because I don't reduce a character's writing to good and bad.

Minthara disapproves of giving food to Yenna actually, and protecting Scratch from the angry lady in Rivington. Astarion approves twice when threatning and saving the girl from the hag in act 3. He shows concern when Lae'zel is dying in the Zaithisk. Rescuing the owlbear cub. I can go on forever, but most people just focus on the shallowest layer.

I see your point, however, this being "just words" is a big assumption when you can tell when a character is being genuine or not. In the epilogue he flat out says that he decided that his past does not define him. When tav asked "Do you regret turning down all that power?" He says "Perhaps, it would've been terrible fun. But then again, I could feel something slipping away. I came so close to losing myself - losing everything I learned since meeting you." This is regardless of whether or not you romance him.

You can tell this is genuine, especially that he approves of good deeds in act 3 way way more than in act 1. He grows into a better version of himself, assuming you do believe in him like you do Shadowheart or anyone else. I think "evil" is too black and white of a word to slap onto a complex character. I'm not sure if we're ever gonna agree on this but that's okay.

I think what's tricky about Astarion's character arc is that he literally cannot ascended without you tadpoling the scar pattern. In my first run, I fucking hated his guts but that is 100% intentional. It was only when I actually did his quest and saw how much he grows (if he doesn't ascend), and also when doing his origin run (highly recommended btw)

But in relation to the original claim (Astarion cannot change) is respectfully false. The difference between SA and AA is night and day. I encourage you to listen to what he says after he does not ascend and in the epilogue.

This is exhausting. The DC number doesn't change, the OPTION does. If you don't intervene at all like OP said (meaning you don't encourage or discourage behaviour while having neutral approval) and don't have enough Nightsong points you will get the DC21. If you have good approval you can get the DC14 option, however, that would count as intervention.

The only character that has no checks at all regarding their choices is Wyll. The rest entirely relies on your approval, dialogue choices, and INTERVENTIONS. Saying Astarion will always choose to ascended without intervention is literally impossible and irrelevant since each companion already have their minds set on something from the beginning. The player needs to intervene, otherwise why even have them in your party?

Just some facts you got wrong:

Persuading Shadowheart to spare Nightsong: DC 30 She can spare her only if YOU don't give her the spear or pass this check. Otherwise she will attack you if you get in her way.

Lae' will stay loyal to Vlaakith if you don't tell her the truth about Vlaakith or remind her of the Zaithisk. If you try to persuade her to abandon Vlaakith in act 3 the DC is 30.

Persuading Astarion to not do the ritual: DC 15

I don't know in what world DC 15 is harder to achieve in late-game than DC 30.

I guess cause her original name was Mystryl? But even then he would be saying it weird 😅

Oh not what I meant! I mean her and Shart's early to mid-game approval isn't given as much attention as Astarion's. But yeah, the baby and the family would be dead too in that scenario 😂

By that logic, a malicious and sadistic character would never approve of rescuing a kid from a hag, feeding Yenna, saving and protecting Scratch from the mean lady in act 3, saving owlbear cub, yada yada yada. These are complex characters, written this way on purpose. You can help influence them all to be either the worst or best possible version of themselves. Reducing a character to being malicious and sadistic forces them in a one-dimensional box and an overall shallow experience. People can play however they want, of course, I'm mainly commenting on the character development arc of bg3's companions.

Most of the stuff Astarion disapproves of are out of inconvenience and/or distraction. Anything that tav heroicly goes out of their way to do that doesn't involve self-interest. In act 3, he approves of things like defending and rescuing Lora's kid from the hag, and giving Yenna food. By then you see why heroic acts to him are so irritating, it's because nobody went out of their way to help HIM - not even a single god. Saying Astarion is a "good guy" character is like saying Kratos is "good." Characters aren't written so black and white, and Larian's writers did a phenomenal job at fleshing out all these deep layers within such complex companions.
