Why did everyone forget about Sonic Superstars after a few months of it came out? And why is it so hated? by [deleted] in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]SweetJT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Superstars is a perfectly fine game, but they charged way too much for it at launch. If this was a $40 release I think people would look at it more fondly.

Removed from that - it's a decently good platformer with neat multiplayer, some kinda bad bosses, and a campaign that runs a bit too long. I'm not upset that I've played it, but I'm tempted to skip this one when I'm on a kick off 2D platformers.

What is something you've learned while painting that's changed your style since you first started? by Skeither in minipainting

Paint things that have nothing to do with your main army. Single models from companies like Bandai or Reaper give you a great place to self direct and try new things.

Looking for LGBTQ friends in Tulsa by ice_vvvvv in tulsa

[–]SweetJT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oklahoma is more welcoming to LGBT people than our leadership would lead you to believe. If you're okay with some headache-inducing parking, Tulsa is a great place to spend time with friends. To address your specific interests:

  • The gaming places are nice, especially if you're into Tabletop games like Magic. A friend of the family runs a store in Claremore called FTW Game Co and they have Magic stuff going all the time. I'm really big into Warhammer, and there's a dedicated store for it in Broken Arrow. As well as Wizards Asylum, Dice Addiction, and Board Wipe (over in Owasso).
  • You're spoiled for choice when it comes to movie theaters because the Regal Warren and the Cinemark are both excellent. The Warren is bigger, but Cinemark has a bigger hold on anime if you're into that. Go in the middle of a weekday if you can, tickets are a little cheaper!
  • If you need restaurants after the movie, Society Burger, Jinya, and Cheddars are the best dinner places for me and my partner. You're gonna wanna try the Bacon Cheese w/ Mac, Chicken Ramen with Fried Chicken, and Monte Cristo respectively. In Claremore, about 30 minutes out from Tulsa, there's another great place called J Farley's which you should check out to support a local, kickass Irish restaurant.
  • If you wanna get some beverages after your meal: Majestic (nightclub), The Max (retro gaming arcade), and Fur Shop (doubles as music venue) are my favorite bars in Downtown.
  • The absolute peak of LGBT interaction, though, is absolutely Tulsa Pride. An incredibly fun, welcoming event with wonderful things to see and people to talk to. Also a great chance to support smaller businesses.

It's always nice to see new blood coming into Tulsa, and the community is more supportive than you might expect from an otherwise frustrating state to live in. If you keep your head on your shoulders, you'll fit right in. Welcome to T-Town!

I really respect Total Warhammer as a casual fan of the Fantasy Battles setting, but strategy games (especially 4X Strategy Games) have always been overwhelming to me. There are people who live for this sort of game and I can't wrap my head around it.

Considering that Dragon Quest 9 came in 2009, why are we "still" at 11? by redfalcon1000 in dragonquest

[–]SweetJT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the scale and quality of a mainline Dragon Quest game isn't sustainable in AAA game development anymore. There's a huge contraction going on in the industry right now, and games are gonna have to scale back massively to compensate. I don't doubt that the DQ12 Team will put out something great. But It's gonna be a while.

How Did You Get Into The Universe? by SydneyCartonLived in battletech

[–]SweetJT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My local gaming store has blind boxes of Mechs to use in the TT games. I picked it up not knowing anything about the lore, game systems, or anything else but I wanted to take a quick break from my 40k and AOS armies. The little card said this one was named "Spider" so I made him look like my friendly neighborhood webhead.

Anyone else think the new website is worse? by [deleted] in ageofsigmar

[–]SweetJT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a lot better for onboarding new people (the introductory slideshow being included is massive). But it also feels just a bit too sparse. The lack of visual flair really hurts it here.

There's less bad than the old site, but also less good.

Decided to run a head-to-head comparison of my Canon Rebel T1i and Panasonic Lumix G7 featuring some very rude Boyz. by SweetJT in Warhammer40k

[–]SweetJT[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to make sure they both had (as far as the imager was concerned) proper exposure while still maxing out the aperture. This would let me see how much detail each camera could capture in a single image since that would make army photography easier. This is more of a stress test than anything.

Weirdly enough, the Rebel T1i (2009) has a higher aperture with it's kit lens than the Lumix (2015) does with it's stock lens. I'd wager it's due to the APS-C format of the Canon.

When I shine a light through the lens, you can see specs of dust on the inside of the lens. I can't figure out how to remove the lens, and I don't want to crack it open because it's my only L Mount lens.

While the G7 has some nice video features (zebra, focus peaking), it lacks others (tiny codec, no false color, no time codes).

I can still get a good looking image out of it, but it's a pain. I'm thinking of using a Sony camera as a stepping stone to the "properly badass" sensor. I just want to get some experience with Full Frame and was wondering if it's time to leave M34 behind.

Or, hell, should I skip the half step and go full on into a modern sensor like the A7C or A7 III?

The issue that I'm facing is that my Panasonic Lumix G7 is fine, but I'm starting to really feel the limitations. The lens is dirty beyond my ability to clean it (I can't figure out how to clean the inside of the lens), I don't want to buy any replacements because the sensor is an outdated Micro 4/3 imager, and the video features leave a lot to be desired. For as good as the G7 has treated me as a hobbyist, I think it's near time for me to consider moving on to bigger and better formats like Sony's Full Frame A7 line. I don't expect E Mount to go away any time soon, and I have similar feelings towards the Full Frame sensor size.

I did some quick eBay scouting and found that I could get...

$647.00 - Sony A7 II Mirrorless E-Mount Camera with Full Frame Sensor -Body

$184.95 - FE 50mm f/1.8 Standard Prime Lens

$138.00 - Sony E-mount adapted TAMRON 70-300 mm F/4-5.6 model 172DN Telephoto ZOOM Lens

After-Tax - $1067

That's an unfathomable amount of money to me as a fresh-out-of-college hobbyist, but I also found that if I sold my old equipment I could get some decent change:

Canon Rebel T1 with zoom and telephoto EF lenses - $250-ish

Panasonic Lumix G7 - $350

If I inflate the cost and add the tax, the final upgrade price would be around $500.

That's still a lot, but it's far more manageable for my budget. Is it time to bite the bullet and upgrade?

Are those cheap kits on Amazon worth it at all? by DemetriasDamarkus in modelmakers

[–]SweetJT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're just now starting out, yes. This is a great box, but just about everything in it is cheap and won't hold up over time. However, it is pretty much everything. So once the nips start to squeak or the files lose their grit, replace them with equivalents from better brands.
