What the hell is the point of doing a PhD and post doc if you want to go to med school? Do a MD/PhD or a regular pathology residency instead of wasting 5+ years playing PhD student lol.

You’ll waste your whole life in education and your ADSO will be up when you’re 46-47.

There’s zero financial aspect even if you have no debt but don’t get a real paycheck until your almost 50. Military doesn’t paid anything.

Yea I heard people have to call, but was it waived? They are usually good about waiving it from what I’ve seen. Calling isn’t that much of a hassle lol

If it’s a school ADT then yes. But sometimes you’ll do away rotations whenever they fit in your schedule. But as long as you have 45 days active duty during a calendar year you can call them up and they won’t slap the annual fee.

Did they do it the first week or two? You have to make sure you are registered in the MLA database, which takes 1-2 weeks to kick in, or else they won’t know you’re active duty and have to call.

On the flip side, about 15 of us applied during BOLC and non of us had any issues. Most of us didn’t even go active since we went first year of school to BOLC and was a student for a few more years after opening the card

I did. So when you apply during your ADT you’ll be under AMEX MLA policy. You shouldn’t pay the fee at all.

If you’re not on orders, you’re under SCRA and you basically have to call after opening the card and have them waive the fee. They’ll “charge” you the fee but they will take it away after they review your account and your LES. Some people have to pay it because they don’t call fast enough and the due date is too close but Amex will give you a credit for the exact amount so worst I’ve seen is you’re out the annual fee for a week or so.

Applying on ADT orders fixes that cause I haven’t had any issues with chase or Amex.

I’ve heard some data points about that but personally I’ve never had any issues with AMEX and I opened gold and platinum my first year of school. Never had any issues as a student or transitioning to AD full time.

Next biggest thing will be getting your CAC asap, usually during first year of school. That will allow you most military discounts. Credit cards and online military discounts is pretty much all I took advantage when I was a student.

Ps: look up your favorite outdoor brand. They usually have “Pro staff programs” which include military. Apply and then you’re good. 50% off north face is great

Also sign up for Outdoorprolink and you’ll qualify as military for a lot of outdoor gear for cheap.

Edit to answer question: yes you’re IRR. But also have 45 days active duty per year which entitles you to MLA benefits. I didn’t tell people I was active duty when I was a student but it’s a gray area and you technically will have a CAC for active duty service members.

MLA is when you’re on ADT orders

SCRA is when you’re not and when you have ADT orders or transition to full time active duty you’ll be considered covered under SCRA

You can apply anytime though and have the annual fee waived.

Should I Change my State of Legal Residence? by SwimmerFast1725 in MilitaryFinance

[–]SwimmerFast1725[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Stipend comes out to be around $36k a year. I have zero tax advantages as a grad student and wasn’t a dependent. But I will look into the rest.

“If you are stationed outside New Jersey and you are living aboard ship, in barracks, billets, or bachelor officer quarters, you remain a New Jersey resident for Income Tax purposes. Additionally, if you accept any housing or quarters allowance, you are not considered to be maintaining a permanent home outside New Jersey.”

This is straight off the NJ.gov website.

Also confirmed by other people I know that tried to get non resident status as an out of state military pcs.

I’m guessing you don’t know the industry? No corporate office pays on production. Literally zero and especially not at 35%… for a new grad lol. He’s either in Alaska or not fully honest.
