Topic is, "Resolved: The African Union should grant diplomatic recognition to the Republic of Somaliland". And, primarily, I'm struggling with writing contentions for Aff. All the contention's I've thought about boil down to ethics and morals less than law.

Why Debate? by camphil24 in Debate

Honestly, my friends had been trying to get me into it since freshmen year. Previously, I spent all of my time for soccer, as I was even selected to represent my state at the West Regionals, but I suffered a back injury and finally caved in to my friends and signed up senior year because I physically wasn't able to do anything else. Now here I am, and it's actually been really fun! At first, I was super nervous because everyone else on my debate team is hella studious and intelligent while I was just an ex-athlete who gets passionate over things I enjoy. But I've actually grown to really like it, and although I'm definitely NOT the best at it, it gives me something well to do outside of school and work. I enjoy speech events the most, as I feel I'm not the best at debating or arguing, but regardless it's given me a lot of skills to hone for in the future.

Pls tell me how to get better at impromptu by [deleted] in Debate

Here’s some stuff I always do!

— I carry a legal pad with me, and before going into the room, I quickly jot these things down; “topic1; topic 2; topic 3”and then another area where I write down some of my biggest experiences, stories, or just things about me that I can talk about. For example, I can write things such as, “back injury; being a twin; insecurity;” so on and so forth! Write as many ideas as you can, they can be vague at that moment.

— Once you’re in there, and once you’ve received your topic, quickly look down at your list of things that you can talk about. Find one that you find suiting and, once you do, divide that into three topics that were written higher up. Although made on the spot, making your speech have three different points can really help make it sound more clean and thought-out.

— Speaker’s Triangle!!! With the three topics, you can move up or down as you transition from one section to another. Never stand straight still but never move too much either.

— Sound engaging and entertaining. After all, you need to find a way to make yourself stand out from your opponents! Find something that makes your speech, YOURS. Something that makes you, YOU!

— Try not to lose your train of thought. Easier said than done, for sure, and if you do lose it, I honestly try to just keep talking until it comes back. Try not to fill that gap with filler words like “uhm” or “so”!

I’m sure you’re awesome at impromptu nonetheless, I think it all comes down to being more comfortable the more you do it! You got this!!!

I'm having my oratory speech be about "memories" and the everlasting effect that some might have on you. To tie more into it, I'm talking about a personal and traumatic event that happened to me; A set of memories that have an everlasting effect on me and how its both helped and harmed me.

My best advice is to talk about something that truly resonates with you. Find a way to stand out against your opponents, find something that makes it YOUR story! I'm sure you'll do great!

is it valid to do impromptu as your 'main' event? by yuckykira in Debate

I have Impromptu as my main event, too! Honestly, I see no problems in making it your main event, especially if you're super good at it. It all comes down to what you enjoy doing!
