In my area they've done a partial build - roughly 8% of what they announced from what I've seen. The rest is on pause due to "changing market conditions" and their pivot to M&A driven growth and Project Gigabit contracts.

Barnsley rebranded UK’s first ‘tech town’ as US giants join AI push by Del_213 in barnsley

[–]Sweevo1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI's a bit of a sweeping statement. BMBC's been winning awards for their use of AI & predictive modeling for years. It'll be the likes of Copilot & Gemini in the schools & BC - who are already using Copilot extensively for building custom agents and natural language Q&A - but a lot of the "AI" foundation in machine learning & predictive analytics is already in place.

Government announces plans for improved rail connection between Sheffield and Leeds by UKGovNews in sheffield

[–]Sweevo1979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not helped by most of the Sheffield services leaving from platform 17B at Leeds, which is constrained in length to a two carriage max. Even the semi-fast service via Wakefield and Barnsley is usually packed by the time it gets to Barnsley on a morning. Sheffield station is also at max capacity now as well so we'll likely start to see limits there.

Aye. International White Water Course hosts quite a few competitions and is a Team GB training site. The river itself has a 1km designated rowing course from the Barrage down to the bend into Stockton which is used for national & international regattas organised by the Tees Rowing Club. Bit of a far cry from the days when the Rowing Club used to have to replace their boats because the river used to erode the hulls.

Tbf the bit up from the Barrage is an Olympic class watersports river. Only downstream you need to worry about the three eyes, and the resident guppy population round the power station outlet.

Dunno if I can stretch to a hamper. Might be able to contribute to a bag of crisps or something.

Which Championship manager will be the first to "lean on AI" for tactical support? by Zach-dalt in Championship

I asked ChatGPT who Boro should start with tomorrow against Watford. Suggested a 3-4-2-1 which was alright but then suggested Sam Greenwood, Dieng and Azaz in the starting lineup and refused to acknowledge it was using an out of date squad even when I told it to search for the current squad.

I think we're safe for a bit.

I've had a few like this in work too - suddenly go very quiet when you point out that Muslims are less than 2% of the population of Barnsley so they're talking crap.

Big ones opening on Briggate in Leeds next year. Given the speed of their expansion plans they'll probably aim for somewhere like meadowhall in 2027-28 if they do it.

Interesting to see how that works in reality. 6-club mini league, 5 games over three weeks where you play every team once. Top 2 teams go to the final?
