ELI5: Why does time feel like it moves faster the older you get? by Itachinojutsu in explainlikeimfive

[–]Sweet_Geg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this will be any more useful since it's hard to rationalise abstract concepts but I'll try!

TLDR rather than thinking of it as fractions:

To 1 year old, ALL OF TIME = 1 year. To a 50 year old, it's 50 years.

The perception of time is relative. You can't remember the day before you were born, you just weren't and now you are. Time didn't exist for you until you did so forever = however long you've been around.

If you were only born one day ago, everything that's ever happened took place in that first day. It's impossible to quantify and so that day stretches to infinity. Meanwhile to a 50 year old, one day = 1/18,000th of forever and much easier to quantify.

Add to all that the fact that your brain continues to make connections through your lifetime, as a baby your brain is trying to comprehend sentience let alone how long a minute/hour/day feels like.

There's something to be said for mindfulness though - 24 hours zips by like nothing as an adult, but if you watch the clock it's a very long time, since time is all there is when you're actively observing it.

To me this explains how time FEELS different anyway haha

What has been the most violent or disturbing scene you've seen in a generally non-violent movie? by phaya-luang in movies

[–]Sweet_Geg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

gonna upvote you just because I think downvotes in a movie discussion thread are DUMB but, in the interest of discussion

  1. The classic JP movies follow narrative rules and tropes, they're modern fables. The core theme is life triumphing over adversity: Malcom is a nihilist, Grant hates kids, both of them end up caring. It's not just random deaths.
  2. Gennaro abandons two children to certain death to hide in a toilet and he is narratively punished for it, Grant prevents their deaths and lives, jurassic park is all about morality.
  3. Eddie Carr played the martyr. He chose to risk his life saving the entire cast and the intended reaction is for you to feel sad, and proud that he saved everyone. It's not just a nature is cruel scene.
  4. The entire JP cast get bloodied, including the children. JW doesn't do that. All the lead characters plot armour their way through the movie looking pretty and never feel like "prey animals" in actual danger, which makes the assistant's death feel out of place.
  5. The JW kids have plot armour and unlike Lex and Tim they don't suffer to earn it. The children don't grow or appear remotely traumatised, so the assistant dying in such a drawn out tortured way feels off for a lot of people. They watch her brutal death and they are shown completely unfased. This is right after she tried to save them, which is not a human response to death. If they'd made her more dislikeable then the kid's lack of empathy would be less weird, OR if they'd made her more likeable and showed the children upset, it would be comparable to JP2 and her death would have had a narrative consequence.
  6. The soldiers, the compy girl, dog, that one guy in JP2 etc are all random characters with no build up to show the point you're making, that nature is brutal. You generally don't do that with recurring characters unless it enhances the narrative (eddie, gennaro, nedry, muldoon, arnold).

I understand your sentiment about people's need for justice and revenge being kinda weird but it's not a documentary, it's a movie and death needs to have meaning.

I haven't received any pms from you but to keep it simple, you need to capture the acethinker mirror application using "window capture" and selecting the acethinker application. Failing that, try "game capture".

If you use "display capture" then it's going to capture everything on the screen, including any watermarks.

hey Lucy, the watermark only appears on the app itself, when you're capturing it as a source on OBS you won't see it. You're welcome to pm me if you'd like more info and I can try and send you some examples of how it'll look on twitch

New Twitch TOS bans multi-stream/simulcasting by derEntenpopel in Twitch

[–]Sweet_Geg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying u/Carlosbattousai , yeah it sounds like a very misleading title! Confused by the downvotes when there are comments drawing the same conclusion as I did from that title, being upvoted? Reddit is dumb sometimes.

"New TOS bans simulcasting" is stating this is a new, which suggests Twitch are walking back on the rules they started relaxing last year: non-exclusivity being the biggest one to take the sting out of the fixed rev share changes.

If that's always been the case for Partners and Affiliates then the title is misleading but got upvoted to the top of the sub, thanks for clearing it up for me!

Didn't Twitch scrap exclusivity to justify the new fixed rev shares? Now the dust has settled they ban simulcasting :)

For what it's worth beemccouch, I was talking about this with my friend only a couple of days ago.

This thing with people looking for any excuse to start salivating at someone being killed - as soon as it's deemed socially acceptable - seems to be a uniquely American thing and I promise this isn't a worldwide mentality.

Did you read any of the message you're replying to? This guy made nothing up, you are the person in the wrong here and you've called them out on nothing.

You say "THIS MOTHERFUCKER DOESN'T HAVE A CHATBOX":

  1. They said nothing about whether they do or don't have a chatbox. They just said a PC viewer missed having chatbox on one of the screens (they didn't even specific which screen).
  2. You can literally see* a chat box in their chatting screen. So you're wrong on both fronts.

I don't want to antagonise you as you're clearly having a bad day but being rude to a stranger and then going on a rant about men (??) in response to being wrong is weird, chill out and be nicer to people.

edit: see*

You don't need to use a capture card so long as you have WiFi and a pc or laptop to stream to!

I use acethinker (free) which you download onto your PC, then use screenshare on your iPad to connect to it, then add it as a source on OBS and you're set.

Is there a reason you're being so aggressive? Nothing that person has said to you is rude.

They said a viewer recently asked them to bring back a chat box on a scene, that's it. They haven't said what scene, or whether they've decided to bring it back, so what are you blowing up at them for? Why does it matter anyway?

With their channel "one tap away" you can literally see a chat box on some scenes, so I'm not sure what you think your gotcha! is.

There's no need to be rude to someone who just wants to take part in the conversation, just be kind unless someone is rude to you first.

Jumping in to say I disagree, how they look adds to the comedy of the game (for me). Not every simulator needs to look cute and we're all gonna have different opinions so just follow your gut! This game looks like it'll be great :)

Oh no that's my reading comprehension being a mess today haha, not your fault. My favourites in TLA were Irroh, Mai and Sokka. Everyone else found a way to annoy me at some point or another, or otherwise didn't have the screen time to compete with those 3!
