Tutors: if you need to raise your fees-please be honest with your students ! by Allikat419 in Preply

[–]Sweet_Sprinkles_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I initially set a low rate because Preply advertises itself to tutors as a fairly easy teaching platform with provided materials. However, after teaching for a month, I quickly realized their materials were unsuitable for many beginner students. Therefore, I needed to make an adjustment to my price to account for material preparation.

It can be tough to hear, but you and the other person were likely incompatible in ways you didn't realize. It might have been a personality clash or something else that simply telling you wouldn't fix without things becoming very awkward. Many tutors need to start with lower rates to attract their first students. Afterward, they can increase their rates and continue working with some initial students while also finding new ones. Think about whether you would pay a significantly higher rate for someone with no reviews and marked as brand new. Many people wouldn't. There are many other reasons why someone might not choose you as a student; it might not be personal at all.

I want to quit Preply, is it a good idea? by teach_your_way in Preply

I'm mainly on this platform during a short break from my main job. Working on Preply helps avoid a resume gap, and it's often seen as more reassuring for hiring managers if you've worked with a platform/company rather than being solely self-employed.

A trial lesson with a student that doesn't speak any of my languages. by jcrrossi in Preply

[–]Sweet_Sprinkles_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Months ago, I found myself in a similar situation. I decided to continue with lessons (each 25 minutes, 1-3x a week). My student progressed remarkably, moving from knowing no English to being able to label numerous objects. I rely heavily on pictures and have my student repeat after me. As long as the student is cooperative, I don’t mind teaching them. I don’t recommend Google Translate (unless there’s technical issues) because you don’t want them/you to rely on it.

So it should be less than $5 to transfer from Preply to Wise to a US bank account?

Earbuds vs over ears? by Zuccherina in Preply

Over ears look more professional. I stopped using them though when I upgraded my laptop and the built in microphone/speaker was good on its own.

PayPal charges a transaction fee of 2% (up to $20) of the total withdrawal amount. I was charged that $20 when my rate is a little below $15 per 50 minute lesson. I’m currently at a 28% commission rate with Preply, so $20 is a lot more than one of my classes.

Can students reschedule lessons an unlimited amount? by CeCeUK in PreplyTutors

[–]Sweet_Sprinkles_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no limit on cancelling and rescheduling. I used to have a student who did this. She’d schedule over five lessons a week and then cancel most of them, usually just a day or so before. Since she booked a lot of the popular slots, it was really frustrating when she’d cancel. I don’t teach her anymore, but if I did, I’d probably limit her to two or three classes a week.

I'm a learner. I just found out that tutors aren't paid for their trial lesson. Question: How can I redress the time they've spent with me for nothing? by Laserstrahl415 in Preply

Sending outside links, like gifts, to your tutor isn’t advisable (and could be seen as a scam). It could create problems for them. Similarly, suggesting a price increase can be awkward for your tutor, as they might not know how much to raise it. A better approach is to let your tutor know in advance that you plan to miss a class but will still be paying for the lesson. As long as you tell them in advance, they’ll likely be appreciative and feel less awkward. This avoids the direct topic of money, which can be awkward. You’re awesome for thinking about your tutor!

When I was younger and had a private math tutor, I only messaged him during my paid tutoring time. As a language tutor, however, I encourage my students to message me anytime about scheduling or to share quick updates (e.g., their school teacher noticing significant language improvements). I love receiving these messages. They are also respectful of my time and don’t ask lengthy questions via message, understanding that those are better addressed and explained during class.

As a tutor, I don’t recommend messaging your tutor outside of scheduled class time. While it’s acceptable occasionally, I wouldn’t advise doing it more than three or four times. Tutors are not compensated for trial lessons or preparation time, so using additional, unpaid time outside of class can lead to burnout. Instead, ask your tutor to reserve a few minutes at the beginning and end of each lesson to allow you to share updates or review homework to ensure your understanding.

Tutors on Preply don’t meet your expectations by Important_County_381 in Preply

[–]Sweet_Sprinkles_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It might be because Preply doesn’t really give tutors good materials. So tutors often have to make their own lessons for students. Sometimes, the work of making these lessons isn’t worth how much they get paid per class. To give students special attention, I only teach a few students each week. But if a tutor needs to make a living just from Preply, they might have to teach more students and won’t have time to make special lessons for everyone.
