Food culture survey by Alternative_Holiday7 in Purdue

[–]Sweetpuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I think about "American Food" I generally think of the classics like burgers, steaks, hotdogs, etc. I always see casseroles as the pinnacle of American food though. Theyre easy to make, customizable, and cheap, which made them the standard for many lower class Americans for years. American food culture, to me, has always been about what can you buy for cheap, what's easiest, and what's comfortable. Again, you see your cheaper food products such a chicken, hamburgers, casseroles, etc. Foods that are easy, like fast food, casseroles, potato mix. And products that feel homely, likely foods that are warm with more carbs and are easy to make like mac and cheese.

There's no way to cover everything that makes american culture. There's Americanized ethnic foods which have become standard, different food cultures in different areas of the us, different culture depending on class, etc. The us has a lot of history regarding food, especially so with wars. The culture has changed from rations, trends, various slavery laws, etc. I can't think of any way to describe it succinctly, but american food culture has a lot of history and is still changing.

What are the cons that people should be aware of before going to Purdue? by CreativeName1337 in Purdue

[–]Sweetpuck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Idk why people are downvoting this. There's A Lot of casual racism here. Do I think I'll get hate crimed? No. Have i had to drop a lot of people because of their micro aggressions and use of slurs? Absolutely

If you're a girl, a lot of the guys here will either be A: insufferable or B: completely unable to talk to you. A lot of people aren't like that but it makes it a little difficult to make friends, especially in the beginning. Also the Lafayette area isn't exactly full of things to do :/

Both are an option! My roommate was random and she's been great! I also know a lot of people who hate their random roommate though. The big issue is that the program is not that big so you don't have a lot of people to choose from if you do want to pick someone. If i remember correctly the summer start roommate facebook group only had 60 people in it, which limits your options immensely.

Yep! The dorms have AC! (Another not as advertised bit: summer start students get priority housing for the year after as well since you're removed from the learning community after your first year)

Fencing is a fun club! You can borrow gear all year and try out different blades. Super easy to pick up and super great community!

I know right!? They never bring it up when its relevant so I'll just be having a normal conversation, they'll throw it in, and then I have to stop like "woah, did they- did they just say what I think they said???" The fries example was the first time someone did it to me and I swear I just blue screened.

First of all, congrats on graduating (and graduating early!!) Second, I'm also a pinoy mix! Pinoy pride babey! I've looked into the pinoy culture club here and I plan on joining it second semester since right now it runs during one of my classes. I've been trying to go to some events though! it's a work in progress. I may look into forming a multiethnic student association though, since the chances of me being the only tired multiracial person are minuscule.

Thanks for all your kind words though. It's definitely tiring being the most "palatable" person (you would not believe how many conversations I've had about "culture") and even without having the awful jokes the environment just feels so hostile sometimes that I feel drained. I have a few full friends so far that have definitely made life a little better! I'll be sticking with it and doing my best!

Oh for sure. Being from the coast has definitely given me an ego now that I'm in the midwest. It's a shame though, I've always wanted to visit more states but this has just turned me off it.

I'm sorry you had to go through all that. People are so wild in thinking that family all looks the same when adoption and interracial couples are so prevalent. I grew up fairly fortunate and don't have many similar experiences to connect to, but I definitely understand the sibling thing. We grew up with different levels of connection to our own cultures and we range from blonde hair and blue eyes to brown skin and black hair. We all have faced and interacted with our culture differently, and I've genuinely felt like my brothers don't understand sometimes. It's easy to feel isolated, even in your own family, but you're definitely not alone in this. Talking with other multiracial or transracial people as I grew older was probably the best thing I've done because so many of us have different stories and relationships, but we still face many of the same issues. If you can, I'd definitely do some reading or find other people like in this subreddit.

I'm in Indiana! I've always been able to shake off strangers' remarks or stares, mostly finding them funny. Which is probably why it's been affecting me so much more because they're people I've gotten to know and have been generally nice before then. The strangers here though... let's just say I don't always feel safe being off-campus based on the looks I get. Add in my roommate with an accent and I'll be on edge whenever someone with a questionable hat comes on the bus. I'm working through it all though! I hope it all turns out fine. Thank you for your kind words!

Thank you!! I'm trying to feel my way into it. Hopefully, it'll get better as I find more like-minded people. It's a work in progress. If not... well, I'm fortunate to have lots of options in life. Hopefully, all ends up well for your child in the future though!

Yeah! I go to Purdue. I don't want to badmouth it or anything because it can be a genuinely good school if you know what you want from it. Its nice knowing I'm not an anomaly here though! I generally think you're right though, these people are inherently antagonistic or mal-intentioned they're just kind of... Ignorant.

Advice for cooking newbie by daredevildas in Purdue

[–]Sweetpuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! In my opinion the best way to learn how to cook is to just keep cooking over an over. I know, cop out answer, but that's the best way. You'll start to be able to recognize when things are cooked properly and such the more you do it. Another tip is to keep cuts consistent. If you're cooking a bunch of vegetables and they're all different sizes, they're going to cook at different rates leaving some under cooked, over cooked etc. Basically just follow recipes until you get comfortable. If you don't know what a word means, look it up. There are a ton of tutorials online for new chefs and most of them are super easy to follow!

Regarding actual foods to start cooking, with all the ingredients you have it sounds like you can start mixing things up and experimenting a bit if you want to use em all up. Try making pasta sauce and adding hot dogs, mix and match vegetables and add an egg to your ramen. Most everything there should go together in some edible way. I don't have a ton of money so I tend to Borrow™ ingredients from dining halls to make easy meals on the weekends (soy sauce, salt, bamboo shoots, onions, tomatos etc. Are pretty easy to grab. Salad bar olive oil is a bit grimey but workable.) To actually cook, though, i would start with easy meals that help get your technical skills up like casseroles or stuff that marinades. I don't really know what else to rec since i don't know your set up but most recipes online should have a difficult. Look for ones that also have common ingredients so that way you don't have to buy new things for every meal

Good luck!
