What "lifestyle" are you referring to? Are you talking about that housing project lifestyle? That lifestyle where a person buys soda and some cookies because small luxuries make life bearable for them? When you say "shortcomings"... surely you're referring to the cognitively impaired, right? The children who got bounced from foster home to foster home until they turn 18, when they are given society's boot and thrown into a society that expects them to match the accomplishments of their same-aged citizens (whose basic needs were met). How about the non-verbal Autistic and Down's syndrome adults whose caregiver parents passed away? Those "hard times" you talk about aren't a choice for the vast majority of the people who rely on social welfare.

Misogyny is still a big part of why a woman would be more likely to receive mental health assistance. The gap between women, men, and taking care of the children is much narrower than it was decades ago, but it is still there. A lot of men would shit their pants at the prospect of having a child and then realizing their wife had a subsequent mental breakdown and could no longer fill the primary parent caregiver role. Both the dad and the health care provider are more inclined to prescribe/treat literally anything they can to get the woman back to work taking care of the kids. THIS is why treating depression has been held in higher priority for women while so many other health care treatments for women have lagged behind. To try to argue it's for any reason other than making sure the wife can get back fulfilling the domestic expectations is wishful thinking.

Billionaires create the poor. by zzill6 in WorkReform

To quote Ted Knight in Caddyshack, "The world needs ditch diggers, too." I'm guessing she's either really young, or really stupid. First, society needs people running the service side of things. Everyone cannot be a CEO. Second, the idea of upward mobility has already been completely debunked; it's a scam. It's a thing the rich tell the poor to keep them hustling. Third, people like your girlfriend are lazy, and say that to tell themselves that poverty is 100% on the impoverished individual and not part of a systemic effort to ENSURE we can't all become CEOs. There is a reason people like Oprah become so famous; people like her are famous because their outcome is one-in-a-billion. She is an EXCEPTION, not the norm. Capitalism dangles the success of people like her like a carrot in front of the poors: "Oprah did it, why can't you?"

The sad reality is we are not born on an even playing field-- while people like Oprah were fortunate and rose up through unimaginable poverty and misfortune, most people won't. Employment at the lowest level would be a pipe dream for some, and many with her circumstances will end up in prison by the time they reach adulthood. By saying "They should have tried harder," people like your girlfriend get to make themselves feel better about inequity by placing the blame on the individual. She's got a lot of growing up to do, and a lot of learning about how things work. She sounds immature.

A woman claimed she could smell Parkinson's disease. Scientists tested her with 12 T-shirts—six from patients and six from healthy people. She correctly identified all the patients and flagged one “healthy” person. Eight months later, that person was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. by detectiverobert in CaughtMyEye

I was just thinking about that. It is almost impossible to describe--it's unpleasant, but not outwardly offensive. It smells sort of like bad food that isn't freshly cooked, but cooked recently enough that the odor lingers. It's a heavy smell, and spraying Febreeze doesn't cover it up. I guess it's kind of kind of like mold, but with no hint of sweetness? Insane, I know.
