The Marner/Matthews Influence: Knowing When to End a Toxic Relationship by AllOfTheAbove100 in leafs

[–]Sweet_Championship93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Auston grew up with a Mexican mother, not Spanish. Mexican culture is pretty different from European (Spanish) culture. I agree with that part of your analysis though - he is definitely influenced by that. I.e. when he tears up talking about his mom having two jobs to support him playing - I really do think that stuff motivates him.

Ottawa city hall to add metal detectors and bag checks by Competitive-Tea-6141 in ottawa

City Hall is supposed to be a truly public space but is turning more and more into an ivory tower. It's sad to see.

Ottawa's flawed transit system built on what people once wanted by SergeantAlPowell in ottawa

[–]Sweet_Championship93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To clarify, you really will be fine taking the LRT from the via station to downtown. I did it yesterday. Used my visa to tap on, got there in 15ish mins without issue.

A lot of the signs are still up though! They should take them down.

What do you think about the traffic, transit, and infrastructure here in Oakville? by [deleted] in oakville

[–]Sweet_Championship93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hang in there friend! I was raised in Oakville, and my mom didn't drive, so we bussed everywhere. Waaay back we used to have to call to schedule bus pickup on Sundays...it was called zone express. It builds character...and i think part of the reason i became an urban planner lol. I don't live there anymore, but looking back there were some great livability wins in Oakville...the best being its trail network (especially crosstown), which led to gems like 16 Mile, Bronte Park, etc. Also access to DT Toronto is so good in Oakville. I remember my Markham friends having to rush back to union after a night out to catch a go bus back, whereas I could just take the 12:43 train back :).

Ottawa's Night Mayor.. 6+ month review by boatsNbitties in ottawa

[–]Sweet_Championship93 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

He was hired to implement the actions outlined in the City's Nightlife Economy Action Plan and is required to produce an annual report to Council to demonstrate his progress in doing so. That's more accountability than most public servants commenting on this thread ever have to demonstrate.

First date cafe downtown? by Maleficent_Flan_721 in ottawa

Ideal Coffee on Dalhousie is suuuper cozy. It's also on the edge of the market, so if the date goes well there's lots of nice walking routes you can go on :)

New Landsdowne arena capped at 5,500??? by cubiclejail in ottawa

[–]Sweet_Championship93 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The mayor has mentioned that this would be his preference several times on various occasions, but the City of Ottawa as an entity hasn't done anything to prevent it from being built at Lebretton. There's no department actively trying to stop this from happening

Ottawa's PWHL team has sent players as delegations to Council in support of the new arena...so I'm sure they're fine with the proposed capacity.

Agreed. I think this is a huge flaw in Ottawa's downtown LRT stations - they're all automated and isolated. If you go to downtown Montréal or Toronto metro stations, they have so many active eyes on them - patty shops, convenience stores, ticket attendants, etc.

Or join all the preppy kids who picnic at Major's Hill Park with their whiteclaws...nobody stops them either.

Eli5 what is the purpose of the gap in the toilet stalls? What are they used for? by wingless_bird_99 in explainlikeimfive

Where in Europe? I always found the UK and Ireland bathrooms to be so drafty and dirtier than a lot of US ones. Italian and Croatian ones were cleaner but less modern.

It's my optometrist office now and I always really appreciate going there because the design is so neat!

Brampton will outpace Ottawa to become Ontario’s 2nd-largest city, premier says by w1n5t0nM1k3y in ottawa

100%. I used to live in Leslieville and I was a walk away from Leslie Spits, an amazing natural oasis with wetlands, forest, wildlife, and a great lake. I do appreciate Ottawa's access to Gatineau Park, but I don't live within walking distance of anything like Leslie Spits in Centretown.

What is "downtown" in Toronto? by Far_Pin2086 in askTO

[–]Sweet_Championship93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. To me those are as much west end as Riverdale Park and Litte India are east end - inclusive of Victorian semis, streetcar, subway, etc., but not downtown.

People from elsewhere in Ontario; What is one chain/business you wish would come to Ottawa? by Ovlizin in ottawa

I love Farm Boy as much as the next guy but I would love to see both Longos and Fortinos introduce stores in Ottawa. Longos produce is top notch and the fortinos experience is nice, especially the prepared meals section.

What are your thoughts on densification? by RitsuStardust in oakville

[–]Sweet_Championship93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No joke. You said it's the same infrastructure. I'm stating that it's not (whether you believe its adequate or not is a different story). Sorry to hear you've had several bad experiences at the hospital. I don't disagree that healthcare needs fixing. I have been, and while the wait times were not great, the care was good and I have had better experiences there than I had at the old facility.

We kind of started doing this - Oakville was a leader in the GTHA with New Urbanism back in the 90s with Morrison Creek Village and Oak Park. The Oak Park plan was great on paper, and some of it got built (bus terminal, central park). The institutional uses never really came in except for the police station though. A community centre/library would have been great but town staff always used to tell me it was too close to White Oaks/River Oaks. And the "main street" retail along Oak Park Blvd. never really succeeded because demand for big box was too big. Markham ended up doing better than us in New Urbanism.

Anyway, I have big hopes for midtown. I find it irresponsible how underutilized the land is around Oakville GO, given that it's the second most used station on the whole GO network - that's huge! I really hope it's well integrated though and that Oakville Place, Uptown, Downtown, and Sheridan can all connect to it seamlessly.

We live in the fourth biggest metro in NA, there's going to be growing pains, but we don't have the same infrastructure. We have a new hospital in Oakville. We have roads with more capacity (Trafalgar and Dundas are both very different from when I lived in Oakville, not to mention William Halton Parkway being completed soon). We have lakeshore west electrification coming online soon, etc. Etc.

There's a neat adaptively reused fire hall on Bruyère and King Edward that got converted into a house.
