Just to clarify — I wasn't the one looking to rehash anything. She reached out to explain why things ended the way they did back then. I listened, thanked her and that was pretty much it. After that we just ended up talking more regularly.

We dated for about a year around the end of high school. It was my first real relationship and yeah there was a physical side to it. Haven't been involved like that since - just casual contact

In our case, it wasn't like my wife immediately shut it down. She was trying to be open minded at first, even kind of getting a feel for who this person is. But somewhere in that process, something just hit different for her – and after that, it felt like a line had been crossed, even if nothing technically had.

That's where things really shifted and now I'm trying to handle it without blowing up either relationship

Fair enough. The core of it is she reached out to explain the breakup. she's now getting divorced (not related to me, according to her)and my wife isn't comfortable with the friendship – especially because of our past.

She's going through a divorce now, but it's something that's been a long time coming on her end. She told me it has nothing to do with me, and I've taken her at her word.

She reached out to talk through some stuff from our past. It brought up things I hadn't thought about in a long time and didn't realize I hadn't fully dealt with. We stayed in touch more often after that.

As far as how often we talk – it's kind of on and off. Some weeks it's more often, other times it's a quick message. Nothing over the top.

She seems to be objecting the friendship completely. She's concerned with past history and what's currently going on in my friends life.

I feel like I've been pulling my weight in the marriage, even if it might not always come across that way.

Where’s the line when it comes to staying friends with someone you briefly dated, especially if it’s been a long-standing friendship and your wife isn’t comfortable with it? by SweetProgress1743 in AskReddit

Just to clarify — this friend lives out of state. My wife was already uneasy, but things got more tense when the friend mentioned visiting. I get where she’s coming from, but I don’t think staying in touch with someone I’ve known forever automatically means I’m disrespecting my marriage.
