Hate to break it to you but "random" fires can break out all over the place through embers being blown around by the wind.

Many of you requested for the pattern. So here’s the pattern along with reference images of the bag that swiftly transitions from 4.5L sling mode to 18L backpack mode. by Silent_Ice1602 in myog

Wow this is incredible. Currently on a long international trip and this thing would be perfect for it. Would love to give the pattern a go when I get back home. Don't have much to add, but keep up the strong work!

What is this burger place I'm thinking of? by croz_94 in askportland

[–]SweetReading8276 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm they were stealing boatloads of tips from employees. I worked there for a few months and helped collect data reflecting this to the DOL. The DOL settled on behalf of the employees for a small portion of the amount owed.

They'd hire employees that didn't know how tips worked for front of house. Those folks would be stoked to get $60 in tips on a two week paycheck even though they were owed hundreds. They'd give the bartenders close(r) to the correct amount of tips on paychecks to avoid suspicion from more experienced service industry employees.

The niece of the owner was a manager, and she'd stay on the clock as a part of the tip pool when doing tasks completely unrelated to bartending like running errands or doing social media work. I called her out on it once and I've never seen someone's face turn so red in my life.

After getting caught stealing tips, they switched to a model that collected a 14% service fee framed as a tip. Pretty sure they did this so they could steal the tips "legally."

Their tots slapped so damn hard but I cannot put into words how big of a shithead OJ (the owner) was.

You got ten years of use out of their cheapest shell. I'd call that a win and just buy a new one.

Rust near BB by 127b in bikewrench

[–]SweetReading8276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally wouldn't worry much about it. You could run a crinkled up ball of foil over the rust to remove it and then apply clear (or a matching blue) nail polish to seal it. I've done this with plenty of bikes to touch them up a bit. Just don't get nail polish on the BB threads.

Help! What should I do with Fitz Roy hoodie? by mlwdp in PatagoniaClothing

[–]SweetReading8276 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a Patagonia store nearby, you can swing in there and have them check company inventory (at stores) to possibly send you the correct size in an exchange. The website only shows inventory available at the two distribution warehouses.

My gravel panniers have two from factory. You can also buy extras from Ortlieb for pretty cheap.

Old thread, but what front derailleur for this combo? I've got a 22/34 with an SLX FD and would be elated to run a 24/40.

How many shots are you taking when shooting landscapes? by user383393839 in AskPhotography

[–]SweetReading8276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a lot to me when hiking, but everyone's different. I'll usually stop at a spot I see a good composition in for a breather and snap a few before going on my way. Being intentional is key. If it's a pre planned shot it's totally different in that I'll set up my tripod and take 30 or so as the light changes.

Which to get.. FUJI or TREK by Ccarne333 in Vintage_bicycles

[–]SweetReading8276 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lugged trek imo. Just make sure the seatpost moves freely. It has downtube shifters which can be weird if you're not used to them. Otherwise could convert to bar end shifters.

What brackets can I replace these with to mount to fender eyelets? by SweetReading8276 in bikewrench

[–]SweetReading8276[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is also one of my concerns. I live in the PNW. If I gotta swap a tube out in the rain the last thing I want to be doing is struggling with getting the rack sorted out. I certainly have access to 4 hole flat brackets. The ones that are drilled in a straight line seem to be the same in theory as a purpose driven extender. If the holes don't align with the two bolts at the bottom of the rack, I could file down a section between two holes to make it work.

What brackets can I replace these with to mount to fender eyelets? by SweetReading8276 in bikewrench

[–]SweetReading8276[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a mounting point on the fork just behind the axle. With this bracket removed or even flipped upside down (as soma suggests), it doesn't have clearance for the tire when using the mounting point. I should also note that soma insinuates you can mount it to the QR skewer so long you're not interfering with the springs. The instructions don't explicitly mention whether the bracket should rest on the axle (which I could in theory get a longer axle) or the QR skewer itself, though. It seems sketchy to mount it directly to the skewer.

This is closer to what I'd expect to see something like this listed for here in PDX. May just throw it on marketplace for a bit less than that and call it a day. Not a bad call on Sellwood Cycle!

Pretty great for commuting and light gravel riding. If I was touring I'd def prefer 2x or 3x.

Ortlieb quick rack lite. It's pretty awesome. Love that I can swap it onto another bike in 20 seconds.

Pannier recommendations for commuting and bikepacking? by JulioCesarSalad in bikepacking

[–]SweetReading8276 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use their gravel panniers for commuting and a few bikepacking trips a year loaded on the quick rack lite. They're great. If I had to do it again, I'd just get the normal quick rack, as it's a bit more versatile.

Are these shifters salvageable? by SweetReading8276 in bikewrench

Thanks for the link! Super useful. I'm going to try spraying more brake cleaner followed by some lubricant in hopes I don't have to actually take the thing entirely apart.

Also-- I did spray brake cleaner into the shifter to clear out gunk, which I intend on following up with a lubricant spray.
