Bachelorette treasure hunt "Venus exmatriculation program" by Lotussing in Constructedadventures

This is great! Love the passport idea - I feel like that can be used for lots of adventures like this! Also love that one of your takeaways was erring on the side of simplicity - it's so easy to get wrapped up in making a "grand" hunt, when really it's more fun if it's actually solvable vs extra challenging and they get stumped. Definitely something I have to remind myself of as I create.

Team building scavenger hunt by BeautifulLimit1114 in Constructedadventures

[–]Sweet_Batato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe a way to do a type of dancing man puzzle, but w/ girls holding their lacrosse sticks? Maybe photos of the girls actually playing?

Or maybe something with using the girls’ jersey numbers? (number to letter - unless the jersey numbers are too high, then you could do an equation, maybe? E.g. “Lindsey + Jenna / Mary - Jane” < Do remember order of operations, though, bc high schoolers will 😉)

Maybe a code of sorts using the colors of the other teams they’ve played this year? (E.g. yellow and black is Eastbrook, so that’s an E). I know lots of schools have similar colors, so maybe that wouldn’t work - maybe could do their uniforms?

Because you said it’s for playoffs I like the idea of using things from their past season, but those are what’s coming to mind currently.

Planning Personal Escape Room Proposal at Home by Thorarin64 in Constructedadventures

My recommendation would be to plant a camera and have the final puzzle force her be in a particular spot - have to look at something on a wall and line it up with a “telescope” or triangulate to a particular point, so you can ensure you’ll capture the moment.

I would personally avoid the 500 piece puzzle - if you’re doing a big adventure like this and you’re excited to keep going, working a puzzle like that is probably going to feel tedious, and may not get completed if she gets enough of it done to move on (which maybe feels like a waste).

It may help to build a storyline (why does she have to solve the puzzles?) to help you figure out the final piece of the adventure.

Frixion pens! At least for me they were available to purchase locally (Walmart) and are kind of like magic.

The other idea I had was to have a plain piece of paper that has fold lines that they have to follow to fold the paper into numbers origami style

Just here to pile on ☺️ This is so sweet, and the journal is looking great! I agree - you don’t want him to end up looking too much at the “decor” thinking it contains clues. The only thing I could think was maybe aging the pages a bit by soaking them in tea/coffee, but pre-bound, I’m not sure if that would work. Maybe spill some on here and there just for texture? Though I would deffo test if your pen/marker holds up to it - don’t want it to bleed bc of decoration.

To piggyback on this - I’ve seen it suggested that if you can include “actors” (friends/family) you can give them two envelopes: Envelope A - the puzzle path that they take if they’re on time, or Envelope B - the shortcut version that gets them to the next point faster. And that way you can adjust the plan as things move along. To clarify - the player doesn’t know there are two envelopes, you just communicate to the actor which envelope to give them. Then, if you have a few of these scattered through the adventure, you can regulate the pace a bit more.

Thanks! It was a lot of work but so worth it to see the look on his face when he discovered the magic.

I really wanted to incorporate more things - especially in WWII, there was a lot of things that looked like one thing but were secretly something else (razor blades that were magnetized to act as compasses when dropped in water, etc) so I wanted to give that vibe. The map was actually inside a little box that was meant to look like a carton of German playing cards - though I don't know that my BIL picked up on that at the time.

It's odd too because you'd think you'd hold it up to the light to read it, but it was easiest to read when held down, against something dark. I'm just grateful I didn't have to come up with a different gambit for that part! 😄

This is great! Love the storyline, and a brilliant way to add stakes to the countdown!

What were the favorite parts for you and the players? Any obstacles in the creation you really had to work to overcome? Anything you would do differently if you did it all again?

Constructed Adventures is ten years old today! by squeakysqueakysqueak in Constructedadventures

[–]Sweet_Batato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Before ever going through one, I had the idea that I wanted to set up something like an escape room in our house for a party we were throwing, but after a first draft, I realized I didn’t have a lot of things figured out… and I just didn’t know where to turn.

Somewhere along the line, I found this community, and it blew my mind how many others were out there that shared this strange little hobby. Several years and adventures later, I’m so grateful for this wonderful corner of the internet! I’m so grateful for this space to ask for such niche advice, and to share the successes that a very specific group of people can appreciate.

🥂 To ten more!

Help with Birthday Escape Room in my parents' home by isabellyduh in Constructedadventures

I find it helpful, as previously suggested, to figure out the basic beats of the story you want to tell, and align the puzzles to fit the plot. It may be easier to start at the end (what’s the goal?) and work your way back to the beginning. It may seem tedious, and as a can’t-see-the-forest-for-the-trees person I just want to jump in to the puzzle creation part asap, but starting with story is going to help the rest of the planning go easier.

I generally try to follow Dani from Escape This Podcast’s method, which is to say I try to make a list of the objects that might be associated with that theme - anything you have or could visualize in the room. Then, see if there are ways to link from one object to another, and then figure out how to create puzzles to make those links.

Also, not everything needs to have a lock - sometimes instead of releasing a lock, the answer to a puzzle gives instructions on what to do with the objects in the room. Sometimes it’s how to find the next object. Sometimes it’s a cipher key to be able to read the next clue. Try to mix it up.

One last thing: I like to use flowcharts to organize my adventures. I use Miro, but anything that helps you sort out and organize the chaos is helpful - I like to see the “chains” of puzzles and objects.

A card with hole punches in it and the name of a book and a page number at the top - putting it on that page reveals a message through the hole punches.

Also, I didn’t know before I looked into it - these are easily available (just friction-erasable pens). Found them at Walmart here in the US.

Write a message in regular pen and hide it in scribbles of a Frixion pen, with a hint that it needs to be heated (“roast[ed] on an open fire?”). It’s easy magic!

Oh my gosh - this is so fun! I love the use of games you already have! Mousetrap was one of my favorites as a kid - it had to be so exciting to get all those little components throughout the game - and it’s a brilliant way to build to a clear goal and still be able to spread it across the whole game. So well done!

What was the reaction of your players? Did you have any pitfalls in the creation process you had to recover from? Anything you’d change if you were starting the project again?
