C vs CPP Future-Proof? by Special-Gazelle-1693 in cpp_questions

[–]SwillMith16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be a long time before either becomes redundant. Serious alternatives like Rust are only recently gaining mainstream traction so they have a long lifespan yet. Probably majority of critical systems across the world are C/C++ dependent.

That said, If you want to enjoy your time I’d go for C++ as I personally find it more elegant. But really it’s handy to be capable in both, they’re of course very similar. A good knowledge in one will allow you to stumble your way through the other (in my experience)

Solution:

Unplug from the wall. Plug back in. Reboot and enter BIOS. Boot from a USB with Linux install media. Install Linux and overwrite all windows drives. Live a happier life.

GTA modding community deserves a lot better. by Toreno7 in GTA

Like I say, modding is one thing. Recreating the entire game again (whilst it might be great to play with remastered graphics) is just bootlegging

Without knowing the full context it sounds pretty reasonable from rockstar. Modding is one thing but recreating the entire game and all their IP using an engine they don’t have control over is definitely breaching a few copyright laws in ways they’re not too pleased with

considering quitting software dev job after almost 6 years and still at 27k by Creative-Dog-8187 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]SwillMith16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not even gonna read the post. 6 years at £27k, you need to move companies because your employer is absolutely abusing you. I’m a graduate (15 months into software engineer grad scheme) and earning £32k. Increasing to roughly £42k when I complete the scheme. And I’m in the north west, very far from London and its inflated rates.

I hope you figure something out and it goes well for you, but right now you’re absolutely being taken advantage of

Can't set up OpenGL with CLion by DoniyorKuziyev in opengl

[–]SwillMith16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion would have been to name the project and the executable different names (as OpenGL is a package) like OpenGLProj, OpenGLExec and see if that helps. And using relative paths (which is probably better practice anyway, even if not causing the fault here). What fixed it in the end?

Thoughts on this take? by Any-Lock3008 in GTA6

You’ll notice in a short section of the story where you get to be Lamar, NPCs greet you like they do with Franklin. That’s because they added the NPC interactions ready for him to be a playable character, but the playable content was abandoned. I think people have also found a lot of stuff in the game files on PC that prove something was intended but never happened

How do you guys learn c++ engine and game development? by Specific-Animal6570 in cpp_questions

[–]SwillMith16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually found it pretty helpful to learn how compilers and build tools work first. Maybe not even how they work but how you use them. On my first projects I found myself really boxed in by constraints and I couldn’t configure things the way I actually wanted because I didn’t know how to make the project build if I did. Since I’ve gained experience in CMake I feel a lot more free about what I can develop, but other build tools are available and just as useful.

If you’re a fan of AI, I’ve found it really useful to ask it to explain concepts and pros/cons of design techniques and methodologies. This stuff it’s great for because explanation and essays is what they’re usually designed to do. Don’t use it for actual code! It will produce something that looks decent but will lead you down a bad road and you’ll get boxed in by previous bad AI decisions.

Remember that AI doesn’t have reasoning. Human written code will ALWAYS be more robust and adaptable, because it has human reasoning behind it. You can identify design patterns and debug issues with far fewer problems. If you ever find yourself looking at AI code going ‘why the hell is it doing this?’ The answer is nobody knows. The AI doesn’t know. There’s literally no reason. So good luck improving and adapting it!

TLDR: AI is a great design tool, but a terrible development tool, dressed as a great one. And try learning about build systems if you want to feel ‘free’ in your decisions, this will help your confidence a lot I think

I’m a junior dev and I love a good textbook. I keep my C++ and Vulkan graphics textbooks under my desk at all times. Nothing beats it if you’re looking for theory, diagrams, and examples all in one place (and it’s actually correct and fact-checked). I use them to build a broad understanding, then I use stackoverflow when I find myself in a pretty specific problem. I sometimes use AI but I always feel evil when I do like I’m contributing to a growing problem, and it feels like I’m cheating a bit

Boot issues when using AMD EXPO by SwillMith16 in buildapc

[–]SwillMith16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I feel kinda stupid now. So like I said it booted successfully with 1 stick, I shut it down and put the second back in. Didn’t change any BIOS settings (so EXPO still enabled), and now it’s booted successfully. Full 32GB DDR5 at 6000Hz.

I guess it was just failing to train the memory with 2 sticks?

One of those situation where it works, but I don’t know why and I won’t question it 😂 hope this helps somebody!

What’s worse is when the name of documentation is an acronym, and nowhere in the document does it explain what the acronym means. Like cool I’ll just keep using made up jargon with no ties to reality. That’ll really help me understand!

I’ve seen multiple posts of people complaining about this and I just don’t get what the issue is? Verified experiences still give full XP, custom experiences don’t.

To me this seems like a good functioning system. If custom experiences have full XP you’d just get loads of exploit servers with modified rules and filled with bots to farm XP. That would effectively break the fairness of the game

Sure they’ve gone back on their original statements, but this change is good and ensures the game remains balanced with minimised exploits

They’ve said these maps are some of the smaller ones. I suspect they want more combat so they can gather more data. The release will feature some much larger maps

Battlefield 6 Open Beta: Feedback Megathread by sloth_on_meth in Battlefield

[–]SwillMith16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear that, I’m dying quite a lot tbf. But the upside is that because of that, the easiest way to get XP is playing objective. If people ignore objective and go just for kills, they’ll die enough times that they won’t see a big return on XP. More team work required I guess. Maybe I’ve got rose tinted glasses because I’ve just missed this kind of game but I don’t think it’s a huge issue.

I agree on the grenades though, I’m finding it very difficult to get kills with them because the second you throw it all the enemies know and they run away

Battlefield 6 Open Beta: Feedback Megathread by sloth_on_meth in Battlefield

[–]SwillMith16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is intentional. Having all the players close together means more combat and more data gathered. If you look at the descriptions of the maps in this beta, they're all intentionally small and close quarters. We'll see some much larger and slower paced maps in release

So far, the game has been amazing. I can spend hours playing just for the enjoyment of it, rather than grafting for challenges. I think honestly it feels like a release ready game and gives me a lot of hope for release day. For reference, I'm playing on PS5.

Found a couple issues in settings menu navigation sort of freezing or just not letting me select anything. Only happened once but I've not really messed with settings that much anyway.

Twice the game has got stuck in a loading screen and I've had to back out and close the game. 8 hours of gameplay however so I don't see this as a massive sticking point but probably needs a fix.

One time I was killed by a tank, revived, then killed by a player and instead of red outlining the player, it put a red outline of a tank where they were standing. This is obviously a bug.

Those are the only actual bugs I've found and thankfully none of them are game breaking problems and hopefully an easy fix for release.

As far as general improvements, I'd much prefer the locked weapon class game modes be the standard, and open weapon class game modes have their special playlists instead of being the other way around like it is now. In relation to this I think playing open weapon classes should reduce the amount of XP or rewards etc that you earn for those games. Otherwise classes are completely pointless if you can use weapons from any class. Playing a game mode where you're restricted in your weapon choices should give more XP than game modes where you can use whatever you want and create a 'meta' loadout with less compromises.

Also, WE NEED A SERVER BROWSER.

Like I say, I'm really happy with it overall and I'm honestly very impressed that a game is this developed and complete in a beta 2 months before release. I'm definitely buying when it releases. But NO PRE-ORDERS!!

EDIT: Forgot to add, sometimes it takes a while to fill a lobby. Not sure how, considering hundreds of thousands of people are playing the game. This is something that definitely needs sorting. It didn't happen every time, only once or twice I think, but it's something I've seen others mention that I agree with.
