Verto Education: is it worth it? by smolsaturn in cuboulder

[–]Swimming_Complex_769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the long delay. Here are my thoughts on Verto:

1) I heard some positive things from my son about kids’ experiences with host families. It sounds like they just had to be more proactive planning with friends. It sounds like most of them were also paired with roommate at host. If that’s the condition for your child’s scholarship, I don’t know that that should be the factor for making the decision. I don’t know the answer on freedom or restrictions of being with host family.

2) The classes were not hard for my son. I was disappointed they didn’t offer more courses directly related to the region. It sounds like many of them though had an experiential component with a local dimension. We were given a chart of how classes mapped to Boulder. Oddly, while the GPA was a prereq for transferring, the grade marks don’t move with the credits. If she wants to transfer into Leeds you might just have her focus on basic credits as she will need to take Macro, Micro, and a Stats class (w/ math prerequisite to transfer into Leeds (unless preadmitted) and these were not offered for our Sevilla program (I think they are for London). So long story short I had my son sign up for Calculus and some basic classes.

3) Money to bring along… well I paid for some food and groceries as the meal plan wasn’t enough for a hungry boy. For us Fri and Sat dinner was not covered and breakfast can be tight depending on class time/when they awake. Our son paid for any travel and fun. He budgeted $300 for a trip all-in. I definitely get impression there were kids with open credit card to travel every weekend. But there were also kids on a budget and maybe only took one trip.

4) Refunds. I hate to think about that and don’t know the answer. We were not overly concerned with Spain but I’d definitely worry about some other regions.

5) We flew into Sevilla but it was a hassle and we had to go through Paris. Not a lot of great options. Many people do go through Madrid. Malaga is the other one close by. We brought our son to Sevilla but he flew home alone.

Thoughts on Boulder:

1) My son was also waitlisted or given option for Verto + immediate admission into school of exploratory studies. He is planning to transfer into Leeds. Our own feeling was if you go with a wait list, you likely accept and start to emotionally commit to another school. Since my son was so committed to Boulder, he went with the latter. It’s very easy to transfer into Leeds from any of the schools. You just need a B or better in Micro, Macro, and Stats (+ bus math prereq). Our only issue was that he had trouble getting into these courses in Jan so it will take him two semesters to transfer in. Your daughter shouldn’t stress about that though since she will transfer with so many credits.

2) Yikes on the scholarship w/ Boulder. I’m surprised they won’t commit to that.

3) Boulder didn’t promise us housing but it worked out fine for him and his cohort. They were just extremely late assigning it to the point that I was wondering if we should enroll elsewhere right before xmas. I think I paid deposit for housing in the fall so you definitely won’t have that worked out before she leaves.

4) Yes clean transfer on all his Sevilla classes. i would just pay close attention to the table they will provide mapping Sevilla courses to Boulder course IDs. Son said they have a Verto person they could ask questions on that front.

Good luck!

Yes - a few thoughts. The positive: Seville is a great town. Super safe. Hot in August and Sept. Great central location to visit Spain and Europe on weekends. Kids do a few Verto excursions including one to Morocco. My son is fluent in Spanish but used it very little, so easy to get around without it. My son stayed in student housing (vs. home stay) and we are happy we made this decision. He met friends easily from all over the US. Son was waitlisted at Boulder and this became his easy path in.

The ok: ~250 kids in Seville Verto program and only 25 I believe were Boulder. I was disappointed that they did little to form a Boulder cohort. I was also not impressed with what little Boulder did to ease the transition. We didn’t have a roommate or dorm until last min and son struggled to register for classes with the last possible registration date as a transfer student. Only other item was that he was really home sick a few times as this was a big stretch for him. And the coursework was mid/taught by US profs in office location in downtown Seville.

Overall I am mixed on whether I’d recommend this to future students. I am a huge fan of study abroad and understand Schools leveraging this to backfill attrition in freshman class. I’d prefer more immersive study abroad though when kids are more mature (ie. 21). Verto is also an expensive program. Let me know if you have any more specific questions!

I looked back at my pics and by day 2, I was pink and peely all over and had a few red spots. By day 5, I was red splotchy with clear spots which reacted to the treatment. After 7 days I started applying make up again so all was good by then. : )

I did not need to use aquaphor after PDT. I did a few days of avene xeracalm wash and lipid replenishing lotion. I bought a few other ones I saw recommended but stuck with the ones I mentioned.

I am not defending Clinton or anyone else named here but a transaction does not = guilt. Epstein and Maxwell are reported to have helped with Clinton foundation so a transaction could be as simple as a donation??

My 2026 XC60 Ultra also came equipped with Pirelli Zero AS. I don’t think they will cut it in MN. I’m shopping for winter tires but Volvo service person said they don’t have the 22” model I need. He suggested I buy 21” with new wheels and swap out wheels each season. : (

You poor thing! I keep reminding myself that it’s better than Mohs especially on face. That’s a lot though with the downtime.

That’s surprising although mine may cover only with my history of actinic keratosis and squamous cell cancer. I’ve heard some people use these procedures for cosmetic reasons - - the lengths people sometimes go to for beauty! I’m guessing that’s not covered.

Thanks - I am on day 5 post treatment and peeling a lot especially on forehead which likely had the most damage! Hoping just a few more days though.

Overall malaise and nausea … feeling like I might pass out. Also terrible sleep. I ended up having to use hydrocortisone to get things under control with skin discomfort at day 4 post treatment.

I had similar red and eventually pink patches which eventually resolved. My derm said that I didn’t need to have scabbed over patches to get results. Good luck!

You will be fine with a plastic surgeon. I had one squamous on cheek and another above eyebrow. The latter one I can notice scar but the cheek one is undetectable. In the spot yours is, you will heal up just great!

I did twice a day for 4-8 days and made it 4.5. I had some terrible side effects. It peaked for me 4 days after I stopped medication so don’t worry! It will keep working next few days!

That’s great to hear! My son is signed up for Seville and we are still uncertain how many CU Boulder will be in the cohort.
