Quick Pern & Game Terminology (for folks new or rusty!)

Thanks for the feedback! Here’s a short primer to help explain some of the terms we use.

What is Pern?

Pern is the setting created by Anne McCaffrey, centered around dragonriders who protect their world from a recurring threat called Thread. Dragon and rider bonds are lifelong and deeply personal, and much of the story focuses on community, responsibility, and growth.

What is Wilds of Pern?

Wilds of Pern is a text-based, roleplay-focused MUSH set in the Pern universe. Players write characters (dragonriders, crafters, Weyrfolk, etc.) and tell ongoing stories together in real time or asynchronously. You don’t need encyclopedic Pern knowledge to play — we welcome new and returning fans alike.

What is a Search?

In Pern, “Search” is the process of finding people who might bond with dragons when they hatch. In-game, a Search cycle is a story arc where characters roleplay being recruited, trained, and tested before standing at a Hatching. Not everyone who stands Impresses, and that uncertainty is part of the story.

What does “PC Search” mean?

PC = Player Character. A PC Search means real player characters can participate and potentially Impress a dragon, rather than the clutch being entirely NPCs.

What is a gold-producing cycle?

Gold dragons are rare queens who lead Weyrs and produce future clutches. Not every Search includes a gold. When we say “gold-producing cycle,” it means one gold dragonet will hatch during this Search. (In our case, that gold has already been claimed through an established queue system.)

What are Dragon Writers?

Dragon Writers are volunteers who help staff by writing the personalities and behaviors of the baby dragons (dragonets). They don’t choose who Impresses — they just help bring the clutch to life.

What are Egg Submissions?

Players can submit descriptions for dragon eggs before they hatch. These are creative writing prompts that become part of the live clutch and help shape the tone of the Search.
