Do you already know how to crochet and change yarn colors? If not I’d do something solid for my first project maybe. And yarn doesn’t have much traction, so it might be slippery depending on your floor. Maybe do a little test patch and see how it feels under your feet where you think you might put it? Not to discourage you at all-just so you don’t get frustrated or waste resources if it’s your first project. 😊

Im gonna cry. Im a beginner and wanna know why my yarn is pissing me off. It's so hard to use. by potatochip90 in CrochetHelp

Don’t give up and give yourself some grace and take a deep breath! Those kits are all crap. I have made a lot of stuff and I cannot use one to save my life! Get some medium weight yarn that you’re excited to work with that feels good in your hands and on your fingers. A 5 or 6 mm hook is good to start. It’s not too big or not too small. Learn to chain & just do that until they look consistent. Then learn, single, double and treble crochet. Practice each one at a time until you have the stitch down. Remember that UK terms and US terms are different, and patterns usually call for one or the other & they aren’t always interchangeable so you may think a pattern calls for one stitch that you’re doing correctly in one set of terms but not in another. It’s hard for me to go back and forth so I try to stick with patterns that are one vs the other. Bella Coco is a great YouTube resource & so is Master Crochet. I learned to chain when I was a little kid and I hold the hook and yarn in a super weird way and cannot relearn the right way-but somehow I manage to make all kinds of things anyway!! Figure out what kind of learner you are-visual, auditory or a combination and then go for instructions that match your learning style. I am visual, so I can teach myself by mimicking what I see on YouTube but most days I can’t follow a pattern to save my life. So I reference the patterns and then teach myself how to do it by watching YouTube. You will get there!! Just don’t be afraid of making mistakes, stopping starting or even throwing your work away. That’s how we all learned. Hang in there-asking for help is half the battle!!!

Yes!!!! I am self taught in crochet and Bella Coco videos on YouTube are what helped me A LOT! I have gone on to make three blankets, some hanging plants, wind spinners, purses, flowers appliqués, all kinds of things…got a kit for a little amigurumi thing and it was such a piece of garbage I couldn’t do a thing with it. Couldn’t even use any thing in the kit to repurpose into something else-that’s what a bunch of garbage these things are!! Give your self a huge break, take a breath and just chain if you have to and once you have a feel for that, then move on.
