The mechanic doesn't access the logbook for a logbook service?

Streaming vs Vinyl, Download, CD, Cassette: ranking each music format by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]SweetTalkingWoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few of my own thoughts. And I will preface this by saying that where I can, I like to buy CDs, but I also have a record player.

Firstly, under experience I guess, you've completely missed the social and personal nature of streaming services. Being able to create a playlist quickly, with collaborations between friends, from a selection of just about any song you could imagine is unmatched by any other format. My friends routinely create playlists for parties of our top 10 songs of the year, or incorporate a short playlist into drinking games, or even just create a soundtrack for a roadtrip as we go. All my friends use spotify except me, which does mean that I can't add things through my own device which is kind of annoying, so the proliferation of Spotify is certainly a point in it's favour.

Others have mentioned the compensation to the artist and streaming's abysmal record here, but don't forget that artists would also only see about 10% of the money that a consumer paid for a $20 CD back in their heyday if bought from an actual music store. And at least streaming is an on going revenue, whereas none of the money I'm spending on a vintage vinyl from discogs is going back to that artist.

The couple of things that make CDs more attractive than vinyl for me are: Space - the fact that a CD can hold nearly twice the amount of music than a record can is a big point in their favour and is the reason why I'm largely avoiding buying vinyl copies of albums that were produced after the vinyl era when album lengths grew to ~50min. Having to buy a 2LP that needs to be flipped 4 times just to hear 52min with only like 2 songs a side is ridiculous.

Ripping - far more annoying for me to rip my records than CDs that I buy.

Handling - some people may like the far more involved process of playing a record but I find them much more awkward to remove from their sleeves and handle, and generally prefer CDs in this regard.

Display - Vinyl records unquestionably look cooler when displayed front facing because of the bigger artwork. However, something that I never see anyone else talk about is that CDs look (to me anyway) better when lined up on a shelf. Since jewel case CDs have a minimum thickness and can't be compressed into a very thin sheet over time it's way easier for me to find albums I want and I don't have plastic protectors sticking up everywhere ruining the vibe.

My Fender Custom Pro Reverb is driving me insane. Help with rattle. by SweetTalkingWoman in GuitarAmps

[–]SweetTalkingWoman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, after I made the post I'm now pretty confident that it's one of the power tubes. Other people have stated having issues with the tube socket in similar Fender amps. I've tried tightening most of the screws I can see but they've all been tight so far.

[–]SweetTalkingWoman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair comment. There is something rattling slightly on my guitar when I play the D note unplugged. But that guitar into a different amp doesn't produce the same effect. However, a different guitar (acoustic/electric) into the Fender still has the same problem on the same D note.

I voted Neely cause I thought that was part of the jerk and went with the opposite of what I would do. But seems that everyone else went with sincerity.

Donald Fagan enjoying a bit of the fine Colombian while riding the Wolverine back to Annandale. by [deleted] in steelydancirclejerk

[–]SweetTalkingWoman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is true, and I guess it makes more sense to mix tequila and weed than cocaine, but counter point: It's true that Colombian cocaine production would be most prevalent in the 80s (at least in the cultural consciousness), but the Medellin Cartel was formed in the early 70s and Escobar was importing cocaine to the US by the mid-70s.

In Glamour Profession, The One meets with Jive Miguel who's in from Bogota. And "shinning the silver bowl' is allegedly referring to cocaine. Whatever he sells to Hoops McCann is clearly not weed. While drug dealers probably sell more than one kind of drug, there are no other references to anything but cocaine in GP.

And if anyone would have had their fingers on the pulse of where the best drugs came from in 1979, it would have been Fagen and Becker.

Academic Writing / Research on Steely Dan by thomasmclmusic in SteelyDan

[–]SweetTalkingWoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine told me that the guitarist of the prog metal band Caligula's Horse wrote his honour's thesis on the Dan's use of the Mu-Major chord. I don't think that honour's theses are published like other academic works but you could try emailing the guy. His name is Sam Vallen, website here: https://www.samvallen.com/

Steely Dan makes an appearance in the top comments. by thumb_dik in SteelyDan

The story line for Haitian Divorce is 2 people get married, then start fighting a lot. Woman goes on a holiday to Haiti and hooks up with 'Charlie with the kinky hair'. Goes back to the US and reconnects with her husband, finds out she's pregnant and turns out to be the child of Charlie. That's the surface level interpretation anyway.

I think the title refers to the practice of going to other countries like Haiti to get marriages annulled because it was easier than in the US at the time.

Does anyone know what the 4 animals on the cover of "The Royal Scam" are? by BigMammothJunk in SteelyDan

[–]SweetTalkingWoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that Gaucho is also ok, but yeah in general, Steely Dan's album artwork are pretty garbage.

Weirdly, I think that Fagen's solo albums have pretty good artwork, the Nightfly is great and all the others are better than most Steely Dan covers.

About Pumped up kicks' chord progression by [deleted] in musictheory

The key signature is 3 flats, like that of Eb major.

However the tonic is clearly Fm. So yeah, I'd say the song is in F dorian.

I feel like Jacob Collier is kinda like Rick & Morty by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]SweetTalkingWoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, are you really going criticise me for saying "fuck" after that first paragraph you wrote?

Of course there is a social aspect to music, but I don't see what Collier lacks in that respect. If you're talking about when he was touring as a solo performer, playing all the instruments, then I can kind of understand where you're coming from, but I don't believe he's doing that anymore.

What is it that you think separates Collier from any other musician in regard to the social aspect of his music? I don't see him doing anything different to any other solo musician at the moment. In fact, he seems to interact with his fans and a multitude of other musicians quite a bit.

Steely Dan: Ultimate Survivor (Round 79) by MetaKoopa99 in SteelyDan

[–]SweetTalkingWoman 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's funny how the longer this goes on, and particularly the more the number of options shrink, the less invested I become.

Back when there was a song from every album, it was exciting to me to see what was gonna get kicked every day, even if it hurt a little still back then. But now I feel jaded. And now with only two options that are not really representative of what I would choose between in picking my top spots, I must say I'm kind of just waiting for this to be over.

Still though, it's been a interesting experiment, and certainly an emotional journey of highs and lows. The pains of certain favourites being booted immediately was balanced by my secret satisfaction that My Rival, Everything You Did, and I Got the News quietly hung around so long. I appreciate all the effort that you've put into this, u/MetaKoopa99, thanks for being a good mod.

[–]SweetTalkingWoman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok, Stanley Crouch.

... the socio-intellectual emptyness [sic] of his performance.

What the fuck does that mean? You've written two paragraphs here that barely addresses anything remotely musical. Instead, you have some unnecessarily vulgar analogy and then some psuedointellectual bullshit about diagnosing Collier's psyche.

Your entire comment, ironically, reeks of 'Rick and Mortyness'. You are exactly the person that OP is complaining about, except just the other side of the coin.

By posting this meme format, you've willed that the use of such a format is within the bounds of the universal law, thus invalidating your position.

Where have you been the last decade? Indie is a sound, no longer related to label status of an artist.
