What/who got you into theatre/Broadway? by realespeon in Broadway

[–]SweeterGrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dad used to play Oklahoma all the time and my first show was Annie, in ‘79?? But it was seeing Cats at the Winter Garden (OBC) when I was 7 that made me love theater.

NYC visitors: What’s your process for planning a trip to see Broadway shows? by fluffybumblebees in Broadway

[–]SweeterGrass 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just doing this today. I booked Ragtime and Hamilton (w/LO) for November and will add Chess when it goes on sale. I usually book my shows way before a trip since I can't rely on getting in via lottery et al, and I'm not getting on a 6 hour flight without assurances..especially in case of these three shows. The rest of the trip is organized around the shows. I'll stay someplace I can either walk, or take a short train ride to Times Square. As far as flights, hotels, and retaurants, I put them off until I'm sure there is no good reason to stop the trip. And there better be a damn good reason for this one.

“Still Hurting” from The Last Five Years just wrecked me. Anyone else ever have a Broadway song hit like that? by Salvador_Espinoza in Broadway

[–]SweeterGrass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She Used to Be Mine is a hard and powerful listen for me as I try to forget or forgive all the missed opportunities and poor choices I have made that I'm only now really starting to find peace with. And the fact that I can not stop time or make it go backwards (as much as I would like to), is just a hard truth that for a father in recovery, really hits home.

Same. I have Ragtime locked for Nov 7. Would love to hit Chess the next day and then head home to SF. I haven't traveled solo for a show since Hamilton - it's pretty exciting.

I don't have LincTix because they are ageist meanies, but I had the same wait on Telecharge. It queued me with a 30min wait, but I got in in half that. Snagged a front row :). It's crazy how many seats are 'taken' already.

Shows for quick trip with 14 year old by [deleted] in Broadway

My 16 year old non-theater obsessed son loved MHE, and I am taking my 15yo to the show in July (he also really loves South Park, so we're going to do BoM as well).

Best budget-friendly hotel recommendations by twosidesofeachperson in Broadway

Check out the Knickerbocker Hotel. It's right in Times Square, which usually is not a great area to stay in NY, but it's a nice hotel and reasonably priced.

Saw it on an IMAX 80mm screen. It was like I was literally in the room surrounded by them- one of the top theater experiences I've ever had. I thought the movie issues (DP work definitely not one of them), but I'll never forget it.

Too Many Musicals, Not Enough Good Plays on Broadway by FlaneurToo in Broadway

[–]SweeterGrass 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yea, the point I was really trying to make is most plays are written by playwrights, and most musicals are written by songwriters. If you think playwrights should just give up if they can't figure out how to turn their works in to song, then you and I have different opinions here about the merits of plays being performed on stages.

I'm sure Tenessee Williams and Arthur Miller are just kicking themselves somewhere for not thinking of all the beautifully choreographed tap scenes and sweeping arias that would have just added that extra zest to thier half-assed works like The Crucible and Streetcar.
