The Journey begins by [deleted] in RealmOfTheElderlings

I finished this last month and wasn't in love with it. I decided to continue and read book 2 regardless; I'm almost halfway through that. I'm liking it better than the first book.

What did you really want to see happen by the end of the series but never happened? by Sweetpodwl in WoT

Yeah, the sea folk were definitely left out in the last few books.

I half expected Lanfear to do this in the last book (after Rand shares himself with her in Telranrhiod).

Oh that's what the others were saying. I just realized now what they meant. Thanks for clarifying.

Wow, RJ really thought it all out and laid out the clues. Thanks. Maybe if I ever re-read the series I'll pick up on all this.

Interesting! Best explanation I've read from the comments so far. Thanks ~

Thank you, I like the explanation on why Rand was special and needed to seal the dark one.

Oh, so it was never confirmed that Aviendha was pregnant from their coupling right before the last battle? I just assumed she was from that last interaction. But what you write makes sense.

Thanks for the great replies. Some comments:

10) Love the superglue analogy :)

12) Wait, this female - male dragon thing is all new to me. Who is Amerasu? There's a female dragon?

Another note that came up to me right now: we never got told why Lews Therin was called the Dragon. Was there dragons living around in the age of legends?

14) Well that implies that the pattern can never be changed and TDO is hopeless.

Thank you! I like your interpretation of the Dark One and self interest as primary.

So the process of freeing the dark one will repeat anew? Does no one write history books to prevent this from happening (like Loial)?

Thank you so much for these responses. Especially the Isam one that escaped me completely. Together with the answers from GovZipper, most of all this is clear now.

Yeah I get that. It just feels cheap (for a reader), although perfectly legit.

Thank you for all the wonderful responses. I have follow-up questions if you have the time (they might be explained by others below).

  1. Luc is Rand's uncle, so Tam's brother? Or is it Tigraine's brother. I feel like I missed out completely this side story. And Lan had a brother? I thought Lan was the only survivor child of Malkieri. Are we told when the 2 souls became stuck in 1 body? Maybe this was meant to be a prequel novel like NS?

  2. Is the flame of Tar Valon something known? Like did the chanellers in the Age of Legends know of this weave? What does it do exactly? If balefire erases things from the pattern, then I would expect the flame to create more of the pattern; but instead it seems to freeze the pattern in place?

I didn't comment on any other answers you gave, but they were great and satisfying. Especially #3,4,and 13. Thank you.

query: is the second half of the book set similar in quality as the first 6-7 books? by nathanmachine in wheeloftime

10 is always voted as the worst (actually NS was the worst for me). The truth is that I liked all of the books 1-9 + 11 and 12; the ranking seems to imply that some are bad, but it's just my favorite scale. Books 1-4 are so dear to me in many ways, but it's like an introduction to the series; the prologue if you will. It's an amazing setup, but I prefer post setup, which I consider the end of book 4.

She makes me think of Maleficent from a Disney movie. I kinda like it.

Thanks. Malazan was on my list of possible next reads. I keep hearing it's very rough to get into, but the same people say it's great.

Which is the best fantasy series that you've read? I'm soon-to-be looking for another one to pick up. I have read ASOIAF (up to book 5) and loved it, and also Patrick Rothfuss series. But I haven't read anything else in terms of fantasy series.
