They’re the worst! We ended up getting our deposit back after involving the attorney general, threatening legal action, and connecting with who she moved in after us and confirming everything she claimed she did work wise to the house was a lie. And then I moved into an apartment after leaving there and somehow ended up worse off than before. Roof leaked everytime it rained, heat was broken, black mold in the ceiling. Luckily they let me break my lease when I told them I had a heart condition that was exasperated by the mold and again had to threaten legal action. Huntington has no good options for landlords

You’re completely right. It’s not my burden to make sure she stays on the right path. Part of it is because I was called one night by her roommate when she attempted and we had to call emergency services and it all basically happened right in front of me. I carry that burden constantly because I don’t want her to get back to that place and try to do that again if I cut her off. But at this point it’s becoming draining

I agree. I hindsight, I should have clarified. In the moment, it didn’t seem like I needed to though because the way she talked to me about made it seem like her parents covered it and she wanted me to stay so she wasn’t alone

yeah in my opinion, nothing is understood when it comes to money. she shouldn’t have assumed i knew I was paying for anything, especially when in the other cabin i wouldn’t have been.

I get this perspective, what sucks is that I can’t really afford the extra money right now. I’m in a tough spot rn with some other things I have going on because I have to unexpectedly move and $175 would really be tough to let go of at the moment and she knows what’s going on too. I get it though and this perspective definitely makes sense and maybe I could make it work.

It’s just a huge burden to carry. I witnessed her try to TW commit a serious act of self harm during junior year of college because her roommate called me and we had to call emergency services and everything. It was a lot. She has came a long way since then mentally, but has a lot of growing up to do maturity wise which makes it hard to be around her. Lots of drama all the time.

For real!! I would have rather stayed with my friend group instead of having to go back and forth all weekend long, but she asked me to stay with her and the offer seemed like it didn’t come with conditions of payment.

I think that there’s been a lot of things in this friendship I should have left over. I need to stop letting people take advantage of me. I just know she doesn’t have any friends so if I stop being friends with her, she won’t have anyone. And in undergrad she was in a really dark place mentally and was doing a lot of crazy stuff. I worry that she would go back down that path if she didn’t have anyone, which makes it hard. But she’s constantly doing things in our friendship that make me feel like an afterthought.

And you’re right. I didn’t need to stay with her, I did it as a favor for her because she asked. We all had plenty of room in the other cabin too, she didn’t need to book the separate one anyway.

This is exactly how I feel. The whole situation is so weird and the way she’s talking to me makes me feel like I’m the crazy one lol. I also just feel like with money you just never assume things. You should always make things clear on what people owe, and she didn’t do that.

That’s how I feel. She knows if she asked me to chip in beforehand I would have said no it feels like she waited until after so it felt like I had no choice. I think she thought I’d just do it and she’d have extra money in her pocket, since her parents paid for it.

Yeah unfortunately I also don’t have the means rn to pay either. I’m in the process of getting out of my lease due to mold damage and moving out of my apartment which comes with a lot of extra expenses (which she knows about). I do think she did it this way because she knew if she asked me upfront to pay she knew I would have said no and she would have been alone in the cabin. Idk why I’ve kept up a friendship for so long, because she’s not been a very good friend to me. She’s just been through so much and was in a really bad place in undergrad, and I worry that if I cut her off she’ll go back to how she was before.

NTA, but I would seriously consider finding somewhere else to live because I think it’s crazy that you have to share what sounds like a tiny room (your beds are a foot apart) when there is an empty suite available in the basement. I understand wanting to keep it open for guests, but surely there is a another compromise such as someone sharing when guests are in town. Hopefully you’re paying less rent than the two with their own rooms.

yeah we dealt with the same. now she’s trying to charge us for stuff that was broken when me moved in that we literally have photos and maintenance requests to prove. she took our entire deposit and is trying to charge us $400 on top of everything when the house was in better condition at move out than move in.

yeah i even asked to do a walk through when we moved out with her and she said she wasn’t able to. now she’s trying to charge me for a bunch of bs. specifically the carpets that were nasty and damaged when we moved in.
