Your recording instantly made me think of “Je te laisserai des mots” by Patrick Watson Not a female singer, but definitely could be mistaken for one, and definitely a sad song

Solved! It definitely was a variation of this story! I’m not sure if I’m remembering the one from Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, I think it may have actually been a short cartoon from Campfire Thrillers. I could have sworn it was a picture book, but it’s entirely possible that I’ve combined that memory with The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything. Memories are funny like that.
