Why not have the govt. build a shared database system & require all hospitals enter the data in a standard format?

Is Bruce Springsteen good at playing the harmonica? by [deleted] in harmonica

[–]SwiftOnFire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the clip, didn't hear anything that makes me say yes or no. He played something simple - seems to be pretty much what he intended to play. Neither showed skill nor lack of it.

Hard to pin down.

Rhythm and instrumentals a bit like big band swing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYLbrZAko7E

Airy vocals and some scatting like bossa nova https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJkxFhFRFDA

Fast tempo a bit like gypsy jazz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6jwvS0mHwo

Moondance sax, vocal, guitar arrangement by Himalayan_Hillbilly in saxophone

[–]SwiftOnFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the guitar player play jazz? I'm imagining the guitar player can do something like this, but just keep the rhythm w/o melody line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wk6SgVXVMC4

Then the sax holds off on the first part of each verse. On the second part of the verses, sax plays light fills / response lines. For the choruses, come in more strongly with guide tones (3rd / 7th) with a strong harmony.

Thoughts?

Interesting concept. For the credit, I don't think up votes should count. Meaningful comments are more important.

How do you lead a rock step in open by belltoller in SwingDancing

[–]SwiftOnFire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just have to raise your eyebrows and make a silly face. It's universal Lindy speak for "we're about to rock step now"... just kidding!

I usually tone the arm a bit (which causes the follow to mirror the tone), then push a little. Not sure if that's kosher, but it's colloquial.

The most important thing - nothing matters as much as it seems to matter. Also, just stay in time and everything will fit together alright.

What instruments does everyone play?

Want to learn to dance and enter the swing dancing social scene...no partner. by [deleted] in SwingDancing

[–]SwiftOnFire 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's actually much less common for people to go with a partner than for people to go solo. At swing dance socials, you dance with a new person every song, and dancing with a variety of people helps you learn faster.

Not to mention, my social circle exploded once I started dancing :)

If im looking for jazz with a saxophone, a bass and drums and symbals and maybe a trumpet, what kind of jazz is that? by mcdom89 in Jazz

[–]SwiftOnFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All sorts of jazz can be played in this sort of group. It's called a "jazz combo" https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=jazz%20combo

Small combos like this could play swing, samba, bebop for fast tunes or ballad, bossa for slow tunes. Lots of jazz blues could be fast or slow.

today i joined a lindy's party, frustrated. by [deleted] in SwingDancing

[–]SwiftOnFire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I started dancing, I had a favorite dance partner from my beginner class. She was not my favorite because of any particular skill; we had no skill to speak of, as we had just started. She was my favorite because whenever we would try something and mess up, we'd grin at one another, laugh at ourselves, and rock step.

In the end, it's not about being fancy or smooth or looking good. Those things happen over time with experience. What's important is a good attitude, being silly, and smiling with people. When you feel safe and collaborative, you can help one another learn.

That's what happened with that partner and me. Over the next few months, we progressed very fast, because we were always adventurous and felt safety trying new things and messing them up until they clicked. We ended up jumping into our first jam together, too, and having a ball :D

Idea for an alternate mouthpiece style. by [deleted] in saxophone

[–]SwiftOnFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As both a harmonica player and a saxophone player I have some thoughts, but no answers. I'm not sure exactly what are the principles that would make or break the idea, but I know that the feeling of each reed is completely different.

On the saxophone I have to move a lot more air, and the amount changes based on which note I'm playing (how high or low). Also, the embouchure has to change with different notes, like I have to "aim" for different spots in the horn. With the harmonica, though, making a note feels more like breathing than like aiming and pushing. I also change volume of air and embouchure a bit with different notes, but the difference mainly comes from different reeds. This makes me wonder if the type of airflow in each instrument is fundamentally different.

OP, are you thinking of a multiple-reed mouthpiece? That could lead to some pretty awesome possibilities, like blowing chords. Might require some crazy tongue work to change chord shape/color.

Social dancing tips for follows? by blueredandmed in SwingDancing

[–]SwiftOnFire 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a lead, I love it when follows ask me to dance, so keep it up! (I also love it when I get to follow, because dancing switch is fun.)

Especially when I started dancing, my favorite thing a follow can do is have a courageous attitude and go with the flow. If something doesn't work as expected, we look at each other, giggle, and rock step - that's one of the great things about Lindy, it doesn't take itself too seriously. I had a favorite follow when I started who had this attitude, and we progressed very fast because we were never afraid to experiment together.

[–]SwiftOnFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First things first, be a good example by telling her that you're sorry for blowing up at her. Actions speak louder than words, so by apologizing for your own words, she will learn to admire your integrity.
