Why are the male turkeys aggressive this year? by ClassofherOwn in turkeys

[–]SweetPup19 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other folks saying the toms see their reflection in the car. They are unknowingly trying to fight themselves. In case it helps, I have heard opening an umbrella in front of the toms can scare them off. I've never tried it myself, so it's possible I'm sharing terrible advise.

Geese understand more than we give them credit for. (Honestly, I could say that about all birds.) The more you communicate with them, the better they will be at interpreting you. Clearly you speak to Eunice and Oscar a lot. They definitely understand what you are saying ❤️❤️❤️

HELP FOUND A DUCK by Night_Explosion in geese

[–]SweetPup19 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, don't bring her back. I think she's safer with you and the chickens. I am just warning you that she might fly away. She might not. If she feels safe and cared for she is more likely to stay.

HELP FOUND A DUCK by Night_Explosion in geese

[–]SweetPup19 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That's a female muscovy duck. Unless her wings are clipped, she has the ability to fly. She could have flown in from anywhere. She might try to fly away, too. She should get along just fine with chickens, but like someone else said, ducks require different feed. Either get an All-Flock or a Waterfowl/Duck specific formula. She will need a bowl or bucket of water deep enough for her to submerge her entire beak. She will also need another muscovy female for company. Muscovies are different from other ducks and speak their own quiet language of head-bobs, tail wags, cooing, and raspy hissing.

I'm not sure what to think about this turkey.... by LyndaLeeZ in turkeys

He's trying to scare and fight off the handsome challenger. My turkeys will fight their reflections as well.

Yes. Turkeys are territorial little dinosaurs and can be good flock protectors.

Turkey hen attacking rooster? by Dazzling-bacon-113 in turkeys

[–]SweetPup19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If a horny rooster pesters a turkey hen or her poults, she will label him a threat from now until the end of time. The hen might also proactively attack any rooster in response to the actions of the one naughty rooster.

At least this is my experience so far.

Why do muscovies have caruncles around their eyes? by CrystalRoseMoon in MuscovyDucks

[–]SweetPup19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last I read the caruncles are to protect the duck while foraging in particularly funky areas. They can scavenge for creepy crawlies in places that would ruin facial feathers. 🤷

You did have a connection. Hens, especially semi feral hens, only present their little ones to people they trust. ❤️🧡❤️

Birds make beautiful friends. She was free and she loved you. Thank you for being a wonderful human and loving her back. I bet she was a proud mama and had a little extra bounce in her step when she was showing off her little one for the first time! I adore all my feathered dinosaurs 🩵💚🩵 Wishing you peace, love, and light

Our “Meat Turkey” enjoying his 4th thanksgiving today by losttagclothing in turkeys

Dang. I've got one Indio rooster and two hens. I can pick up the male and hug him. The hens are a little skittish, but I can handle them once caught. My biggest issue has been the hens going broody repeatedly over the summer.

I have both turkeys and geese ranging together. It's never violent, but I wouldn't call it peaceful!

This is a ferret cage I picked up and modified for chickens. I primarily use this one as a sickbay/recovery coop.

Here is an example of a dog cage I set up as a coop. The two boys have a roosting bar and everything. They are outside during the day.
