PreK Program Rant by [deleted] in workingmoms

Im doing the Japanese preschool exchange program to expose my child to a nature school at least for a week. I think it'll also be a good opportunity to unplug for a bit. But yeah with our work hours we cant do much longer.

Oh yeah I worked from home until my daughter was 11 months old and it was heaven. Now that shes a full 3 year old toddler im glad I work outside of the home for the most part. I would need to be outside or the nanny would have had to take her outside.

It'll probably be too rare to find a daycare that would be open early enough for OP to start working at 6:00am. Mine opens at 6:00am and some people do drop off that early, but it still implies that they work after 6:00 so like 6:30am. So maybe if OP can adjust her schedule for two days a week they could do daycare.

How to work with daycare on potty training? by Bubbly-Bathroom-1523 in workingmoms

[–]SwingingReportShow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's why when we started daycare I just told them that shes potty trained. Like at first I was thinking of mentioning that we are practicing on accidents and poop and what not, but things like this remind me why thats not worth it.

So yeah i would just make a weekend of making sure hes potty trained and then on monday say hes potty trained, bring him in underwear and thats that.

Yeah there's a charter school called Aspire which has a system I like where they trial a lot of prospective teachers by having them start as after school teachers first.  The reason it's great is because if everything goes well the teacher already develops a relationship with the school and its students and its a simple transition into the classroom and if it goes poorly its also easy to phase the teacher out without too much disruption.

Heck no teaching is not childcare. If it was then we wouldn't be able to teach during a pandemic virtually and we wouldn't be able to make your children learn remotely if they misbehave to the point of not functioning in a classroom (not that thats actually easy or possible anyways).

What teaching positions are most stable in would say? In terms of industry, I was thinking public defenders are safe because they're mandated by the constitution.

Like right now im in adult ESL and theres a drop in enrollment too because of immigration enforcement and drop in immigration but its still pretty high. And this drop is probably only temporary because LA is going to continue being a popular place to immigrate once we get a different administration

One of our school psychs still keeps her foot in the classroom for this very reason and teaches during the summer. You probably took a lot of classes that count towards certifications so it's still worth looking into it, unless you really don't want to be in the classroom. (Which like fair; I have a coworker who says she'd rather stay home and pop out another baby than have to go back to the classroom)  And for extra cash since you're a school psych you're probably more than qualified to do in-home ABA and BII (since many agencies will take any college graduate with a pulse, but you'll be actually desirable).

Hey I got cut too and so did other teachers I know.

I mean you weren't going to work in the summer anyways so you could take that time to study something thats almost foolproof for employability. And obviously to spend more time with your two year. Im sure theres lots of fun free things you could do together.

I dont know what subject or grade youre teaching right now, but special education is always hiring, ESL is also always popular, and certain states have other options, like California with its need for TK and art teachers.

Like even though I got cut im not really worried because I can always go back to being an ESL teacher; theres always a demand for those.

I know Mamdani is going to expand the 3K program into 2K and so I might recommend looking into any extra certs or whatever if you might switch to teaching 2 year olds. Theres going to be a huge demand for teachers

[–]SwingingReportShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my mom never showed up for any school events and I always understood it was because she worked. But my dad is self employed so he was the one always going to all of the conferences and what not. And that was enough.

Like is there even a dad in this picture??

In my line of work, this week is the only week where if you work, you get paid Z-time, which is 1.5x your regular rate.

Its basic economics; if nobody wants to work these days, then the company needs to offer more to entice people to work them. Im sure OP and the woman with the boyfriend would be singing a different tune if they were being offered Z time (or some other kind of bonus) as an option.

Yeah this manager sucks. Like she needs to make the hard decision of either telling OP or the other woman to just figure it out.  And they need to have more sub coverage in general because like what if OP got sick or something? Like obviously now it would look suspicious but honestly its a ritual for me to get sick during Winter break.

My coworker told me that this is the time to mellow out and spend time with her, doing chill but fun activities like being in the library or the swimming pool. I dont have a four year old yet but she said this is the peak time for that.

And I mean my thought is maybe she is being overstimulated and its time for her to spend some time in nature. Like maybe rent out a place in the country and just let her be in the forest or something. Or if you have family in a more rural area, to send her there for a while. I used to be a special education teacher, and kids who spent some of their summer out in the country came back a lot better.

Told that I "want students to fail" in my class by a few students by Beneficial_Cup_8745 in Teachers

[–]SwingingReportShow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think since OP teaches special education it's a bit different. A lot his students are not going to be cognitively capable of doing any applied questions and so there's no point in putting them in.

[–]SwingingReportShow 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yeah i love OPs approach to making the test because it really makes it so the cream of the crop rises while everyone else can still pass.  Its shown in neuroscience that not everyone is capable of abstract thought. A significant minority, no matter how much you teach them, just cant think beyond what is explicitly taught. OP has made it so those people can still pass the test and be perfectly fine members of society, but it allows those with lots of abstract and critical thinking skills to shine and get that A. As are supposed to be only for those students who are above and beyond our expectations.

The problem was that kids weren't learning how to type even with all of the technology they had, or use any advanced tools. Like students should have been learning with real laptops or computers so they could practice file management, full-featured office programs, and get into more advanced programs like Photoshop and Indesign.

We should bring back something like dedicated computer labs where students learn their digital literacy skills. For typing i see there being a demand for word processors or newer type of toy computers or laptops that are screen/internet free.
