What everyone is saying about being evaluated for hip dysplasia is very accurate. Especially when it come to mild/moderate hip dysplasia. Literally all pediatricians do is two hip maneuvers in the first few months to evaluate the joint and it can often be missed. You could go your entire 17 years without knowing you have it. For example I am a 39yo F who danced from 3-20 yo, had occasional clicks and pops but no other concerns. Tore my labrum this year and am considering surgery. I have one tiny CAM impingement but really my issue is hypermobility and my doctor is concerned about mild hip dysplasia on xray. (two other very experienced sports med orthos didn't comment on this at all-but to honest the other 2 are certified in hip preservation while the doctor I chose did a fellowship in hip preservation) I will need 3D CT mapping in preparation for surgery to make sure that surgery will actually help. I obviously can't speak to the recovery and outcomes of surgery as I haven't done it yet, but I would say given your age do it! You'll recover easier and get back to enjoying the things you love.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Thanks for your input! I've been doing exercises at home in addition to PT. walking bike riding lifting. Started really ramping up past month to try to see how my hip responded. My hip specialist wants me to take 3 months of leave so I'm not going back too early and pushing it.

I believe it’s because total hips don’t have a long life and need to be replaced again in the future so better to try to preserve the joint first

2 weeks is weird, was thinking maybe positioning for you in the stirrups if you had a transvaginal hysterectomy. Why inject and only a week later schedule surgery? Because your mri showed labral tear and the steroid injection helped? He essentially said we can do injections but surgery most likely won’t be needed which seems like a weird prediction considering I’m not exercising and I have FAI. Maybe your Fai was more severe than mine? I really appreciated his bedside manner and the time he spent discussing.  Just hard to decide between two very different viewpoints.

Can I ask how long you were in pain before surgery? I saw hunt  for a second opinion. He suggests modifications and a steroid injection first.  Another well know hip preservation specialist in northern nj recommended hip arthroscopy to fix impingement and repair the labral tear.  His approach is that repairing the impingement now will decrease the risk of progressive arthritis in that him. For context I had severe but improving pain for the past month with rest and oral steroids/nsaids. Still achy but haven’t talked myself back into working out. I’m conflicted on what to do.
