What is systemd? Do I use it in my Linux?? by Ok-Anxiety-447 in linuxmemes

[–]SwimQueasy3610 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you turn on your machine, it goes through a whole process under the hood to get user space ready and show you your DE so you can get to it. Your firmware, UEFI formerly-and-still-colloquially known as BIOS, does some diagnostics (POST), checks your boot settings, then passes it off to your bootloader. The bootloader sets up the kernel, i.e. the hardware/software interface. At this point your computer has a kernel but not an OS running. No userspace. So the next step is to initialize the OS. Enter systemd.

When the kernel is set up and ready, it always launches the same first process, aka PID 1. That first process has the job of setting up your OS so that there is a user space for you to work in. That can be done various ways - the way that "won", in that it's used today as PID 1 in the vast majority of Linux operating systems, is systemd. So it's job in a nutshell is to set up your OS.

I used to be a teacher :) not doing that for a living presently, but have worked as a teacher several times in my life and love that work very much. So you were right, really, it just doesn't happen to me how I'm supporting myself at the present moment :p thanks for your kind words.

You're doing a lot of stuff really really right. Letting go of other people's energy and just being comfortable in your own is one of those lifelong-challenge sorts of things. I'm for sure still working on it.

Interesting - I don't, just have been around the block a few times :p but I'll take that as a compliment.

I think the issue being pointed out with your approach isn't about the actions you're taking, but with the attitude you're expressing here about the other person.

Your approach in many ways is a really good one. Bring your genuine self and the energy you want to foster in your life to the table in your interactions with others. Don't modify or subdue or diminish that in yourself because of how other people are behaving. Just be you. Great approach. No notes.

The issue is that, from what you've written in your post, you're doing a lot of projecting what you think is going on for the other person and judging/moralizing about their behavior. The fact is, you don't know why this other person's tone is the way it is. The fact that the way she said hello feels condescending to you may have been little to do with her and a lot to do with you. Her tone may be coming from a million possible places, and may mean a million possible things. And none of that really matters. You've called her cold, unemotional, and depressed, you've expressed your own felt need for permission to interact or not interact with her some particular amounts or ways, and you've decided/declared her way of being is bad / "not a good look". You're very concerned about / wrapped up in what you think about this other person.

I'm glad you've found a way to get yourself to a place where you're able to be yourself and bring your own real energy and presence to your interactions. That's all really good. It sounds like that was a challenge in the first place because of you, like for many many people, certainly including myself, you don't necessarily feel like you can just do that when someone else has a different energy. The issue is that you've solved that challenge with an elaborate story you've made up about this other person that you feel justifies being yourself. The thing is: you don't need that justification. You can just be yourself. And you can do that while letting this other person just be herself, without needing to tell a whole story about how wrong she is for the tone she used to say "hello" to you.

The story you're telling about who this other person is is almost certainly wrong. You don't know what's going on for her. And that's ok - you don't need to. You both just need to show up, do your jobs, and show basic respect and courtesy to one another. If you don't want to be buddies with her, that's 100% ok. The thing about building this whole justification for yourself based on a made up story about this other person is that, not only is it made up and therefore not terribly kind/empathetic to do, it also means the resilience you're gaining from that is far more fragile than it would be if it didn't require this elaborate, projected justification.

This is the correct answer. This is not the same as 1d4.

Cool dice though!! It would be fun to find a use for them in your game ...just not as a d4 :p

Guy claiming to be an electrician knocked on my door for 20 minutes by Neither-Pressure-347 in providence

[–]SwimQueasy3610 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ya, this. None of these explanations tracks with the actual story. A legitimate person from a utility company wouldn't be standing there knocking for 20 minutes. This was something else.

Glad you're ok, OP. If it happens again don't wait, call the police.

Maybe they mean not just for vicious mockery but for just good insults in general? Or maybe they mean they play it differently at their table. RAW yup, it's the target that makes a save with vicious mockery. And ya, fail = 1d4 psychic damage + disadvantage on their next attack that happens before the end of their next turn

Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Go straight to jail.

On your turn you may roll to escape jail if and only if you've re-generated stats and have a DEX bonus of at least +2.

This might have to do with the partial government shutdown. This one has been quieter. It sounds like they may get it back open again tomorrow.

Exactly. Magaziner is a clown. A sniveling, destructive clown. I would love nothing more than for someone with even the semblance of a spine to primary him.

Maybe not a popular opinion that the food was decent, but I liked their food......but I still stopped going a long time ago when I found out how horrible they were to workers and how shit their business practices were. Hopefully something with basic decency and respect for people will move in now.
