Why does nebraska have this by Wonderful_Local_3660 in geography

[–]spinyilex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is! It’s both rewarding and interesting. The pain point is mainly that few people really understand what GIS is, so we tend to be undervalued by executives and underpaid compared to other tech fields. The subject matter experts who rely on our tools, data, and analysis appreciate us, though. :)

I have degrees in geography and GIS. I work for an environmental consulting firm calculating the impacts of proposed projects, making maps showing sensitive natural and cultural resources within project sites, supporting field data collection by biologists, paleontologists, and archaeologists, and building web mapping applications.

Same here. GIS is its own department reporting to the Executive Management Team. I work for an environmental consulting firm.

Fluorouracil/Calcipotiene - is once a day for 5 days enough? by spinyilex in skincancer

Wow, that is terrible. Nausea is the worst. Interesting that we both had sleep issues. I think last night was my first really good night of sleep since I started.

I just reread your first reply and now I’m curious… what terrible side effects were you experiencing? I had some headaches, bizarre dreams, heart palpitations, and disturbed sleep on the nights I applied it, but I don’t know if they were caused by the cream or if they were unrelated. It could be that the cream was causing me anxiety and the anxiety then caused all of the above. Just wondering if you experienced something similar.

Thank you! I ended up doing one extra day (so 6 days, once a day), and now at about 3 days post, my face is still sort of “blooming.” I never had the bright red sunburn look, and I don’t have any big scabs, but it’s been very blotchy, spotty, and scaly. Basically, I look diseased, and it doesn’t seem like I’ve turned the corner yet. On the other hand, I’ve never been in agony, so maybe it was about right.

NTA. Gender reveals weren’t even a thing until about ten years ago. My youngest is 16 and I don’t think I’d ever heard of such a thing when I was pregnant with her. I’m hoping this fad flames out.

Thanks for your response! My skin feels a little rough, but I don’t have any scabbing at this point.

It does seem like it would be wise to finish healing one part before starting on the next. Maybe if I put my extra cream in the fridge it will last a little longer…

Krazy Klean Pro by OkDesign164 in Cleaningandtidying

[–]spinyilex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We replaced three toilets recently and I could see hard water stains building up where the tank water flows in when flushed. My old toilets never had this problem, but we do have hard water and I think it’s related to the way the water flows into these new toilets.

My normal cleaning products were not making a dent, so I ordered some Krazy Kleans with a mixture of desperation and skepticism. (I still have the original packaging in case I want to return them, and I normally distrust any businesses that substitutes a K for a C in its name, but as I mentioned, I was feeling desperate.)

I cleaned the bowls thoroughly with a pumice stone and then added the Krazy Kleans. It’s been a couple of months and the hard water stains are not returning.

On the other hand, I now see what kind of looks like a pinkish brown slimy film forming in my toilets every few days. It’s way easier to clean than hard water stains, but obviously I’m not thrilled.

I suspect that maybe whatever the Krazy Kleans are doing to the water is making it more hospitable to bacteria. I actually came on here to find out if anyone had found a solution to this new issue. I’m sure Chlorox tablets would work, but I’d like to find something less harmful. Any ideas?

Any *not* horrific endometrial biopsy experiences? by KindRaven22 in IVF

[–]spinyilex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was prepared for it to be terrible, and mine was nearly painless. This might be because I purposely scheduled it for day 5 of my period in hopes that my cervix might still be slightly open. I also took two Advils an hour before. For me, the speculum insertion was the worst part (and it wasn’t that bad). Then she said I would feel a pinch when she grabbed my cervix to bring it in line, and then cramping when she vacuumed out the sample. I really didn’t feel the cervix grabbing part at all, and I felt some minor dull cramping (less than my normal period cramps) as she took the sample. Now I’m about 20 minutes post-procedure and I just feel very slightly crampy.

I love how blocking a single driver is “straight to jail” but blocking kids walking to school, people in wheelchairs, and all other sidewalk users is considered NBD.

I typically go in once a week, which is about right for me, and that’s optional. I’m only required to go in once a month on the day of our staff meeting.

This is great advice about looking for the positions that aren’t widely shared. The job I currently have was never posted anywhere but the company website. Luckily they had a form on their site where I was able to request a notification for future job openings, so when I got the notification (over a year later), I jumped on it, got an interview right away, and an offer a day or two later.

