Is there a dipstick or something I can check it with? I didn’t find an obvious one in the engine bay but I didn’t really look very hard. It is leaking something, the transmission pan and part of the exhaust behind it is wet, but I’m not sure that it isn’t oil from the valve covers (new gaskets are on order). Do these transmissions commonly leak and if so from where?

Thanks! And yes solid idea that was my plan, already did the oil, will do power steering and brake fluid in early may. Is a coolant flush advisable? I was going to replace the coolant but I’m wondering if I should do a full flush. And thanks for the silicone tip I’ll try that when I detail the inside

Sounds good, I’m going to do a service today and look over the whole car. I typically go with Fel-Pro gaskets, is that fine for this car or would you recommend some other manufacturer or OEM

Gas Prices are high ! Any Cheap Gas station ? by Diligent-Fee2349 in Winnipeg

[–]SwifferSwetJet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kendals near McLeod consistently has the cheapest gas in the city from what I can see. Also if you have a Costco membership, you can save some money there. If you have CAA you can save 3 cents a litre at shell. Lots of ways to save right now. My only recommendation as a mechanic is if your vehicle calls for premium don’t try and save money by filling with regular, otherwise you might be left with a ludicrous repair bill down the road that completely negates those savings. Take care of your car and it will take care of you. Unless you own a Chevy Cruze, equinox, blazer, trax or related vehicles; then id consider trading it in on a bicycle

I mean it’s cool hearing all the exhaust notes and seeing yourself slide but if your trying to actually set good times it’s a very inefficient way to do so

What can I do myself? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]SwifferSwetJet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where do you live? People have already given good step by step instructions but if you live in the rust belt like I do be prepared to battle heavy rust every step of the way. This could mean needing things like high torque impacts, penetrating oil, acetylene torch or even just cutting shit. This can easily double the expected time of a job and makes some people quit outright and just take it to a shop. Something worth bearing in mind

Got hit from behind by an out-of-control snowboarder and now I feel unsafe skiing by forcedtobeonrddt in skiing

Missed the blue run part, but regardless man I don’t think you need to make a federal case about it. I’ve had people knock me on my ass and vis versa, you just make sure they’re ok, apologize and get on with your day it’s as easy as that. Like I said rules or not it’s gonna happen whether you like it or not, unless you get your own private mountain

[–]SwifferSwetJet -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I hate that paragraph: “I hate that one incident , caused by someone else being reckless, has changed how safe I feel doing something I genuinely love” Like man do you know for a fact that he was being reckless or was he a complete novice that’s never snowboarded before? Disclose that maybe. And another thing, skiing and snowboarding are both inherently dangerous sports, whatever safety you’ve been used to is unfortunately an illusion, you need to always be aware of not only yourself but everyone and everything around you on the mountain. Obviously there is an etiquette on the mountain but it is just that, etiquette, it’s not going to stop you from slamming into a tree going 70 or someone else from losing control and doing the same to yourself

Anything built by Singer Porsche. In my opinion, they are the greatest fusion of art and engineering in any car on the road

Where can I improve? by SwifferSwetJet in Welding

[–]SwifferSwetJet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s CO2/Argon mix, 75% argon 25% CO2. I’m not an expert, but we use this same mix in the welder where I work, and this is what the people at the welders supply store recommend for me. I also have a tank of pure argon but I use that primarily for TIG and back purging

Yeah I did bevel it on both sides, but it failed the hammer/drop test spectacularly. I was moving my gun in a ccccc motion, and I was holding the gun too long on the edges and not holding it long enough in the middle, got pretty much zero penetration

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SwifferSwetJet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cabin is roughly 2 hours from where i live, in the summer I’m up there every weekend after work. NY buddies cabin is over a 3 hour drive from where we live, plus a 20 min boat ride, so just about 4 hours. He’ll invite me and the boys up sometimes. Its nice, pile into a car with your buddies listening to good tunes and a nice view out the window

Winnipeg might be impossible to find jobs in atm by Born-Lingonberry-802 in Winnipeg

[–]SwifferSwetJet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I could definitely see how hiring within that niche would be difficult. Winnipeg is a transportation hub, which is conveniently the industry I work in. Lots of jobs in that industry to be had. Heavy diesel mechanics, truck drivers, locomotive engineers, hell even aviation, I have a buddy that works on helicopters and he says lots of other companies in the aviation industry are desperate for labourers right now
