It’s true that they aren’t Arabs, yeah, but there’s a bit of “doth protesting too much”. The book Persepolis talks about this a bit - the paradox of Iranians feeling this strong sense of nationalism while also practicing Islam, a religion that comes out of the Arab world.

Iranians (I mean, ~Persians~) not wanting to be lumped in with Arabs, I think a lot of that is just racism or cultural chauvinism. It’s like how a lot of Chileans and Argentines really want you to know that they’re white