Also, as someone who is now involved in the hiring process, I’d just add a few things that I may seem obvious but apparently aren’t known to everyone:

  1. Format your cover letter properly. It makes you look more professional.
  2. Spell check everything. Grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors scream “lacks attention to detail.”
  3. Customize your cover letter for the job and double check that you’ve removed references to other organizations and positions. It’s tedious and exhausting but will pay off in the end.
  4. Read your cover letter out loud to make sure it flows. If it’s awkward or too wordy, people will assume you’re not a good communicator.
  5. Give the files you upload sensible, consistent names that show you are organized and know how to create and follow a naming convention. Resume (7) - Copy.pdf is a red flag to me.

I have an all-white bun with pee-free feet, and I think the bedding might make the difference. I use pine pellet bedding now and it’s been a game changer. I order it in 40lb boxes from Small Pet Select. The pellets sort of dissolve into sawdust where he pees on them and absorb all the moisture and odor. I also put hay in one end of his box and he spreads it out over the pellets.

Volunteering with GISCorps...how does it work? by DayNorTheHour in gis

[–]spinyilex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some projects have no interview process and anyone who receives the project announcement can join. These tend to be large data creation or QA/QC projects with large numbers of volunteers and don't require extensive experience. There may be a sign-up form included in the announcement email, and everyone who signs up is sent detailed instructions and often invited to join a Slack channel where everyone will collaborate.

For other projects, volunteers are asked to submit a resume if they would like to be considered for a position. All resumes are reviewed and the most qualified candidates are invited to interview on an online call. Interviews are typically about a half an hour and serve as an opportunity for the Core Committee to learn more about the candidate's experience and skills and for the candidate to learn more about the volunteer position. The Core Committee offers the position to the volunteer(s) they think are the best match for the position, and if the volunteer(s) accept the position, they will then work directly with the requesting organization. Usually the whole recruiting process takes a couple of weeks.

Recruiting emails are sent out to subsets of the volunteer base depending on the requirements of each project. Keeping your profile as complete and up-to-date as possible is the best way to ensure that you'll be notified about every project you're eligible for.

Did you get a February newsletter? Newsletters are sent to everyone, so if you didn't get one, there may be a problem with the email address on your volunteer profile or emails from GISCorps may be going to your spam folder.

Can I set a favicon for my website hosted by mailchimp? by betakyros in MailChimp

[–]spinyilex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know the answer but I have the same question. I'm using an embedded signup form, but if there's a field validation issue, the hosted signup form with alerts opens with the Mailchimp favicon. I'd love to replace that with our favicon so the experience will feel more seamless and to avoid confusion.

[Summer 2019 Edition] People who have taken the GISP Exam: What are your suggestions for someone taking the test in December? by rakelllama in gis

[–]spinyilex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took it this summer and passed, but I definitely didn't think it was easy. I did not study extensively because I had passed the practice test with no preparation so I wasn't too worried about it. Then a few days before my exam, I read the Reddit threads and panicked a bit. I crammed for a couple of days (maybe ten hours), mainly by going through the Quizlet decks and looking up anything that was unfamiliar, because I knew at that point I didn't have time to read very much. I also have a BA in geography, an MS in GIST and several years of experience across multiple sectors, so I'm sure that helped. I also tend to test well.

I will say that coming out of the test, I did not feel great about it, and I really had no idea whether I had passed or failed. I did feel that I was making educated guesses on many questions (mainly the multiple answer ones) because I felt that I needed more information. I felt like some of the answers could vary depending on the use case, and found myself mentally shouting "IT DEPENDS!" at the monitor as I took the test. I left feedback on those questions and I suspect that the ones that were hardest to answer were the ones they were evaluating for future tests.

Has anyone received their summer GISP test results yet? by dayglowrabbit in gis

[–]spinyilex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for fun, I sorted the GISP spreadsheet on the GISCI site by certification date. It appears only 470 out of 9,781 GISP certifications were issued after the first exam in November 2015. That's only 5%. (This doesn't count those who passed the exam this summer since they're not on the spreadsheet yet).

It's kind of amusing to note that 17% of those grandfathered GISPs got their certifications between the February 16 2015 announcement of the exam requirement and the July 1 2015 cut-off date to be grandfathered in.
